I just used my BTR5 as a ModMic and it worked great. I connected the BTR over Bluetooth to the PC while my headphones were connected normally to the PC (AMP-DAC) --> worked great and the funny thing is, for the same price as the wireless modmic you have a great DAC and a Modmic :-)

Best review I've seen on this BTR 5e answers all of the comments great reviewer I really enjoyed your review. Not sure if you're familiar with the lgv40 it has the built-in quad DAC Africa's quite a knife job of plugging in headphones to the phone by far the best DAC amp combo in a smartphone. Do you think the BTR 5 fiio is an upgrade over the lgv40?. I agree with you you lose sound quality over Bluetooth it is gotten much better but it is still not the same as wired. The problem with wiring the btr5 to your phone is now when you go outside you got a dongle cable and you get a cable running into the br5 it's kind of a hassle if you're going to do it at home it's okay but for outside use doesn't seem very practical. So if I run a cable from my phone into the btr5 the btr5 is still acting as a DAC and an amp correct?. Thank you for your time and keep up the good reviews.

Thank you for your kind words!! When connecting BTR 5 via a cable, you are using it as a USB DAC/AMP, I agree it is not very practical, but the sonic quality makes it worth it! So far, BTR5 beats every phone I tested it against. It surely beats the V20 and V30 when I ested, but I didn't have a chance to test V40 yet.

I'm glad you gave the downsides as well. I bought it bc everybody said "it sounds just like wired". When I got it, I tried my best to believe that was true but ultimately I had to go with what I heard over what a lot of these "professional reviewers/ audiophiles" said... It absolutely does not sound like a wired connection. At all. I'm so confused as to how someone could think it does. Also, the EQ settings do not work when in LDAC or wired mode... so, for my uses, it doesnt have EQ at all. Insane power on 2.5mm balanced. Out of all the bt5.0 devices Ive tried, it is the best by a fair bit. Idk why I wrote so much, but I enjoyed the video!

I think these gadgets really over deliver. I've spent a lot on tech this year and this device feels like the best value for money by far. I'm no audiophile, I have good hearing but I think someone would have to point out to me any defects in the music that come from bluetooth. I listen to a lot of modern classical and electronic ambient and experimental type music nearly always through headphones from a laptop, I'm enjoying it just the same but more often because of the size of this device and it's portability. You can have a great music experience for little money right now. I was using an old iPod glued to a portable amp/DAC for a while but I have a new Sony Xperia phone now which has LDAC, I was delighted to see this BTR5 also uses LDAC. It easily drives my AKG K550 and Final Audio IEMs. Great review as always.

@@christiandshatto7765 No Worries, I was curious to understand your situation better! For something with TOSLINK / SPDIF Output, it is hard to say, most BT receivers don't have that, because the BT codec looses some detail, and outputting digital signal means you'd be outputting something that's less than the original. There are smartphones that you could connect to a FiiO DAP, which can act as a BT receiver, a mini one, that has spdif output, and it may work, but I have to check which ones have this feature (?)

Hiii, the sound of BTR5 will have much more detail, dynamics and punch than BTR3K. Also BTR3K is really smooth in comparison, so the treble will be much leaner and laid back with BTR3K. BTR5 is warm-ish but fairly neutral, should be a better choice for most folks :)

WOAH, really good info in there, did not know that yet, I think I always set everything to the highest quality in smartphones, out of habit.
@d0nj03
@d0nj03 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, in order to squeeze out all of what LDAC can do you should set it to max bitrate, 16-bit/44.1 kHz (since "hi-res" formats are BS anyway and just consume storage/bandwidth for extra information that can't really be heard by human ears). At 909 kbps it's still not enough for lossless transmission of CD-res music but it's the closest any BT codec has got so far, and I think it's good enough to fool the vast majority of people. People keep talking about what is lost when transmitting music through BT, but really today's BT codecs are not that bad. Most of the problems when listening through BT are from the DAC/amp that takes the music from the BT receiver to the headphones or speakers, and that's where these excellent recent implementations like the BTR3/3k/5, ES100 mk1/mk2, Shanling UP2/UP4 come in and show that amazing results were already possible if you just used a good enough DAC/amp. It's gotten to the point where plugging your headphones into a BTR3 can give you audibly better sound even through AAC or aptX transmission than if you plugged the headphones directly into your phone and listened to them wired - the BT transmission does not degrade the quality as much as the bad audio chipset in most smartphones.

