You merely need to comprehend the basic concept of "dash cancel off a poke" and then the idea that its no longer a poke, which is barely a fighting game concept at that point, its an action game concept, control of space exists in any combat action game

Fitting, since Abel was originally intended to be the protagonist of SF4, and the moveset of the original SF protagonist (Ryu) was also designed to be boring, but practical.

The most interesting he ever got was in SFxT where he had a weird obsession with bears, at least that’s ANYTHING you can latch on to as a character.

Well, he’s one of the first grapplers in SF to not be slow as shit, and I feel like fast grapplers like a Sol Badguy type are always kinda fun to watch

I was never a fan of characters with a rekka, but I still found Abel to be really fun to play for the reason you mentioned.

@@Hornet.919 Actually it is supposed to be Sambo which is why he wears a gi with MMA gloves and tight shorts instead of pants. normallly you would see wrestling shoes but they also cut the sleeves off for stylistic choice. He was based on Fedor "The Last Emperor" Emelianenko (made Sambo famous in MMA) and David Douillet (Judo champion). It is even a replica of the Kurtka (Russian for jacket, the term used for sambo players) and gloves Fedor wore, again symbolizing his Sambo background. This also is why many confuse his throws for judo despite his clear wrestling skills, as Sambo is a combination of skills from Judo, Jujutsu, Kurash, Bökh, Ssireum, Greco-Roman Wrestling, Folkstyle Wrestling, Freestyle Wrestling, Catch Wrestling, Alysh, etc.

Abel is easily my favorite grappler, so seeing this is really painful. Just completely removes what makes him such a cool character in favor of turning him into a much more generic one.

Used to be my SF4 main before I discovered how fun Hugo is. Abel is so sick and a character no other SF character since has really played like. Would be a waste to not bring this character back again

Streaming and internet connection ruined fighting games. All this update bullshit with nerfing the characters every other day In the original days the game was it and that's it. There wasn't a million KZfaqrs crying above characters being too "OP" then Capcom changing shit all the time

@@MybeautifulandamazingPrincess Tons of fighting games back in the day had revisions. MK1 had 5 different versions in arcade. SF2 has dozens of different revisions, not even accounting for the actual different versions. It happened all the time, it was just primarily out of sight.

@@nextgencowboy Sure, but once you bought a physical game that's what you had, which I prefer personally. I hate that because of e-sports fighting games, specially street fighter, need to keep changing mechanics, characters, etc cetera. I hate it when I really like a character then they change it or nerf it Plus it's nowhere near the same as now, with the digital streaming and download, they release updates every other day changing the characters, nerfing stuff left and right, which I hate!

Wanted to say I found your channel through the smash vids, and as someone who barely knows anything about other fighting games it's been interesting to learn about stuff from these other games. I think it's a good format that balances being interesting and down to earth enough a casual (such as myself for SF) can enjoy it, while still being in-depth enough that hardcore players of each game would enjoy it (I really enjoyed your Melee vids and even learned some new stuff).

I learned about Omega via Bafael's Omega series, and in all of them (he did about like 15 or so characters), all existing special moves were intact (some were modified, but they were still there, and generally had the same function). All new specials were in addition to the existing kit. Abel is the only Omega character I know of who lost special moves completely, and it’s a complete downgrade. As an aside, I wish Omega was more prevalent. The only real use was testing stuff for SFV, and it's kinda sad. If T. Hawk comes back in a future game, he's not going to have his cool Omega stuff, for example (I know his moves were prototypes for Necalli, but still, he was much better in Omega).

A lot of stuff from Omega should have been added to the normal moves (like Guile’s Blitz Combination, or all of T. Hawk's changes). Some of them came back, but for different reasons-a lot of Omega T. Hawk was used for Necalli, which is sad because T. Hawk might not have those things in a future game.

@@nebiyuesayas5600 Cody Ultra 2 getting a better partial connect is the number 1 change that I wish was in Ultra. The biggest issue is that it essentially invalidates Ultra 1 as an option so I understand why they didn't do it, but I never use Ultra 1 anyway so I would have welcomed that change.

Shit, and I didn't even know Omega T.Hawk had that jank ranged ground projectile(?) thing. Hell, i'd be fascinated with a whole different spin-off series just describing Omega Mode characters at length. They feel so underrepresented online as far as in-depth analysis like this video. At least from what i've seen. If only we could use these styles in Arcade Mode... then i'd actually get a chance to actually play around with this stuff. Someone needs to mod that in, i'm serious.

