In this first session we'll look at the core ideas of an approach to figure drawing which we will build upon in future sessions, starting with a front pose.
*Note: At 33:40 what I meant to say was latissimus rather than scapula!
Any questions about the process please post below and I'll try to get to them in a future video. Thanks

I've been stuck in a horrid art plateau where I'm dissatisfied with absolutely everything I make and coming back to fundamentals I was never really taught, like this, is a game changer--thank you so much for such a comprehensive fundamental study like this! This will absolutely help me with future anatomy studies to try and level up my skill in that department. I was only ever really taught how to *copy* anatomy and not how to actually *study* it and break it down like this, this is super helpful. Especially for that darn pelvic region, I'd argue I have more trouble with the shapes there than I do with hands! And this from someone who's great at the "How Many Hands Can I Hide" game!

This is so inspiring!! I'm pretty much housebound due to M.E and Fibromyalgia, and I've been desperate to make life more interesting. Over the last month or so, I've started to draw, and now have quite a few 'tools', including a desktop easel, quality pencils, paper and much more. It's really tough due to pain and fatigue, and a host of other symptoms, but I'm determined to do this, as I'm so close to throwing the towel in. I live alone with my three cats, who are so essential, they're on my medical notes, but still, I really need this, to make life worth living, no matter the obstacles I have to constantly battle through, and the days where I can do nothing else but sleep. Richard is an amazing, inspiring artist, who may just assist me in improving the quality of my life, even if it's just by a little, it may be enough to help me continue with my battle against the beast of M.E and Fibromyalgia. It's gonna be a painstakingly long process, but I so need this. From what I've seen, I feel I'm incredibly likely to sign up and become a member. Over the last few weeks, I've seen a few tutorials, and Richard's are the most inspiring. The greatest journey begins with the first step. Thank-you so much Richard for your inspiration. I so hope this has made sense, I didn't sleep last night.

I’m a 24 year old amateur artist and I feel guilty that I’m not as comfortable or understanding of this type of art even when I took some classes for it a few years ago. I normally do portraits but when it comes to figure drawing I’m very bad at it. Any person unfamiliar with art would think my figure drawings are really good but you have such a thought provoking take of how to properly do it step by step from basic shapes all the way to form of the body that I seem to never consider when doing art like this. I’ll consider your advice when I continue to practice figure drawing.

Every anatomy tutorial I've watched has never been this in-depth, this was the first time someone talked about muscles and curves not just boxes. This was awesome!

I know this was posted 2 years ago so maybe the comment won't be seen. But I've been drawing since I was a kid just for fun and I'm 29 now and I draw mostly random things, but never got to actually draw a body because, well, it's crazy intimidating. Today I completed a properly proportioned human body and your lesson was insanely informative and I appreciate it. :)

Honestly, As a medical student learning anatomy. I learned things I didn’t even know the names for before (some I did know). I never really thought of using my knowledge of anatomy in this way (I kind of have) but not this much. Super helpful!

The detail with which you choose to describe the reasons for your choices, and the over-emphasis of the gesture throughout the figure's anatomy...really, this entire video has been so helpful. Thank you, thank you.

I followed along with you, and HOLY COW, you've changed my LIFE!!! I've draw, as a hobby for decades, but all the tips and tricks never really came together in my head until you outlined it so clearly and succinctly. I proceeded to sketch three more beautiful figures from photos just using these tips, and I'm just amazed at how well it all translates. I never thought I'd say this, but I can consistently draw realistic figures!! THANK YOU!!!!

WOW, simply stunning. And the way you explain it, makes so much sense. I doodled from time to time years ago and I recently picked up drawing/sketching as a form of relax and hobby. Without any formal training I have had problem to conceptualize how to start with human drawing. Some instructions I saw were just live drawings, until I stumbled on this video and finally someone explains why. Anatomy knowledge really makes it easier to visualize it, when you talked about volume first and the lines just fell into where they supposed to be, without issues. Thank you, you have given me a great start to develop my new found hobby. Cheers!
