The big difference between the US and the Netherlands is that there are plenty of viable alternatives to driving. This is why these politicians struggle to find good arguments against a mileage tax

This. The U.S is car centric you have to have a car to get pretty much anywhere so I don't think it will work for the U.S. We have enough options.

Spreek voor jezelf! 't is dat ik studenten-OV heb en nog geen tijd heb gehad om een rijbewijs te halen, want ik ben soms meer dan drie keer zo lang onderweg, inclusief naar de uni, en als je het moet betalen kost een uurtje trein je al gouw twee tientjes. De auto is meestal goedkoper en sneller als je buiten de randstad reist en daar woon ik, dus dat is nogal vaak.

@@Treinbouwer Ik ben geboren en getogen in een gat in drenthe en heb daar tot mijn 25e gewoond. Dat hoef je mij niet uit te leggen, maar wetsvoorstellen voor rekening rijden duiden dan ook met name op de spits bij de grote knooppunten in de randstad. En dus niet je A28/N34/A7 richting stad.

@@Treinbouwer Als jij je wegenbelasting, overige investeringen vanuit de overheid, aankoopkosten en onderhoudskosten een keer gaat omrekenen zul je zien dat de auto al een stuk duurder wordt. Daar komt nog bovenop dat je in de trein, in tegenstelling tot de auto, ook nog andere dingen kunt doen terwijl je onderweg bent en je bij het regelmatig gebruik ook nog abbonementen kunt nemen die de kosten nog verder drukken, vooral bij routes die je regelmatig neemt zoals die naar je werk. Verder neemt de auto vergeleken met andere vormen van vervoer ongekend veel ruimte in beslag, die er vooral in dichter bevolkte gebieden vaak helemaal niet is, zie de woningmarkt, en hoewel dat moeilijk in exacte bedragen valt aan te duiden, lopen we daar wel degelijk met zijn alle (belasting)centen mis. Tuurlijk zullen er situaties zijn waarin de auto altijd de strijd zal winnen, vooral in dunner bevolkte gebieden zoals het Drente waar @j3dotgg het al over had. Maar dit alles staat nog even los van de discussie rondom het vroempoen. Het argument voor het vroempoen is vooral dat het efficientere keuzes aanmoedigt waardoor we niet onze gehele infrastructuur hoeven aan te passen op de 10 uurtjes spits per week om die miljardeninvesteringen er de overige 158 uur voor Jan lul bij te laten liggen. Kortom, als het voor iemand niet noodzakelijk is om in de spits op pad te gaan, moeten we met zijn alle niet willen dat ie dat wel gaat doen.

As a dutchie i think the reason why they don't want 'vroempoen' is quite simple. Over 90% of all traffic jams are in the 'randstad' area. Where also most of the big politicians are. And guess who doesn't want to pay for the troubles they cause themselves? ;)

That’s bollocks because most of those politicians don’t live in the Randstad area. They are driven by a state owned car with a state paid driver from as far as Friesland and the south of Limburg to the ministries and parliament in The Hague. They don’t care about the costs, we all are paying for them through OUR taxes …

@@robl6052 That's not true for a lot of people. They do have a choice. I even know a lot of people living in the the Hague area who can get free public transport through their employer, but still prefer to drive their own car.

I think that the reason for no extra taxes for driving is the fact that in most cases, it comes at the expense of the employers, the employers must reimburse these additional travel costs to their employees. And the ruling parties know their voters won't like that.

bit of context on the Maarten vd Weijden joke at 2:10 - Maarten is a professional Dutch long distance swimmer who survived leukemia and raises money for research. He attempted to swim the 11city tour (~200km traditional skating event in Friesland), but had to give up quite early. He did manage to complete the course as a triathlon later. Overall absolute legend

He actually went to my school the day after he finished the triathlon and he talked all about it it was really cool to hear how he did it and hear his story about how he trained for the Olympics which he won a couple of years ago for swimming an absolute legend indeed

The toucan was a puppet called Sir Geoffrey who was “played” by a puppeteer called Aad Peters. As Sir Geoffrey he interviewed several people in the nineties. It was easier for him to ask cheeky questions with a puppet as a kind of shield. He had a few other characters like a bull called Bulletje in the Mini Playbackshow.

We are already paying money by distance driven for years. There is a high tax on every liter of fuel. With the electric cars becoming a thing this is changing. There will have to come a system to collect the money for the maintenance of the roads at least. I think it's fair if the ones using it the most, pay the most. With a bit of luck the VVD will not be in the next government and we will see what that will bring.

Fuel tax don't care about what hour of the day you're driving, so it doesn' t work as an incentive to avoid rush hours. It's like not having different time slot tarifs for using electricity.

