also notice how the fighters in homeworld 1 take TARGETS OF OPPORTUNITY during their spread out strafes, while the fighters in homeworld 3 all focus down the same one target redundantly.

I gotta double check to confirm, but I’m pretty sure my interceptor squadron did take pot shots at targets of opportunity in HW3. As they were turning around to make another pass at their selected target, I’m certain I saw them pick off an enemy strike craft that flew in front of them. Sadly though, one thing I hate is how it’s impossible to have an injured unit break off and dock for repairs since the enemy just hunts them down and picks them off so easily since they don’t zig zag any more 😢

If anything, the travesty that is Homeworld 3 can be congratulated for the fact that it made me replay 1, Cataclysm and 2. But that's probably the most backhanded compliment ever.

Idk if you guys knew, but in HM1 the strikecraft and corvettes that are are set to evasive and neutral, when they run low on fuel or are damaged, they returned automatically to the nearby support frigate for repairs and resume the command. Also, they also did zig zag patterns to avoid incoming fire. Pretty neat, sadly it got sacked away in HW2

Inferior game made for money with no love in it, sad that the coding in 1 from the 90’s is better than the coding in 3 from nearly 30 years later. Not to mention when you ambushed from the Z axis in HW1 they actually kept the positional advantage and attacked their target from the upper and lower angles instead in HW3 we can elevate them on the z axis or depress them but they come up to the horizontal plane before moving to attack completely eliminating the advantage given to them with the angle of attack of being above or below their target.

It's weird but seeing the two next to each other really makes you realise how much the scenery in 3 looks like a background rather than an organic part of the scene. Like all those big ships just sort of look like a photo and don't have much context to them.

Old games just went so above and beyond simple to try to push the technology of the time. Modern games purposely hold back as much as they can so everything remains stagnant. When it the last time you saw a game do something revolutionary that wasn’t just making you buy a new graphics card?

@@Krysnha I mean you say the same, but I haven't seen anything close. All I see is that you get the latest gear just to be able to run a game that is barely baked, buggy as hell, and still barely runs even on the latest hardware. So they are pushing everyone to get the latest tech instead of pushing the boundaries of tech everyone currently has for games with nothing in them and that still don't run. It's all a scam.

@@catscrath25alpha83 Yes, i mean i understand, all i see is being push more teck to run the latest game that looks the same, feels the same, and works the same, i watch a video about why games are so demanding and all is because grafics, more grafics, and i ask miself, more grafics for fibers, more grafics for ligth effect and the game looks like crap, worst is that you limit the amount of people can play, why is mobile winning, why more people play retro because gaming become too epensive and why is becoming expensive more grafics, more marketing campaing, more and more people that do bs, and what we have buggy games, full of DLC, DEI and all these bs, so gaming is no longer about gaming but about grafics, i understand where you are going and a lot of people is realizing, we go for grafics that only make the game looks worst

I'm fascinated at how much regression has occurred between hw1 and hw3. Simple default ship behaviors being fundamentally broken during the beta-tests, suspicion that the worst offenders of hw2's engine are still at play in hw3, and the unusually high level of micromanagement required (high APM) to get ships to function like their hw1 & cata counterparts. This doesn't at all touch at the missing ship classes.

I know it's kinda a defence, but both in HW1&2 ship movement and many other things were broken at launch. Remember that both of these games is now in their end state, after many patches. So not really a fair comparison:) I give it a year to see what BBI can do. But I fear that the introduction of space objects and tunnels within. Forced them to have a simple ship movement Design :(

@@user-nq2oz8tf2l No I'm talking about HW1 back in 1999 and 2003 for HW 2. Homeworld 1 had serious hardware issues, lack of sound, didn't find cd ROM, graphic artifacts or even it just didn't launch.. but that's how it was back then :P For HW2 it had pathfind issues and alot of balancing before it became good. But congrats if you had none of these xD

