In this video, I discuss the dreaded filament tangles. How they occur and how to fix when they do. Also what you can do to prevent them.
This video is part of my ongoing series to help diagnose & fix a range of 3D printing issues to help my 3DTomorrow Filament customers get the best results from their filament. Of course, if you use another filament brand, this video should still be very helpful for you.
I hope you enjoy the video! Smash that like button.
As always, feel free to share your own approaches and comments down below since it may help other people.

I had a tangle in the middle of a 1kg roll that caused a print to fail 20 hours into a 36 hour print. I was so mad I almost threw my entire 3d printer into the garage.

Brilliant. Thank you, just hit my first tangle - immediately thought I had a badly wound roll from the manufacturer. Now I know it was my poor house keeping.

Oh this is just wonderful! I’m preparing to do a video on the same topic this week too! It's such an important thing that can save prints from failure. There is also a lot of misconception that tangles are introduced during the manufacturing process due to not understanding how a tangle can be introduced and then shifted down the line, causing blame to be incorrectly placed. If I could like this video three times, I would! I love how we were thinking the same thing. I'd say “great filament-focused minds think alike” but that just sounds silly, heh. Love the video!

So glad you liked it! Truth be told, it's been on the to-do list for a while, but I've kept putting it off as can be a sore subject if you've just had a print failure... I think that's part of where the misconception comes from, very easy to blame when you're angry and your print has just failed. But yes, as you say, the fact a print can start okay and then tangle some way down the line definitely adds to the confusion. From one filament fanatic to another, I look forward to your video on the topic:D

Was babysitting a print for a few hours because the filament kept binding up. I accidentally dropped this roll when I hadn't secured it yet a few months back. Finally decided to look for a video and this was super helpful. I cut about 8 feet to continue feeding while I got the tangle out, rewound and then hung it back in place. I was able to snip off the 6 feet still feeding and piggyback the end right behind. Hopefully it still looks good in the morning.

Thank u for this video.. sadly, I JUST experienced a VERY bad “tangle” .. went to check the print and it showed it was 1.2 way done….but sadly, NOT! It was tangled so bad it was sticking together? I did manage to get the tangle out and re wind (even did it correctly- did it before I found this video) i was searching to see y it happened .. thank u for the explanation..glad to see i fixed it correctly

just caught a tangle when there was about 20% of the roll left. I've been printing with the same roll from when i unpacked it, so never pulled the filament out the extruder. Don't see how this can be my fault... It's even a spool that looks nicely rolled up
@CallumColes
@CallumColes Жыл бұрын
Would be unusual for a tangle to propagate that far back into the spool for sure... Was it definitely a tangle and not two strands of filament joined together or wedged between the neighbouring strands?

Some of the .5 kg rolls do that. Or they're really tight near the end and break if too fast.

yeah that’s why I’m here. Happened 3-4 times on my last roll from Bambu. New roll, never left the end loose. I think I’d rather have my print pause than unroll the whole roll to check it and re-roll it. Lame. seems to happen mostly with Matte filament. The matte surface seems to have enough friction to enable the auto tangle feature.

I've been having this issue with the AMS lite for Bambu Lab A1 for hours. It was a brand new roll which I dried first, and I've done all this and still keeps happening. It's driving me nuts. I suspect it might have something to do with filament retraction or something from the AMS. I'm not sure.

Iv been dealing with a brand new spool, it tangled on every print. Also the filament was stringy so it was either a bad batch or improperly stored by the manufacturer. I respooled it and that helped but I shouldn’t have to do that

i just got a 3d printer, didnt know about filament tangles. The filament i got didn't even come in a spool. got crazy tangled, currently just relying on a small amount of wire being loosely hung on the handle. Gonna see if i can improvise some sort of spool.
@CallumColes
@CallumColes Жыл бұрын
I have unboxed some 3D printers where there is a coil of filament without a spool, not really sure what they are thinking as it is a bit of a recipe for disaster for a new user! If you have purchased filament seperately from the printer and it did not come on a spool, then it is likely this is a refill designed to be used with a reusable spool e.g. MasterSpool. There are lots of designs on Thingiverse that can be downloaded and printed :)

I may understand the explanation (poor storage conditions) if it just did not happen to me with a filament I just bought and unpacked today. I don’t see the responsibility of the operator in that case and more importantly how to handle it ?

Always worth checking just in case, whenever you get a new roll, if it looks suspect always try to pull a few loops off the side of the spool to make sure it comes off freely and there are no tangles.
@CGreciful
@CGreciful 2 ай бұрын
How about when print stops, tug the line, yes it’s stuck, go to check the spool, no tangle! These are the situations driving me crazy. Only happens with filament like matte that has a lot of surface friction…. likely a tension knot that pops out as soon as you touch the roll.

I think mine somehow got tangle from the factory because I just got a tangle 23 hours into a print and I’ve also used the holes to store the end
@CallumColes
@CallumColes Жыл бұрын
It is unlikely unless the filament arrived looking like a birds nest, tangles can often show up later in the print as the extrusion process slowly pulls the tangle tighter and tighter like a knot until it can no longer move

Do people actually spend hundreds of dollars on 3D printers and store their filament just loosely?! That just seems crazy to me. I guess this is good advice for those people. Or if you get super cheap filament from a poor source?? My filaments have always been perfectly tight and well-formed for years. Good video (audio clipping was bad though), thanks :)
@CallumColes
@CallumColes Жыл бұрын
Pretty much anything you can think of, somewhere someone will be doing it lol. In my opinion though, probably the most common cause of tangles would be when people are loading/unloading filament. I feel it's less obvious that the filament still needs to be kept in tension throughout this process.

27 hours into a 33 hour print and this is what cause it to fail... i the had to unspool almost 3/4 of what was left on the roll to get rid of the kink. Lesson learned, only buy name brand filament. - that cheap shit is cheap for a reason!

@CallumColes
@CallumColes 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment! It's very unlikely for a product to turn up with tangles, the main cause would be if the filament had come loose from the holders during transport. Because the chances of a product turning up with tangles is low, if you're finding that you have frequent filament tangles, then it's definitely worth evaluating your setup. Look for excess slack in your setup. Add friction to the spool holder if necessary. Always store filament properly secured in the guide holes.

This is also incorrect and this guy doesn't know how knots work, he is blaming operator error, not poor design.

It is operator error… If you repeatedly have filament tangles then the sooner you accept it, the sooner you’ll be on your way to preventing them🙌🏼