Maybe I'll get lucky and get a ( or some, the more the merrier ) comment(s) here...So, I just purchased a new cell phone. I typically connect to my car audio via BT, and yes, both phone and stereo are 5.0 capable. I mostly use Tidal HiFi, occasionally I'll stream a KZfaq video. While I have no complaints about the sound quality, I am very disappointed in the volume capability. I literally max my cell AND tune stereo volume up to 24 of 35 just to begin to override road noise. Will this help? Or is there another device available that I should consider? Also, since this connects to phone via BT, I'm assuming I'd use the 3.5mm jack from this to aux input on my stereo? Thanks for your time if you do choose to reply.... :)
@AudiophileHeaven
@AudiophileHeaven 3 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure , bit BTR5 may help Bit it depends a lot on whether your car stereo can amplify the sound more I would suggest checking Android settings on phone, some phones have a limit on the volume that you need to bypass to use them at max ability

I've been doing some digging. Had to enable DEV Permissions on my cell. In doing such, I found a feature ( Disable Absolute Volume ) which was enabled. I disabled that. I haven't gotten back into my car yet but will try to remember to report back once I do. I'm also going to look and see what BT Codec is on. I know that my car stereo is QualComm AptX Capable, so I want to confirm it's using that. So, hopefully I'm on the right track... :)

Great review, I have a question about the comment you made about losing some detail over bluetooth. Are you referring to the detail loss when using bluetooth headphones paired to the BTR5, or are you also saying that even when the BTR5 is receiving bluetooth music from an audio source (Phone) and transferring over connected 3.5mm headphone there is some loss in fidelity?
@AudiophileHeaven
@AudiophileHeaven 4 жыл бұрын
The loss is as it follows: BTR 5 sounds better if you are using it connected by the cable, with your smartphone, or with your PC, than when having it connected via Bluetooth. It may not be very obvious from the features, but BTR5 works as a USB DAC as well, and it sounds the best when connected like that.

And are these two any better than an apple dongle out of a phone? I am only asking for IEMs, no headphone. Thank you in advance

Hiii, this is much better than an apple dongle. Hip Dac is also better than the apple thingy. Both have much better driving power, better overall detail and clarity, better punch and better dynamics than the apple one. Hip Dac is warmer, sounds more forward than the BTR5, where BTR5 is more balanced, natural.

+Audiophile Heaven What would you say is the best portable dac for metal? Dragonfly, Ear studio, Qudelix, etc or this one? i use a note 20 ultra and note 10+ and am fed up with the low audio issue as i listen to metal especially to motivate me to clean, work out etc and its just not cutting it.. i would like it to go to where it starts hurting, then lowering the volume 1 or 2 levels but i believe the note phones are basically 3-5 too low. Seems this is the best one, but since others have pointed out its hype, it makes it a little more challenging to see who's right prior to acquiring one. Sinceyou seem more honest/balanced than other reviewers, what do you think for a bass head that uses Skullcandy Crusher ANCs, Skullcandy Crusher 360s, ATH-M50s (want to pick up the m50xs at some point), Jaybird X4s, and V-Moda Crossfade 2s?

Hi there, Since I had all of the ones you mention, I would say that I'd still go for BTR5, it is hyped, but overall it still is the better. I made a video on the Quedelix which will go live soon, but the thing is the Quedelix is cheaper, it also is slightly less interesting, it is a minor compromise DAC / AMP compared to the BTR5.

Hi there, and thank you for your kind words! If you're going portably with BTR5, then go with the 32 OHM version. The 80 OHM version is still possible to drive from BTR5, it has more than enough power, but it may be a bit harder down the line, if you will want to pair the headphones with other sources in the future. The differences between 32 OHM and 80 OHM are minimal in driving power, but the sound is a bit cleaner on the 80 OHM version in general, (less background noise / hiss) also a bit more stable with sources that have a high output impedance.

The problem is that the Bluetooth from my phone isn't that good, and so when connected on the Klipsch the quality isn't great. Does buying an Bluetooth external DAC, such as this one, help in this situation ? The idea would to connect the phone to it via bluetooth and then use a jack cable to connect to the Klipsch. Many thanks !

Your usage scenario is actually complicated XD I am not sure what to say, it should help, as long as you use the IEMs from the 3.5mm output of BTR5 . Bu since I never heard the IEMs themselves, it is hard to tell if the IEMs themselves aren't bad, and then BTR5 wouldn't help much, and it would be more worthwhile to invest in a IEM.

