yep before he had a title shot he lost a fight he felt he won by decision so promised himself he'd never let it go to decision again, most fighters after that never went the distance with him (except Leonard obviously)

Hagler was a great fighter 👏 💪 but Ray was a great boxer!! Facts! Ray knew Hagler could not out box him!! So he gave Hagler a lesson in boxing!! And just like TBE Floyd money Mayweather 💰 no one could beat him boxing or fighting! So Floyd showed the world that nobody could beat him! But Hagler got exposed!! Mad punching is usually stupid punching!! Ray out smarted Hagler!!

I watched most of his fights and I was 20 yrs old in ‘87. I saw Hagler pressing the fight and for most of the fight S ray was backing up dancing n throwing flash n dash but back peddling most of the night. Hagler won the fight based on the fact he was the aggressor and the current champion all s ray was that night was a mosquito.

"I felt that Hagler EASILY won" It was a close fight, but Sugar Ray won it. I saw it live too and have watched 3 or 4 times since, I even saw this fight again a few weeks ago and I couldn't disagree more with you. The thing is, fights are not scored on "feelings" they're scored on a round by round basis. the most rounds won wins the fight. Leonard was a welter who hadn't fought for 3 years *and had one fight in almost 5 years!) and this was his second comeback from a retirement which makes his win all the more amazing. On the night SRL was slicker, faster, moved better, had brilliant defense, never got wobbled and just out boxed Hagler for at least 7 rounds of the 12. Watch the fight again and this time turn off the sound and have a score card in front of you and score each round, then tell me Hagler won. Hagler fought with the wrong strategy, while SRL fought the perfect fight, Marvelous was made to look flatfooted, slow, couldn't get off, his timing looked off, he was looking for a KO all night and SRL didn't allow him to. MMH got peppered by SRL all night. and sure, the rounds that Hagler won, were easy to score as he won them decisively but they were still only 10 - 9 rounds and some of the rounds that SRL won were close, but he still won the round 10 - 9. Hagler (in the interview of this video) was wrong...you don't have to knock down a champion to win, you don't have to beat him decisively to win and you can move, make them miss, score with lots of fast shots and still win rounds, which SRL did.

On the other hand, as the champion, you should make a statement in a fight like that. Hagler definitely didn't whip him. Leonard stole the show that night. He outboxed Hagler and he owned the ring. You shouldn't be handed a victory just because you're the champion. Ray's boxing and ring generalship won him that fight. His boxing IQ is one of the best.

I think Hagler makes a point about actually winning because Leonard "shoe shined" a lot in this fight. But with that said I agree with you. The "running" narrative has got to cease. It is your job as a boxer/fighter to find a way to get a fighter off his toes by cutting off the ring and pressuring him. It wasn't running when Hagler took his time and boxed John Mugabi. Ring generalship is complete use of the ring and is NOT running... I agree with you sir. I too am sick of the "you gotta beat the champ a certain way to win". There is no such thing or rule in boxing. A win is a win.

I was around age 27 when I watched the fight and had been boxing as an amateur for 16 years, also sparring with pros like John beast Mugabe, Kirkland Laing, Nigel Benn, Michael Watson and many more. If I were Sugar Ray, I would have fought the same way. Sugar Ray was not running, he was boxing very clever, using the ring space and not walking into a Truck/Bull Hagler, who he had no chance beating in a toe to toe fight. Hagler would have eaten him alive so Sugar ray boxed very clever and stole the fight. Hagler is the greatest Middleweight of all time. Sugar ray Leonard is one of the smartest boxers of all time. @@robertaceves5248 - Perhaps you read the first sentence and disregarded the rest? Leonard fans will say he won, Hagler fans say he won. One argument has to do with what was seen as an early points lead by Ray. He also did a lot of running and many of the last second flurries in the early rounds were eye catching - some of it appeared to be smoke and mirrors. The counter argument is Hagler did enough in the second half of the fight to retain his middleweight title. For me as a fan I was indifferent. Strategy played the biggest role in the outcome. Unlike Ray, Tommy was willing to mix it up and part of that also might be because Hagler was able to get to him giving him no choice. I really believe had the fight gone one more round ( I know it’s irrelevant) Leonard would’ve gassed out. I’m ok with the decision either way. It was a close fight. Vegas loves Sugar Ray and Hagler wasn’t wrong about that.

Hagler was the victim of the biggest robbery in boxing history. Hagler threw 3x the punches and landed 3x the punches that Sugar Ray did and attacked while Sugar Ray ran away. The real question is how much money Ray's promoters paid to have their boxer be declared the winner. Anybody that watches that fight knows Hagler won, hands down. I saw it live.

Most of them are pedophiles anyway. Their opinions don’t matter. Judging is highly subjective in many ways despite the objective criteria and ten point system. I’ve watched the fight probably 15-20 times since seeing it when it happened years ago, and I still contend that it could’ve gone either way. Hagler quite frankly didn’t do himself any favors in the early rounds. By his standards he didn’t do much and that stuck out in the minds of judges as Ray built a points lead.
