If China were to invade Taiwan, would Japan and the United States fight together? What conflicts would arise from this? Would the United States truly defend Taiwan? We are excited to present our first international collaboration project as TV Tokyo World Politics. Shinsaku Toshima welcomes Johnny Harris, the most influential independent American KZfaq journalist in the English-speaking world with over 5 million subscribers to his channel, for an in-depth discussion on the realities of the Japan-U.S. alliance. This time, Harris has participated in the training of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force in Okinawa and has covered the military buildup in the southwestern islands. What is the reason for sending this video to the world and to the Japanese people now? We will thoroughly listen to how he views the Japan-U.S. alliance from an American's point of view.

This channel should investigate Korean-American youth attitudes about Japan in the US. We have such large and vibrant communities of Korean people here in Los Angeles, and their attitudes about Japan are far different than their grandparents. I wonder if Japanese youth feel the same way?

When there is a language barrier, it becomes difficult to deliver information to the world, even when something happens. Misunderstandings often arise because things are not explained well enough, or because the meaning is completely reversed, or because the background and details of an issue are deliberately omitted. Exaggerated and frivolous information from Japan is easily translated, while the parts that should be reported seriously are often not translated at all. I would appreciate it if there were English subtitles available.

(I have a limited insiders knowledge of US geopolitical process and strategy from my time making documentaries for National Geographic, so please don’t consider me an authority.) “Would the US fight alongside Japan if Japan, or Tawain and Japan, was attacked?” The short answer is “yes. It is as close to 100% as it can reasonably be.” The longer, more accurate answer, is “it depends on many things.” One of the most important dependencies is public sentiment. The American public “speaks” about war in existential terms (fighting for democracy, saving the homeland, protecting American soil, etc…), but the way it has consistently proven to think and react to war has more to do with the concept of Justice than survival or necessity. Even in the failures of American war action (Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan), one will see split in public sentiment along lines of what is the Just thing to do (save the people from dictators, rebuild the country, etc…) and what is pragmatically achievable (at what cost? How many American lives? How many civilian lives? How much more money? Did we become the bad guys?? Etc…) If Japan were to ever be attacked by West Taiwan in the same way that, say, Ukraine was attacked by Russia, the American public would most likely 90%+ in favor of direct military action. If a Japanese island inhabited by less than 100 people were to be taken over by West Taiwan by military force, the percentage might not be as high, but the whole might of the US Navy and Marine Corps would immediately intervene with some kind of show of force. To the hosts’ question “would the American public grow resentful that American blood was being shed on Japanese soil?”, my opinion somewhat differs from Johnny Harris’s. I think most Americans are aware of Title 9, even if they don’t know it by name. Every American knows the broad-stroke history of WW2 and understands that Japan is a prosperous nation of peace as well as our #1 ally in the region. I would speculate that there would be a call for Japan to rescind Article 9 and begin building a military, but I don’t think the American public would ever feel disappointed by Japan’s lack of ability to land armed forces on the beaches of West Taiwan and march to Beijing. Never forget the power of cultural bonds. For anybody under the age of 50, an attack on Japanese soil would feel like an attack on American soil. The cultural bonds are that strong.

Johnny talked about the Trump presidency so accurately when it comes to foreign policy. And that could really embolden countries like Russia and China. That’s scary even for Americans.
