in the end I decided to get this M23, I was evaluating the M15S too with the current discounts (just a bit pricier than this) but I preferred to choose the M23 for the dual chip, the more recent features and apparently the less technical dry sound... let's see, when I get it I'll be able to say it. Thanks for the review! Always consdering you as one of the most reliable and serious reviewers out there :)

long time no see m8 hope your stil safe in your country. Last time i watch vid of you was for fiio m15 now gor m23 time. M15 stil sound super and last my ful 12 hours shift but hate use android 6 because of that many app like tidal dont work that good any more. Now i order m23 + case hope i get to tomorrow and wil use with my me700 who i use gor 5yr now. Edit see on head fi forum m23 wil get android 12 later in year ❤ Gr from the netherlands.

Hi Mr PortaFi. I’ve been watching your videos for years now and probably the president of your fan club from Sri Lanka. I ordered a R4 to upgrade from my FiiO M7 and hoping i made the right choice. Before you ask, I prefer somewhat neutral to warm sound so would really appreciate your feedback 😊

in terms of sound M23 is better, but I don't think it makes sense to upgrade, especially if you like your R6-3

Most likely I won't. It's hard to get it here, and TBH I don't see usecases for it. In my plans is iFi new Zen DAC 3, as it's a good value desktop device, and I''d like to try their new GoBar with DSP

I have the m11s which sounds awesome with tidal does the m23 sound the same or is the m23 blowing it away as far as sound goes

I have the ibasso 260 and i am very impressed i dont think theres another dap under $1k that can compete, it sounds out of this world

Не по теме, но подскажите пожалуйста, есть ли какие-нибудь сервисы, сайты, что угодно, где можно скачивать музыку в приемлимом качестве? Раньше пользовался китайской приложухой, там можно было скачивать треки в любом формате (flac и т.д.). Но потом все прикрыли, а я даже и не осознавал насколько это было удобно(( Сейчас создал тг канал, хотел сделать там сборник любимых треков и вот сижу думаю где их скачивать то) Спасибо

Actually, if you like the sound of your M11 Plus ESS, stay with it. M23 is better, but difference isn't huge

Gr8 review!! I was excited to see a new Fiio model. I have to say, for me personally, I'm disappointed. I think the body design is holding the functionality of the player back. Specifically, I' now prefer better battery performance. A real 14hrs of music playback at this price bracket and above. Fiio claim 10.5SE and 9BAL, and once the player is a year old that will be lower too.

Unfortunately, current electronics development is limited by the batteries. To fit a bigger battery, one need to increase thickness of the device, and it'll make it totally pocket-unfriendly…

@@PortaFi I see your point - but of course Lotoo P6000 is a smaller lighter player, with a smaller battery running 15 hours. I know the specs are not the same, so P6000 is not an apples to apples comparison but you see my point. Probably Fiio don't have the technical prowess that Lotoo has, to tune everything to work more efficiently within one package. My guess is - Android optimization would help. I guess Fiio doesn't have the R&D budget. It just seems odd to go backwards from the M11 Plus. Great review regardless!! :)

It's like comparing bike and auto. Of course auto will consume more fuel as it's heavier (in average). Same here, M23 uses all-purpose Snaprdragon chipset that requires more power, pretty "hungry" AK4499EX DAC and more powerful amplifier. All that components consume more power. If you want a more long-lasting devices, there are players built without Android and using ESS all-in-one chips. They will offer a longer work time

So once I opened up and did the software update I went to use it and it was extremely laggy! I have had a few of their DAP’s in the past, M11, M11 Plus, M17, M11s etc… and all of them were not as laggy as this device. Finally after downloading some music the first track when I hit play started about 5-10 seconds into the song then stopped half way through. I played the next song and it was fine. Then the next song started fine then stopped, then started then completely stopped. I checked online and seen some reviewers said this was a minor thing and not to worrying. Not to worrying? It’s unusable! I’m sure they will have an update to fix it at some point but that’s just plain horrible quality control. I also had volume issues where the higher I put the volume at times it the volume level got lower the higher I turned it up. Anyways this is definitely getting returned! Fiio has been going downhill lately ever since the high pitched M11S. Not sure what they are doing over there but it isn’t value for your money anymore.

I'm looking to buy the fiio m23 and I really don't want to spend the extra money on the m23 if the differences is not much in terms of music quality compared to a smartphone. My question is how do you compared a dap to a smartphone just for music? I never had the opportunity to listen to a dap before so I'm really curious about the differences. Thank you.

You know, I'm not a "true audiophile", so I won't tell you that DAP is definitely much better than smartphone. It is true, but not everyone needs this sound quality improvement. So I really recommend you to try some DAP with good IEMs before buying. It's a hobby, and it can be not one's cup of tea. Modern TWS earphones are great, and can be more than enough for many people. I'm not saying that "audiophilia" is for elites with golden ears, quite the contrary, lot of people can find it not worth money. But at the same time, quite possible that you'll enjoy rediscovering your music :)