That's a good one. Hsien-Ko is such a non-functional character in that game that her only strengths (Infinite armor pendulum assist and super loops with gong) involve burning meter that she's not even good at building. Iron Fist might be a decent subject as well.

But he feels a bit more straight forward on why he isn't great. and IMO Hsien-ko is just way worse in so many weird and specific ways She can't do the fast movement everyone else can, he damage is semi random and even then its very much below average, her biggest niche of being an assist character is done in a similar way, and better with Arthur.

@@ManlyPlant Definitely true. If this series did more Vs Capcom stuff I would also want to suggest Gold Lightan and Marvel Infinite Ryu. On Infinite's note, a video breaking down why nobody would EVER pick Mind Stone would be quick and fun.

Ryu ain't even the biggest bad character in Infinite imo, yea he's one of the big two that people think of when it's the low tier, but Chris is just a character that was designed with so many handicaps for some reasons and how many nerfs he got from 3 to Infinite is an interesting topic Mindstone is absolutely wack though. When you have options that can either deny movement and the main mechanics of the game or one that can give said mechanic back to you. One that just gives you meter is always gonna stick out as the weakest link.

@@ManlyPlant Infinite Ryu would be similar to these Omega videos, he lost SO MUCH compared to 3 which gave him like 6 brand new moves. Also the Mind Stone command grab scales so much that the combo after is worthless, and you don't gain meter during supers during Mind Storm, but the Storm still ticks down, so you can still end up METER NEGATIVE depending on how you use it, and every Storm provides a free Level 3 anyway.

While I enjoy this review of the character I think it's important to remember than Omega Mode was a developer playground to test out ideas and concepts for the next game in the franchise. Abel's moves were altered so drastically to try and find a new concept for someone to use in SFV.

I think a lot of them re-use animations, like Abel's Tackle using his focus attack animation or Hugo's uppercut using part of his victory animation, it's kinda neat to see imo

I'd imagine because omega was pretty much just one last version and probably didn't really have a budget to work off of, since at that time SFV was the main thing they were doing.

At 0:23 you say you forgot to mention quickstanding all throws in the Hugo video, but at 8:01 in the Hugo video you do bring it up. Not to sound whiny, I just watched the Hugo vid and felt like I remembered it.

As a person who Love's Abel as a playable character and even his own personality, I think that Abel really missed out by being put in SF4. I think he would've been great in SF3. The focus on Neutral game would've helped him a lot and the 50/50s would've made him King.

I like the Grappling move because they are just throws without the crazy spinning and crashing. They almost feel like extra normal throws which is cool.

I love when you make these videos! Due to Guilty Gear Strive being released I think Potemkin should be given a look in Guilty Gear Revelator 2...as a Potemkin main in most Gg games...I feel Potemkin was bad in Revelator but was worst in Revelator 2.

It's be interesting to see an SFV low-tier like Gill or Nash, just to show off how well-balanced it is compared to the other entries. That is, if you can really find much to say about it... Can't imagine "it's not bad, it's just not *as* good as what other characters have" over and over would be up to your standards!

Funnily enough Gief would be a good contender for this, Nash feels like a great character after his most recent buffs, but Gief who was already a low tier just received a massive nerf and is probably bottom 1

the thing i like about Omega Hugo is he feels like Broly from dragon ball z… his fully invincible uppercut is just him reaching one arm up… fullycharge a medium punch, and you get hurt 70 damage just by the _WIND_ he pushes by whiffing it…. omega abel always felt like a weird mistake. something u didnt even cover in this video: HE STILL HAS HIS TORNADO THROW!!!! why does he even need to replace his hi/low rekka with 4 command grabs if he already has an iconic one?????

they made abel more like marduk in tekken, which makes more sense in grappling terms. a long range grapple promotes shutting off enemy button presses with footsies and removes the annoying stepkick situation that required the defensive player to stuff the tornado throw with a frame perfect 3f normal. i get it, it was his identity but man was it inconsistent and hard to defend against. step kick should've always been a whiff punish normal, not just get pressure for free card.

there's defintely some hesistion going on with his new tools but old CoD was a dumb mixup even on block so i get the changes. especially stepkick c. hp CoD FADC was such an easily confirmable 50%+ damage lucky hit that really plagued SFIV.

