Episode Notes:
1. Captured on real hardware via the Pack-A-Punch 480p RGB cable.
2. This was planned for a US release, but cancelled at the 11th hour.
3. Much of the team that created this game also did Virtua Fighter 3.
4. Kuhn is a Dural like boss that has many of the moves of the other Vipers. He's really hard on the higher difficulties.
5. BM has to be the worst boss name ever.

The first Fighting Vipers had the most kickass soundtrack of all Sega fighting games. Picky and Mahler stage were classic thrash metal songs, Jane and Raxel stages were 80s metal and Candys also had the upbeat rock sound. I used to always play on Picky's stage just for the music.

The Dreamcast was the first console that was arcade perfect in most cases, but it lacked dominance in other areas, it need more RPGs, more football FIFA etc to have been the all over console. Shame, because I adore this machine, but I'm aware of it's short comings

@@fitnessabcvideo I mean it was an amazing console but yes it wasn't perfect. A lot of people give some of the giant gaping holes in it's line up a pass simply because it was Sega's last console. It is a shame the Dreamcast never really got to really stretch it's legs and push itself to it's limits. I would have loved to see what it could have done had it been given a full generation instead of barely half if that.

Sega consoles were so awesome for arcade style games which are my favorite style of game. I just love throwing on a game for an hour at max and having an absolute blast. It's the reason I love the Saturn so much. It has amazing fighting and shooting games and also light gun games. It's just an awesome system that's quickly becoming one of my all time favorites.

I didn’t throw much coin at the arcade version of VF3, and played the Dreamcast version. I personally preferred it to soul Calibur. Was it really that much worse on Dreamcast! The only difference I see on KZfaq comparisons is the washed out colours on DC. I remember liking it a lot in the day, but DOA 2 was my fave fighting game on the DC.

Oh wow...I never knew this existed. This is something that I would have been more than happy to pay for the heavy import fees for. I absolutely loved the Sega Dreamcast and I was with it the very day it dropped. As we sit on the cusp of a brand new generation (tomorrow!) It's nice to look back at a console that brought us so much joy and was taken from us far too soon. Hey Sega Lord, are you going to be getting the new consoles this week? I decided to go all in with this new generation and completely old school. This is likely going to be the very last generation with physical based media...so I wanted to do it with a bang. I preordered both the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 *physical disc version. I actually waited in line at my local GamStop like old times...it was actually quite fun.

Aside Kuhn, you can also unlock Delsol (Random Mode only) and B.M (Super KO) as playable characters. There are other few touches that you haven't mentioned, one of them being the fact you can finish a fight with having the opponent's body hanging from the top of the cage walls (if they land there on a specific way after you throw, uppercut or kick them upwards as the last blow). There's also a neat touch that doesn't seem to be very well know: some characters (not quite sure if all) has an extra pallet swap other than the two that you can choose from. I haven't played in well over a decade, but if memory doesn't fail me, I believe you can get those based on a key combo (A+Y, A+X, A+X+R or A+X+R, maybe paired with "UP" or not or something along those lines? Again, it's been a while...) when you select the characters. Best way to do the trial and error (and you see the colours on their names change to reflect those colours) is to use the mode where you choose up to 5 fighters for a "Gauntlet" match. I'd have to get my console and give it a try to refresh my memory on this.

I wonder the same thing. Firstly, if it's a fighting game like this, it doesn't even really need to be translated. Secondly, if there's an English version in Europe, it REALLY doesn't need to be translated. All of the work is already done. All you need to do is get it to another continent (maybe in a different box, and make sure it is NTSC). How hard is that? Even if it doesn't make much money, you've spent extremely little effort on it, so it should still be worth it.
@wyterabitt2149

@@Rationalific It cost a fortune to produce the physical media, and then marketing and distribution costs (it has to physically get out there), and securing partners for selling. All for a game that a few might want? You can argue whether or not they made mistakes identifying if a specific game would be popular enough. But it is not like today where everything is much cheaper, the process of choosing which games and not bringing some over was absolutely needed.
@JohnDoe-wq5eu
@JohnDoe-wq5eu 3 жыл бұрын
Also it should be said this was after Sega had officially announced they were getting out and the Dreamcast was essentially dead at that point. Surprisingly (but not very much) Japan is actually closer (physically) to the UK (and Australia interestingly enough) so they tend to get imports over there more than the US does. It's a logistics issue if anything. It's a closer market that's much easier to ship to than halfway around the world.

