I was a Framer for F-18s, at the "Rag" we had a whole flight (5 bird go full of students) come back in El Centro with cat 2 overstresses. I was "FDC" so I was walking to each recovering aircraft, noting what was broken on each one... 1,2,3,4 rolled in with no issues but a cat 2 overstress... #5 rolls in, with the instructor of the sortie... He hops out "Great jet Gents, have a good Friday"... I hit him with the standard "shooter" question " is there any issue with your 'G' override paddle?" He says, "Why the hell would that be an issue?" "Well sir, every other aircraft requires a cat 2 overstress inspection, I was wondering why you had the single exception"... His eyes got big, and he took a deep breath, he said "Y'all will have a couple cases of beer here shortly, I'll have a word or two on debrief"... We finished work Saturday morning, and the party that proceeded was something for the record books.

@@Taygon45I am not an aviator, so take my help with a grain of salt. It sounds like they were doing maneuvers and the students used the 'G override paddle' to go past the limitation the planes are set too. The instructor did not use it, so his plane did not get any stress from high G maneuvers. The Tech asked him if there was a problem with his paddle because the instructor's plane didn't have those stresses, I assume that the Tech assumed that they were supposed to be doing high G maneuvers and the instructor just wasn't able too. The work is probably hard/annoying/time consuming, or any combination of the three, so the instructor gave them beer to stay on their good side, and said he would talk to the students for, presumably, being utter morons.

Fun fact; The female controller communicating from the E-2 Hawkeye with the strike group is an actual Navy E-2 Instructor. Capt. Brian "Ferg" Ferguson, the technical advisor for the film, grabbed her to assist in correcting the dialog for these scenes and Kosinski, the director, decided to just film her doing it. One thing I loved about this movie was that they made the mission so clear in the training sequences. @@aaronlebeauf423 essentially Maverick exceeded the amount of G forces that Super Hornet is limited to by McDonnell Douglas/Boeing. And to put it bluntly, the maintenance squadron attached to that fighter wing is going to have to strip that aircraft down the the bare hull and inspect EVERY nut, bolt, structural member, wiring harness, exterior panel, both engines, and avionics for stress damage. (And a later scene reveals that the jet in question will NEVER fly again because of the extensive structural damage Maverick caused) As some of the actual Air Force and Navy Aviation maintainers have mentioned in their comments, this jet just went from Fully Mission Capable, to Hangar Queen in a few seconds.

@@digitalrailroader My question is, wasn’t that 10g move in that type of plane required for the plan? Aren’t all the pilots going to have to do the same thing in order to be successful? Or is it because Maverick chose to do it faster than the original 2:30 time as the reason he went that fast to caused him to reach 10g? I’m also not sure what the purpose was of Maverick shaving off 15 seconds from the original plan.
@SohiHien

@@anti-ethniccleansing465 that is because it's a movie and the movie doesn't care about what sort of G forces the planes can actually handle. In the real world they wouldn't be making pilots do that since it would damage the planes and is not good for the pilots either.

As a former sub guy I’ll have to plug an SSGN as the weapon of choice here….launch a 50 Tomahawk salvo and do the whole thing undetected, no need to even put an easily detectable surface ship in the area. The carrier group in TGM didn’t seem too concerned with their own survival, so the enemies naval arm doesn’t appear to strike fear, and the USN somehow caught the enemy off guard (Enemy motto: “It’s not suspicious at all that there’s a carrier battle group parked right over there, so we’re going to send our on-patrol aircraft somewhere else”)
@apparition13
@apparition13 Жыл бұрын
They didn't show the logical next scene, which is the Navy getting the hell out of dodge while defending against anti-ship missiles. Rather than celebrating on deck they should be shoving the Tomcat overboard to clear the deck since half the air wing would be on CAP anticipating a counterattack. But it's movie realism, so the heroes get their moment. As for Tomahawks, I mentioned it before but I think the attack requires sending a bomb straight down the shaft like a bowling ball in the gutter to get deep enough to take out the facility. I don't think a non-GPS guided Tomahawk could have that precise a flight profile. Of course if the bad guys had put a bend in the air shaft the plan wouldn't have worked at all. :D

Of course the airbase coordinates are point Nemo, which is a spot in the south Pacific that is the spot on Earth that is the farthest from land, so it can't actually be Iran either. And if there is land there, I think the little boy was wrong about Maverick being on Earth. *Into the Black Sea, then the Sea of Azov, up the Don, across the (too small) canals connecting to the Volga, down to the Caspian, across lots and lots of Russian territory, without being noticed. Then sneak out again. I take it back, the conifers are the most unrealistic part of the movie.

Though it doesn't happen often, infantry get to see demos in training of what happens when you try to close with AAA rapid-fire guns platforms. They literally cut infantry lines in half and also soft skinned vehicles. That's the sort of 'infantry walks into an ambush' scenario, but even still... not something you want pointed your way.

Those surface-to-air missiles are indeed SA-3's, NATO name: GOA Both the target acquisition radar and the fire control/guidance radar are missing from the movie. One battalion has 4 launchers, each launcher with 4 missiles. The missiles are guided by the fire control radar to the target (not heat seeking missiles). One battery can attack 1 target at the time, with 2 missiles, only if the target speed is not above 750m/s Two missiles can be launched, with a 5 sec interval. A missile has a 70 kg (154.3 lbs) warhead and 4500 pieces of shrapnel More than 20 countrie still operate the SA-3 system. Cuba, Poland, Russia and Ukraine developed modernisation programmes during the years P.S. This same system shot down one F-117 and a F-16 over Serbia, in 1999

Yeah - Newa SC from Poland is what it looks like, way too old for the force that has SU-57. They should have used Pantsir(SA-22 NATO) or Tor(SA-15 NATO), and placed them at the bottom of the valley. How do you get those massive things on the ridge and keep them operating? No way. Also Pantsir does have cannons. Which is what should have been used as the range is too short. Also as the guys mentioned the range of those missiles is good enough to take out all of the planes over the sea.

Then when it cuts from an internal cockpit shot to the external view again, their Super Hornet has *exactly* the same roll angle as in the internal shot (about 15 degrees right), still rolling left. I spent two summers in Coronado, the first few months at the BOQ on base. I was the guest of a Captain's daughter- he was away teaching ROTC in Oregon when I got to Coronado and wouldn't meet me until months later. By the time he got back I was staying in his house with his two daughters and wife. Their entire family served in the US Armed Forces in some capacity- he and I would stay up til late and he would tell me about his old war stories from Vietnam, while I watched him down a bottle of gin. By the time I left their home, he gave me a key to their house and told me I would always be welcome there. The two of you reminded me of him. Thank you, and keep' em coming.

The frag on an Aim-9 is actually really cool how it works. Not sure if it's the same on other missiles, but basically there's a bunch of steel rods wrapped around the missile running parallel to the missile, with alternating ends welded to the adjacent rod (think of like chopsticks where they're connected on 1 end, then imagine a third chopstick connected to the opposite tip of one of the other 2, etc) all the way around the missile with the explosive running down the center. So when it detonates, all the rods expand out in a big "halo" around the missile, creating a huge circular guillotine to slice whatever it hit. I always just assumed it was a bunch of random frag, or the casing of the warhead was the frag material, etc. didn't realize it was that "engineered".

26:03 to my recolection (at least how it works in DCS for the legacy hornet and from reading the NATOPS) the thumb switch is what dispenses the countermeasures. The button on the side is the emergency jett, and the switch on the lower front panel below the AMPCD is what switches you into bypass mode. And that allows you to drop chaff or flare seperately in 2 a piece per press