@@Paisa231 I got hw2 as an early graduation gift back in 2003 and you aren't wrong. HW2's launch was not well received and took years for official patches & modders to clean it up to being presentable. There used to be a thread on the relic forums (offlined in 2017) detailing HW2's rushed development and internal problems leading up to it's botched launch and sloppy mechanics. The 1.1 patch for hw2 was dec 2003 and it'd not be until 2006 when the community patch finished that cleanup. As for homeworld 1 classic, the last official patch (1.05) came out in 2000, a year after release. HW1 didn't have the same level of problems as 2 did by miles and the patch notes leading up to .05 are relatively minor in comparison (exceedingly minor things like "slightly reduced repair frigate repair rates" and "fixed false-positives triggering firewall warnings for multiplayer."

@@Paisa231 yes Homeworld 1999 had hardware issues, but it was more on the hardware itself. At that time as there was rime and dozen different techs due to quick technological progress, Readme itself contained tested configurations and recommended settings for specific cards. The Demo version from back then works better than the godsforsaken Classic rerelease which appears to be built on the Relic 2003 source code release as the bugs/crashes appear to be very similar. Never experienced pathing issues in the unpatched HW2, Balance was definitely "interesting", through not most healthy for MP

If it's the story, it's because an activists became head boss of the story design.... With the current technical side of gameplay, it can still be tweaked with patches. So hopefully they can bring more aspects from HW 1&2 back. But don't expect everything as HW3 has a faster gameplay design. Maybe modders will do it :D

Deserts of Kharak was a much simpler game and was generic af. It missed the themes of HW1 and was more like HW2. At best DoK was mediocre, but a sign things were only going downhill.

​@@Paisa231HW3's faster game design isnt exactly "fast". its pretty much a war of attrition with very little thought and positioning, and a competition for who can produce the most fighters to win... Alot will have to do to change the AI behaviours to make the units as "intelligent" as older homeworld games.

Capital ships in HW3 are phenomenally unintelligent and useful only to absorb damage. Only torpedo frigates are somewhat useful due to their range

HW1 (original, not the remastered version) is still ahead of the curve in terms of gameplay and mechanics. The story was also really compelling. While the credits don't list any, the way the gameplay and combat are modeled makes it feel like Relic had some military advisors help out (or they really studied!) on the first game. HW2 also polished up the controls. Sadly, they seem to have really cut corners and dropped the ball with HW3. It's like they felt the need to reinvent the wheel when everything was already in place! WHYY??

Don't forget the abilities in HW3. Are you playing a twitch MMO? No. But you have to micromanage your pilots to tell them how and when to use their ship correctly.

Even in the Remaster released awhile back this scripting is broken and nonfunctional. Game devs today are a cargo cult trying to copy the looks and surface level stuff, incapable of understanding the deeper mechanics that made the games of the past work so well.

In my opinion the original Homeworld 1, not the remaster, will never be matched in RTS gameplay and story. Can replay it again and again and never sick of it.

Get remaster (for eye candy visuals) and search for the AI community mod fix. Presto: you have the og HW1 with the remastered graphics.

Cataclysm comes pretty close, and even overtakes the original in places. It's a vastly different feel and design, but it works so damn well. Even the special abilities the units had, unlike HW3, were interesting and required tactical thought.

Back when I was working in the HWRM mod I had a script that used to mimic very closely the behavior of the fighters of HW1 in the HW2 engine, but it tanked the performance so I decided it was not worth it. I only kept the fuel script and the drone script, and those alone cut your performance in half...

They have resources to do it from scratch. Surface lvl mod is going to be heavy on the cpu. HW1 was able to do it on an ancient hardware.

Except I havent seen anyone trying to defend HW3. Its fairly universally acknowledged even now that its rubbish compared to its predecessors, and the story has also been almost universally panned for being terrible. Dont waste your time getting angry at people that literally dont exist.

