If the father acknowledges her first son and brings him into the family that son qualifies to be inkosana. If the father is distant to that son than its a different matter. It's up to that son to fight for his right once his father has passed on. That is what Shaka did.

That said, they eventually separated leading Shaka to grow up in exile. Shaka challenged Sigujana because his mother, Nandi, being the daughter of a chief, was ranked higher, than MaNtuli, Sigujana's mother.
