@@renzogasch9759 I agree....She pulled off a triple jump where ,the same jump Nancy doubled it. Then she added another triple at the end where it wasn't planned. That took guts. At only 16, she was brilliant....and humble too. The sneer Nancy gave her at the podium was very telling of Nancy's character.

There is no greater of example girl power than Oksana baouil. In sports she is the mt. Everest of examples. She grew up poor in Ukraine, Father left when she was a toddler. All her grandparents died when she was young. Lost her mother when she was 13. Injured inbetween sp and lp. Yet still she won gold. I have the greatest respect and inspiration for what she overcame and accomplished.

Oksanas story is heartbreaking, thankfully she seems to have had decent coaches who cared and wanted to help her. Seriously, there is no way Oksana's program was technically stronger! No triple combinations, no spin combinations and all her jumps were straight entry jumps... meaning no difficult set up into the jumps. She was a very beautiful skater but to say she was technically superior in this competition is just not reality. Kerrigan had two jump combinations (one being a triple-triple), her triple lutz was 3 min into the program (these days would be given bonus points) and she had a spiral into her triple loop. All these carry her into a stronger category compared to Oksana's program.

She screwed up more than once. Nancy was near perfect and deserved the gold. She had more triple jumps followed by double jumps and was flawless. She shortened one triple to a double, but made a clean landing. She was perfect after that. Oksana Baiul did not skate as difficult a program than Nancy Kerrigan. She was cheated out of the gold medal by 5 Communist judge thugs who did what Tonya's thugs could not do. They would cheat their grandmas out of their pensions. If only they did not have a majority, Nancy Kerrigan wins the gold. Something that simple seems so difficult for people to understand. The NFL and these 5 judges are the biggest disgraces in the world of sports.

yeah exactly, you sound so cynical about how nothing we see on tv is real but isn't that what most of the stories western world, esp America, are communicated to the public ? I don't think it is all bad thing, but the confusion that makes people get into certain things such as sports, military service...etc, because of the generated drama can be troublesome.

damien park I don't mean to say nothing on tv is real, I'm just saying, at least in this figure skating video, they overdo it a little. It gives people who don't know the skating world that well the idea that figure skaters are "vicious" and "will do anything to win" and such. While it's undeniable that there are skaters that are like that, take tonya harding, there are ordinary people like that too, they just go for different things. They've done a lot of publicity on Ashley on the faces she's made even though she said that she was sorry and didn't mean it, it caused a lot of people to hate on her.

Such a nervous breakdown can only come from the release of taking the destiny into one's own hand and succeed. The aftermath shows she felt right about the need to add tripple toe loop to be able to win. It is an odd thing in this sport to take such responsibility. "Figure skate athlets shall not think but do as told". Thus, she won by body and brain.

Lillehammer was the greatest show on ice. Tonya vs. Nancy was only the tool GOD used to set the world attention on women's figure skating. Then the focus became Oksana Baiul and her magical skating prowess, her story and her indomitable spirit. Henie is the greatest because of the records she set and all the fame she brought to the sport and the Olympic movement. Her contribution will never be duplicated. Baiul ranks second for making skating relevant with her competitive daring & beautiful performances at those games. Her contribution was uncommon skating prowess & courage. It was also, the beauty & expressiveness of her skating along with; the many sacrifices she made and her iron will. The rest of the snowflakes you can keep. The others bore me. Nancy damaged her brand when she fumed, pouted and showed herself to be ungracious and full of arrogance. Declaring herself "the real gold medalist" and "flawless." She scornfully declared Oksana as subpar during press interviews. She insulted Oksana sneered her on the podium. Stormed from the games in a fury speaking with an acid tongue. Nancy and her team laughed when learning of Oksana's accident. That is trashy not classy Oksana had real sportsmanship and class. Despite all that she endured and would later endure she NEVER cut down her competitors---not even Nancy who deserved it. Baiul first class and outclassed them all. She was interesting and exciting. There has been none like her since. There never will be. Disappointed that the sport refused to reinstate her. She was the skater of the ages IMO. Nancy's behavior served as proof she would not be able to handle the demands of representing the sport as the gold medal champion. No tact, no class, no grace & just mean spirited.

It’s about who deserves to win based on the athletic achievements of the athlete, not facial expressions. Jan Hoffman conveniently overlooked the actual technical requirements of the free program And awarded by all incorrectly. In fact several judges incorrectly graded her performance she should not of finished any higher than forth in the free skate and maybe received a bronze medal overall, there were several technical requirements that she did not meet. I don’t care how pretty you think her skating was it’s still a sport in at the end of the day until they added technical callers as part of the judging panel’s after 2002, many times people who didn’t meet the technical requirements of the program still were awarded incorrectly.