@@AudiophileHeaven you are right, i would describe these fiio players as you described them. Had m9, m11, also btr 5 using long time and all of these are good at their price but fur busy people, not so big audiophiles i think btr5 is the best choice as it has good level of sound quality is cheap and small and lets you use your smartphone, not such big brick as m11. I sold m9 and m11 because of btr5 and my way of using and listening but agree that m11 has higher level sound. But also not so "fun". So for people who are looking for more fun listening - btr5 is even better choice but who are looking for maximum resolution and more neutral, controled sound and ready to spent much more - then m11 is right choice. Yes. Should be better. I only heard the DFR fugitively, but BTR5 should be more dynamic, more punchy and more vivid in general

I have both. DFR sounds harsh by comparison. Imaging is better on the BTR5 too (when wired). BTR5 is pretty magic. Might gift my DFR to someone. It’s nice when technology genuinely gets better. My only disappointment is my iPhone only does AAC and that sounds objectively worse than AptX from my Mac. (No fault of the BTR5)

Hey gavin, Thank for the review. Just wanted to know is it possible to connect this to iphone via usb and when it is connected using usb can we change the custom eq and make all the adjustments as they are there on the app or is it only possible to make those changes only while connected via bluetooth.
@AudiophileHeaven
@AudiophileHeaven 4 жыл бұрын
Hey there, My name is George. Good question. Usually, when it comes to the USB DAC abilities of BTR, you can use the EQ from your music app (?) I don't have an iPhone to test how it reacts to it (?)
@siddharthsharma7773
@siddharthsharma7773 4 жыл бұрын
Audiophile Heaven Okay, thanks for your reply. What effect does the EQ make when it is connected to your android phone? And i would agree with you in using it in wire mode for getting the best possible sound that is why i want to know. Being an iphone user, i unfortunately do not have the liberty of custom EQ.
@AudiophileHeaven
@AudiophileHeaven 4 жыл бұрын
@@siddharthsharma7773 Ah, I understand... The EQ is actually a good thing, but on Android it works only through the app, not through the BTR itself. Depends on which EQ profile you use and how you configure it. I usually only EQ when necessarry, most headphones and IEMs tend to sound good out of it so they don't really need EQ.
@siddharthsharma7773
@siddharthsharma7773 4 жыл бұрын
Audiophile Heaven Thanks George. got it. But what about custom EQ, does it have any profound effect on the music when you change it from the app. My sole purpose of taking this is to have more volume and high res sound through DAC along with sound customisation which is possible through the app. Do you thing this device fits that role?

Did someone have issue with charge status while it's charging with btr5 in 1.0.6 firmware? because when i charge the btr5, the charge indicator is full in minutes, sometimes i need unplug many times to correct the battery level charge, the charge is always through usb port from my pc i try charge in other pc and the result is the same, the usb ports are 2.0 with the btr5 turned off and charge option is on (obviously) in the btr5. I tried factory reset and reinstall the fw 1.0.6, or maybe it's an software bug. i dont charge the btr5 more than an hour and half, and when i use the usb dac mode i always turn off the charge option.

Interesting, I also noticed mine charged really quickly. Usually, when this happens, you're supposed to use it until it discharges completely, then charge completely and so on, to recalibrate the battery sensor. This is not recommended for the batteries, but if the sensors go crazy, it may solve the issues

I disagree. Ldac 990kbps is just as good as wired. Maybe your phone catches it 660kbps due to low signal strength. Go to developer settings and enable 'best quality' then compare. At 990kbps ldac can transmit upto 24bit 96khz without loss in signal quality.
@AudiophileHeaven
@AudiophileHeaven 4 жыл бұрын
Interesting take, I know it should be close, but it still somehow has more dynamics and punch over wire. I usually leave LDAC best settings enabled in the phone, might be that my phone auto switches to lower rates because it's not good enough, since it is a pretty entry-midrange phone

The BTR5 can't play any complex music without becoming pixelated. Is this because the DSD technology is not fast enough yet? It seriously can't keep up in either wired or unwired mode with bands like Autechre, particularly with lots of mid bass shifts and rapid yet gradual panning. Reviewers that like this amplifier says a lot about their musical taste.
@AudiophileHeaven

I have the feeling that the limitation is considerably more from the source, like your headphones / IEMs if it doesn't work well even on cable. I'm saying this because if connecting a flagship IEM to BTR5, it totally can work with complex music (?)