Games with a heavy reliance on juggling (especially air juggling) are never fun to play with a friend. One person always ends up sitting there watching their character take abuse until it's "their turn" to attack again. This is why Street Fighter II and Mortal Kombat II hold up so well. Every moment of a round is a new confrontation and a new face-off. You're never just... observing. I remember in Tekken 2, if I'm not mistaken, there was a King combo that could kill you without ever having an opportunity to counter once it began. Anyway, solid vid on a generally unknown title here in the US. Good stuff.

I have the european version on this one, as the now sadly closed store I bought it from had both at the same price back then. I miss that store... anyway, I was never a huge fan of Fighting Vipers, but I was willing to try pretty much anything on the late Saturn and Dreamcast. I love the European box art, and it does play a pretty crisp game for what it is. I'm always a 2D fighter at heart, though, so it's always been on the back burner in my house. I still play it now and again, though, as those bright colors and distinct Sega flair are always a welcome sight

Agree with the complain about Sega not adding extra content. If this game was released today one would think that it is free basic version and that you have to buy the rest of the content as DLC.

@@Gambit771 I mean I know the master system and mega drive (genesis) were incredibly popular in the UK but Saturn and the Dreamcast, no clue. But I'm speaking as an american who watched the Saturn flop and the Dreamcast get largely ignored because of the PS2. I personally loved it though.

It's a good game for sure, bit was easily by past by many. I even played the original and Fighters Megamix way way more than this game. But the reality is that we'll most likely never see a new Fighter Vipers again, so if this is indeed the last game it's certainly not a bad one. Great video as always.

"segas european product manager, revealed all before we punched him through the window" Lol! You cannot get more late 90s-early 00s British gaming magazine than that. Literally the main mags I used to get then we're N64/NGC magazine, the official playstation magazine and occasionally Amiga Format and PC Gamer; all were edited and written by people with a very similar direct and on the nose approach. I miss those heady yet slightly obnoxious (yet playful) journalist days. Now everybody's a pussy.

Haha, true. Our decrepit husk of what once was a great and wonderful nation is now ripe with decay...and funnily enough it kind of feels like it’s going in the direction of Demolition Man’s future utopia/dystopia. Free 🐀 🍔 for everyone!! You get swarmed and ticketed by little drones who zoom around to make sure that no one that has offended another can go unpunished! I really wish that they would’ve explained how the 3 seashells worked in the movie though, might become useful.

See, IDC what people say about the sega model 3 arcade ports that were done on the sega dreamcast back in the day, they got a lot of crap for not being 💯% arcade perfect but if you truly and I mean truly look at them and appreciate the fact that sega was bringing “ at the time “ the most powerful arcade hardware on the market to the home system known as the sega dreamcast, it was amazing to even see these ports come home at all, I mean for example one of my all time favorite model 3 games fighting vipers 2 was actually so close on the DC it was a better praised port then virtua fighter 3 on the DC cuz fighting vipers 2 wasn’t as rushed at all when coming home to the DC I can fully remember playing the Japanese exclusive FV2 DC port for the first time and thought to myself “ wow this is segas most powerful arcade hardware running in my own room on this white dreamcast box” it was as close as possible without having to shell thousands of dollars back then to get a sega model 3 arcade machine in your home So me being a model 3 fan to the max I’ve always appreciate the model 3 ports that have come home to the sega dreamcast because there so darn close to being arcade perfect it still amazes me to this day to have them in my collection ❤️

@Estorium
@Estorium 3 жыл бұрын
It might just be because I am watching this on a mobile phone, but I initially thought that at the beginning of the video you were showing Saturn footage, until I noticed the 3D backgrounds. I think the reviewers were right to criticise the graphics as they appear decidedly previous gen. That said, graphics do not a good game make. I think that the 5th and (initially) 6th gens were way to focused on graphics over gameplay. Then again, seeing the heated fights happening on Twitter regarding Series X vs PS5 (resolutions, ray tracing, bla bla bla) I guess that nothing has really changed.