I really hated how Change of Direction was messed up: Abel's fighting style is based on Russian Sambo, which mixes strikes and throws altogether with great fluidity.

I am certain you actually did mention Omega Mode allowing quick stand after all throws somewhere around the middle of your Omega Hugo video. I am only certain because I watched that like a week ago and am also certain that I didn't know it beforehand, having never touched the last _SF4_ iteration in any capacity. Still, better safe than sorry to mention it again in this video. Speaking of things I never knew, I was unaware you could link s.HP after Abel's Step Kick. Huh. I despise 1-frame links for the most part, but it's good to know, and it helped further illustrate how screwing with Step Kick in Omega Mode is what ultimately screws over Omega Abel so much. Funny how a single command normal can make or break a character. Having looked at other comments here, gods, I can't imagine Omega Zangief being *even worse.* Sadly, it is on brand for Capcom to more or less murder that poor man while pretending he still exists in a game's code though. At least Omega Abel got one of those neat, rare anti-crouch throws for his suffering. I doubt Omega Gief got anything interesting beyond the seeming nod to his _EX_ series self. Sigh.

Honestly, these should have been the changes Omega Abel got: - Abel's change of direction is now an ACTUAL REKKA (meaning that you have to input QCF+P/K for the additional mids/lows, but the first hit would still be QCF+P) - All versions of Abel's command grab just have throw invincibility, while the damage is slightly decreased - Abel gets his tackle special, but it's DP+K so that way it doesn't conflict with his roll, and the EX version cancels to ultra 1 - Abel's wheel kicks are overheads (like in omega) and they are safe on block

Combos after EX Tackle are sadly more limited than I expected, you can combo into Crouch HP, but nothing after it. You can't even juggle into a regular tackle, only EX which does very mediocre damage

You mentioned that you can't quickstand Omega Hugo's SPD, which is technically true, but only because they essentially made it auto-quickstand (the knockdown time is way shorter by default). If you could rise any faster it would practically be unsafe on hit lol. Here's some Omega Abel stuff that wasn't touched on or was slightly off: - Close MK is -5 on block, and -6 if dash cancelled, so he doesn't actually get to push a mixup; he just dies for using it outside of punishes. His dash is incredibly fast though so you might get away with it. Actually I think his dash speed is a big part of why they made him the way he is, he can just appear in your face like 3S Ken. - Tornado Throw had some changes, the EX version is both strike/throw invuln but the regular version has no invuln at all, so that took away one of his more unique defensive attributes (probably still a buff overall though imo). - Tackles are actually -4/-3/-2 for LK/MK/HK uncharged versions. He can build meter quickly by doing tackle + feint repeatedly from long range, so he can kinda force the opponent to approach to stop him from getting a ton of meter (or bait them into throwing a fireball, then punish with Ultra). He also has a glitch where if you input Feint too early, he freezes until he gets hit. - His Super got massively buffed, it does 85 more damage and is 0 on block with insanely fast whiff recovery. But you probably won't see it very often since EX Tackle is so important for his gameplan. - The reason his Close LP target combo doesn't always work is that the proximity range for it to activate is very short, and some characters collision boxes will push you too far away. - He got a new air command normal with Down+HP, it's by far his strongest jumpin but his jumps are still mediocre overall.

I don't know why it bothers me so much but I really can't stand watching supposedly solid bodies become all intangible when they're near each other. I have no idea how they can fix that, in games in general, but I wish they would. I can't even use Urien's Donovan skin in SFV, even though I love it in game, because his victory screen has his beads mesh with his head and neck. It's horrifying. It seems to have been worse in SFIV and that might be part of the reason why the game wasn't aesthetically pleasing to me. Never thought about it until now because it was all I was noticing in this video.

Ok so I haven't played V but for what I've seen in gameplay they work around this by having the models in different layers so it doesn't give that weird effect, it sometimes doesn't always works though and models mesh together anyway

@@yeyo1019 yeah I noticed that in SFV, and it does look much better. Like I said, in game (SFV) it's alright, it's only that victory screen that upsets me. lol SFIV was uncomfortable to look at though, for me at least, but mostly only with the idle animations. When they're moving and colliding when the hitboxes are activated it's not so bad.
