Dude, when you showed the vanishing points with the leg joints; it all fell into place. My jaw dropped... There are some structures on the human figure that will always remain constant. Thank you for this, its amazing and so easy to comprehend,

I learned many a decade ago how to draw, but always freehand and never with much accuracy. This is great and helps immensely with perspective and relative accuracy when constructing anatomy. Good job.And for those that seem to think that crafting art with a ruler is an issue - some of the greatest historical works of art were created with mathematical precision and calculation. The Mona Lisa tops this list.

At the beginning, I wasn’t sure how I was going to turn the stick figure from the 2nd lesson into a more 3D one, but each step was very well explained. I love how each point from the first figure had a spot in this one. Good lesson!

You are a wonderful teacher and artist. I'm brushing up on my own figure drawing skills- they didn't teach us these techniques in art school- but I wish they had! the problem with your approach to figure drawing is that you don't explain how some the shapes you draw work in perspective.for an instance, at 14:43, you draw an oval without explaining why the oval shaped isn't any wider or slimmer than the way you draw it.

The videos have been very educational for me. For a beginning anatomy drawer I was always curious as to why my drawings were always out of proportion (considering I'm good a redrawing from real studies of mostly fictional creatures yet never being able to draw a human figure). It's safe to say with all the time I have left, I'll greatly improve my drawing techniques. I thank you sir, for making my course so much more easier and much more fun.

Aaah the knockers, they can only feel better about themselves by criticising others. It's a great little tutorial that explains fundamental perspective applied to the human figure. Of course it's a stick figure because he's focusing on the perspective and needs to minimise complexity about the human figure. Well done!

Yooo, this is veryyy helpful man. I never looked at perspective drawing like the way you did. I noticed that imagining the small masses such as the torso, head, and pelvic areas as the box that contains manikin itself, helped me visualize what is hidden from view and what is not.

man this seems like a ton of work to draw a character in perspective. do you have to draw the box and stuff every time to get it right or are you able to just eye it and do it freehand once you get better at it?

Actually the proportions are off on this figure. You can't just simply divide the center line in half, and say now we have the proportionally correct top half and bottom half. You are looking down on this figure so the top half would appear longer than the bottom half. You can tell the legs are too long. You have to draw an X on the figure's right wall and an X on the wall to the left of the figure. Then connect a line through the center of those X's. You will find the center will be lower than the point he drew!! I can also tell you how to divide the center line into fourths if anyone cares. You will find the proportionally correct fourths will get smaller as they head toward the ground. Still, great idea! I'd make the correction though.

Although the method does work, I agree on your comment. As a aspiring artist myself, I do see the errors. Good eye. Overall it's a small error that can be fixed :)

Charles McArthur-Johnson If I remember the video correctly, once you accurately find the center lines on both walls, you just repeat what you did to find that center in the bottom and top half. So, draw an X on the bottom half on the far wall, and draw an x on the bottom wall near you. The centers of those X's is the true bottom 1/4. Connect those centers. DO the same on the top half. You could repeat this again and again, fine tuning the accuracy of your drawing to even smaller degrees.

Sorry if I'm late to the party, but I was wondering. If we wanted the top half of the figure to appear larger than the bottom half, because it's closer, wouldn't that require us to draw the top face of the cube larger than the bottom face, which would require doing away with the vertical lines? Wouldn't that be 3-point perspective instead of 2, since we now have a 3rd vanishing point below the figure's feet? Also, I just tried your suggestion of making the X's on the right and left faces of the cube, and connecting the intersections. I found that it intersected the vertical center line at the "exact" center of the line. As in, my vertical center line was 4 inches long (I didn't even measure it when I first made it), and the "horizontal" line connecting the right and left faces of the cube intersected the vertical at EXACTLY 2 inches. In other words, following the video's tutorial exactly as is would have yielded the same results for me as implementing your suggestion. Did I do something wrong? Accidentally correct? Was this a fluke? Thank you so much for your time and assistance! =)

I'll watch the video again and actually try it. Generally, unless it's giant skyscrapers in a city you don't have to involve 3-point perspective, but I guess if you truly wanted to be accurate you could use 3-point perspective. For instance, if you're just walking through a suburban neighborhood, you'll notice 2 point perspective is definitely a factor, but you don't really need 3-point perspective because that third vanishing point would be so high up that all of the parallel vertical lines are just basically straight and evenly vertical. I guess depending on the angle you are drawing anything, you could use 3-point perspective. I forget what method he tells you to use in this video so I will watch again and actually get out a drawing pad and let you know what I come up with.

Why the box? You can draw a line, divide it in 8 equal parts and then draw the perspective lines . Just wondering. Good tutorial. Yahnk you.

i had to unlearn the first two videos because they dealt with measurements and accuracy. he eyeball the mannequin and made of extra difficult. if he could of followed your steps even with making a line in the center it would of helped.

10 minutes in and I’m not sure what I’ve drawn. So I skipped to the end, temporarily, so I could SEE where this is going and it helps. Then I returned to 10:00 and completed. Once I returned to the 10:00 I immediately saw flaws in my sketch. If I thought beforehand that I was rotating the figure, it would’ve clicked.

If you wanted to draw a person in an already created scene. As a reference of proportional correct measurement in relation to that scene, I would search within the drawing of the already created scene a reference point of measurement, such as, a power pole, street lamp, park bench or better still... a house (if it is correctly measured). For instance, the door, take its height (the points bottom and top), and then project your box once again out to the vanishing points and continue in your fashion. I don't know if you've covered that in Your videos ahead. I found I had ti do this in some of my pictures.

+hunter brown Sorry about that. You actually don't need a ruler. You can just draw the lines freehand. I normally draw without a ruler. I just use a ruler because I want to make things look good for the video.

You say that, but I didn't have a long enough ruler myself, and ended up having to redo the 3rd video's perspective drawing because I always ended up with the foreground bottom backround corner to the cube not aligning at all with the top background corner.. Ended up having to use a big book to get the job done..

It seems to me that the idea behind this entire series is to get the would-be artist off and running. Sure if you want to get into details there are many scholarly volumes on all the subjects covered here, and yes if you want to hassle your head over a matter of mm.s you can surely do so. But if you want a quick and concise lesson there's none better than this.

Very useful and well presented. On the second tutorial you included drawings along with the transcript where you indicate the "head" positions, like where nipples and navel go. A similar drawing for the body in perspective tutorial would be excellent. It's a bit more complicated so it's easier to look at a drawing rather than watch the video. Thank a lot.

After about 6:30 . i gave up. you didn't tell me why should i draw peanut shape and ark some ting. i am a very novice.i can't imagine without instruct. you can draw in your assuming way. but i can't understand without how and why.

How bout thinking the lines in your head ? Just hallucinate the lines, you can even make a movement with your hand towards the vanishing point from your, for example hip-joint, and youll easily find the point youre looking for. I think you should be able to hallucinate a straight line.

i don't get it , why do you devide in equal halves if there is foreshortening ? ? wouldnt the lower part be distorded slighly ?

You should introduce the first tutorials about the proper pencil to use. I have been using a regular 12 pencil but notice you are using the mechanical pencil. It seems important that you are using that, perhaps you can point that out. If it works better with mechanical pencils, newbies won't know better.

Very good explanation, but i would like to draw this figure without these help-lines. I like to do it by heart. Well i think its just a question of practizing like hell or can you tell me more how to sketch without any help-lines? greetings from germany buddy

I keep having trouble with the box, and aligning the to X's to make the line that holds the figure. And then when I want to draw in the head and chest it dosent fit inside the box...Im going to try again.