It was the figthers, exactly them, that had me *quit* (outright *QUIT* -- alt+f4 style) on the demo, after I could not get them to behave in a reasonable fashion, after multiple attempts: they *insisted* on accumulating needless losses, that had me *pull my hair out,* by their idiotic behavior, shots wasted on overkills and [as a result of that] *absurd* losses (losing 1:1 in a 2:1 or even 3:1 engagement is flat out unacceptable against equal opponents!)... I mean: have you ever cared to _zoom in_ onto their behavior? - central ship vs. inside track vs. outside? Their asinine -ballett-routine- _synchronized-swimming choreography_ (!) is comical to the utmost degree! Like they were *only* eyeing the b-score (icedancing), not caring about a sound, object driven routine and technical aspects of... Dogfighting lethal enemies in space, with your lifes on the line! (But that's secondary. Men dying needless deaths in beautiful dancing routines, shall only ever serve as the backdrop to the angsty coming of age story of a hereditary _stronk woman_ ... rme ) Some ships outright *stop in their tracks* (because: space! AmIRight!?!), others speed like crazy, all to accomodate the *middle ship,* which just enforces *its own* flight path onto all its -wingmen- slaves/extensions. It's absurd! Utterly absurd! ... and impossible to _unsee_ after you noticed it. It's (dare I say it?) _Total Wars_ "one unit per formation [running the show, in the background _sImUlAtIoN]"_ -- all over again! But while for TW, it was all about their cinematic take-down-animations (rme), that promptet this ludicrous behavior (/design directive); what is the "excuse" for HW? -- it just seems lazy[est of the lazyest] programming for unit-behavior... That's all! Needless to say: I put my expectations on ice, after that sad, sad experience. [Now:] seeing the fallout, the narcissist template of woke storytelling, ruin the final game though, is more than _icing on the_ proverbial _[shit]cake;_ worse than I could have ever dreamed off of, in my worst nightmares. And the [unacceptable] mechanical shortcomings still persist! What a bummer... Tripple A and greedy suits? Ruins every franchise! As do uninspired narcissistic busybodies like Lin Joyce....... Just compare her face (a) with (b) "Imogen" [revised], (c) Imogen [original trailer, 3 years back] and (d) the voice-actor of Imogen (i): Some detractors/shills/sycophants actually claimed, that "b" was closer to "d" than "c" was... Now take THAT, and make up your own opinion; and then take (a) into the equation. Srsly? Do they take us for idiots? It is a blatant self-insert, if ever I saw one... And that explains so so much about all the [altered?] storyparts that are there to accomodate this narcissistic blunder... What a $#&@ show! i) why even have this gynocentric dynasty? (The many female S'Jets... Because they have no competent male offspring, ever (yet... same last name?)... What are they? Clones? Like from Kamino? Ffs.?!?) Why? - why a dynasty at all? Even more so for the shit-sandwhich of an ending. (Just three women, the crown of creation. All men just die as face-less drones, except the token black guy o/c, who served as a stirrup holder, but was still required, before the finale, to fade off into the dark, [leaving the stage to the only people that count,] as all males are expected to do... duh!) Gosh, am I ever thankful for YT on that! Being just one click away from sparing myself a 60€ letdown! Yes! :D ... _Hey folks! Mass-murdering psychopathic tyrants are only ever just_ *misunderstood* _and shall all be forgiven in hyperspace-nirvana, my fellow_ -brethren!- _sistren!_ IF -- they are women (o/c!)... Otherwise: get back into _formation,_ grunt! Your queen demands a beautiful, needless death, to honor her presence! _Ave, domina! - morituri te salutant!_ ... Really... When you decode the narcissistic enigma-machine, it just becomes an abhorrent sight to behold! Please, the best tactic in 3, is build everithing surrouding your mother ship and move the blob of death, no tactic or strategy, Arch show it in the game, try to do something else your ships are destroy like nothing, twoer defence in space, yes is so good

well my friend you criticism is shurely correct but why did you use the first mission of homeworld 3 for the comparison when this mission takes place in atmosphere where the first mission of homeworld 1 was in space.