I remember seeing a show on tv that was about the junior skaters getting ready to move up. The minute I saw Oksana skate I knew she was going to get the Gold medal in the Olympics. I had never seen anyone skate with that much raw talent, perfection, and speed. It was amazing. From that moment on I kept my eye on her as much as possible. The whole thing with Nancy and ’what's her name’ was sad and vicious. The shock being Nancy was not her only competition, even. So, it was useless and senseless all the way around. It was never going to help her get anywhere. Oksana deserved that good medal. I just wished she would have stayed on skating after that. But, she was the type that once she got to the top it was time to move on to something else. That's her choice to make but, I was saddened by it. I pray her life is doing well today here in March 22, 2020 and continues to do well. Beautiful girl inside and out. Tyfs! P.S. I'm an American who is capable of being honest and admitting when someone else is better and deserves the win more than even our own. A lot of Americans are like this.

@@hydrolito Nancy was upset naturally after being cheated out of the gold medal. So she made a remark. You probably would have said much worse under those circumstances. Oh I forgot, you are so much of a better person than Nancy Kerrigan, so you would have been so much better than that. Time and again that one remark is blown completely out of proportion. The same camera shows Nancy hugging and congratulating Oksana. She knew like most people that she outskated Oksana and her two foot landings, except this bunch that gathers around these videos like sharks, ready to go on a feeding frenzy and you do. Make no mistake about it, it was the technical column they used to beat her out of the gold. The Czech judge gave Oksana a 5.9 in technical merit. That's insane. They deliberately cheated Nancy Kerrigan out of the gold medal. She did not skate anywhere good enough for a 5.9. Nancy never got a 5.9 even though she skated a much more difficult program and almost perfect. Nancy got the same marks in artistic impression, six 5.9s and three 5.8s.If there were one more judge from a Western country instead of the very recently former Communist countries and the one still communist, Nancy would have rightfully won it and there would have been absolutely no controversy whatsoever and nobody here would be saying all of these things that are absolutely false about her. That would have aggravated most of you because you always have to be snotty and look down at someone with your noses stuck up in the air. Everything said on these videos about Nancy is applicable you and your kind. You are all vicious snobs, very haughty and vain. Pat yourself on the back. You like yourselves too much. Gossipy too.

@MsJubjubbird
@MsJubjubbird 8 жыл бұрын
ashli674 Well I can see why they changed it. Because when you add a upper limit to the scores there's a ceiling. However, the sport continues to get more difficult due to the advances in technology and scientific knowledge. Therefore the scoring becomes incompatible. So what was a 6 20 years ago, when routines maybe had two triples maximum, is no longer a 6 now, where you have 5-7 triples, if you compare the difficulty of the routines. The had the same issue in gymnastics, which is why they got rid of the 10 system. A gymnast scoring a 9.8 with a great routine in 2000 would then do a harder routine two years alter and get a 9.5 because they'd had to accommodate for the development of new skills. However, I don't like the new system in either sport because it takes away form the fundamentals. There has to be a happy medium.

Katherine Egge tonya transformed the sport. She did more for the sport than any other skater I know. She is literally the reason why people preform triples today.

The whole word was watching due to the Tonya /Nancy scandal. Tonya was the most talented skater in the world and was landing amazing triple axels in the warm up, but imploded on the ice that night. Nancy had the skate life a lifetime, but it wasn't memorable and will be known more for her attitude toward Okasana Baiul than for any skating she did. The best performance of the night went to Baiul, yet the most memorable went to Katarina Witt. Even though she was well past her prime and her skating lacked the technical elements of the top skaters....her artistry was the best of the evening.

Nancy had technical skill, but only one facial expresson, the vacant beauty queen look with good teeth. Oksana’s technique was in the service of artistic expression. She combined sport and art.

I remember watching this live on tv with my family. My mom cheered when Oksana finished her performance and saying she was phenomenal. Even though we're Portuguese and having no ties with Ukraine, we all wanted her to win. The focus of course was on Nancy/Tonya controversy, I remember watching Tonya performance, the shoelace debacle, her crying and I was thinking "that is what you get for being mean towards Nancy".

Haha I was a little girl during this time, and my adoptive mother would always curl my bangs like this for school 😂