It is a funny video. But there is some context needed. First of all, new cars are hit with a large sum of taxes. The biggest one is BPM, that was found illegal, it now is converted to a co2 tax. The more co2 the car emits per kilometer, the more tax is put on. For instance, a Ford mustang GT in the US is about 50k $. In Germany about 50-60k €, but here the same cost is 120k €. That is 60-70k € just in taxes! Second reason: Petrol is extremely expensive here. Atm 2,27€ per liter or about 9,62$ per gallon. Next ot that, we have a tax for owning a car. That goes on weight and type of fuel. For an average petrol car that weighs 1500 kilo or 3300 pounds is also about 900€ per year. Rekeningrijden would only take away that last tax. So you don't pay for owning a car, but would pay for use. The lowest price per km Voor Rekeningrijden that I found was something like 5 cents per km. Taking that 900€, you would pay more if you drive more than 4500 km per year met Rekeningrijden. People who drive in the west to and from work, will do that in 3 months or less. So Rekeningrijden will be a lot more expensive for most drivers who have no alternative to get to work. Moving closer to work is not an option, because houses are very expensive. Public transport is much more expensive and most of the time will take a lot longer even with the traffic jams taking in consideration. Also there is a genuine concern for privacy if the government can track your movement by car. Also the system to make it work, would cost 300-400 million a year just to operate. That needs to be recuperated. Cars have been a milking cow for the government for decades. Rekeningrijden will only make it more expensive for the common commuter. That is also the reason most people here are adamant against it.

better and cheap public transportation is the key , i dont think a tax would actual work but the money raised could be used for better public transport

The tax would be needed to maintain the roads. I don't believe it will be used for public transport.

They want us out of the vehicles and into the train system to commute from home to work, but the national railwaysystem also wants to insert a "spitsheffing" on the times that everyone has to travel to home/work. Pushing people back into their cars. And if you still go with the train you have no seat cause the train is not long enough to accomodate this many people and there is not enough of them riding in intervals so you can't say I can wait for the next one....

I believe why they don’t want to do this is a little bit like America. It sounds stupid but a lot of people think short-term. They see oh we now have to pay MORE taxes we have to pay extra money to drive. People don’t like that idea even though it benefits them in the long run. For example our health care is with everything calculated actually so much cheaper and affordable for everyone than the US. Yet for Americans for example I believe they have the idea that you “pay more taxes” even though if you go to the doctor with health care etc considered you actually pay less on the long run but it’s a hard concept to understand and many people don’t like discussing about ‘paying more’. And for politicians this is especially important, because it’s in the interest of their popularity and support that they chase their agenda while also pleasing the people. If you know the majority of your supporters really dislikes ‘mileage tax’ than they will conform to that idea just to not lose supporters.

The ones paying the "vroempoen" will be the workers .. the people living in homes outside the cities because it is more affordable, but factory is in the city, because name gives credit and knowledge of where situated... the workers are the ones who are punished for going to work... in small villages busses WON'T drive, because: too small, the workers do live there because homes are affordable... rekeningrijden is WEER de arbijder naaien

It has been proven that it works. Short time measures are never a sollution. The VVD has been the biggest Party here for 13 years so nothing happened during thier reign. Everything just got worse.

Before we go standall behind this , there is said it wil be chaeper then road taxes which is not true... at the suggested 8 ct pkm it wil become alsmost impossible to use your car when you have a lower income. It wil be not 30 euro's but 130 euros a month. Also i can go in 30 min to my work by car. With public transportation it wil take me 2 hours and 45 min... no body wants that.

What they forget is that 9 out of 10 traffic jams happen because some dipshits who can't drive. Trying to pass as many cars so they are "faster" on a zipper lane(?) and have to push their car on the other lane at the last moment, making that full lane brake for them, causing more and more jams. If people would just take their time and slow down a little. Everyone could just change lanes one by one and keep a slower speed. But they must pass another 1 or 2 cars making everyone having to brake again.

Yes, and dipshits are still going to be dipshits. Not matter what rules are in place. But also due those dipshits trying to avoid traffic jams by driving rushed, zigzagging all over the place, they are the ones causing them. The question is how do we keep these people off the road? I'm already working slightly different hours to avoid some of this traffic.

Luckily I don't have that problem. I've been going for over 25 years. Enjoy cycling to work. 3.2 km and if it rains heavily in the morning I go by car. 3.7 km to the same address, same employer. You can also live close to your work?

Im against "rekening rijden/being charged per kilometer/mile, driving cars in The Netherlands is already ridiculious expensive due to the existing taxation on cars.

Arjen always seems to make a sad subject funny. Notice how slow Dutch politics work. This subject is decades old. Still no decision made. To me its a rip off, because fuel taxes are already raised multiple times to reduce car use and it didn't help not even a bit.

@@a.e.gresel312 Beter opletten/luisteren/lezen: niet iederéén die in de spits/file staat heeft geen keus.. er is al aangetoond dat als 10-20% de spits vermijdt, de meeste files oplossen. Veel mensen proberen niet eens alternatieven, uit gebrek aan fantasie/creativiteit, vastgeroest gewoontegedrag, of onbekend zijn ermee c.q. vooroordelen hebben.

@@a.e.gresel312 Ik doe niet aan geloven, ik ga uit van de onderbouwde onderzoeken en het effect op een deel van de reizigers. Jij gaat daaraan voorbij en kijkt niet verder dan je eigen neus langs is en denkt kennelijk dat jij de norm bent voor iedereen. Wat voor jou geldt, geldt niet per se voor iedereen. Bijvoorbeeld pensionados en flexwerkers. Tegenover jouw eigen voorbeeld staat dat ik al sinds een jaar of 16 jaar zonder eigen auto leef en reis. Het kan dus wel voor een deel en het is ook een kwestie van andere keuzes maken. Bijvoorbeeld: als vliegen goedkoop is, gaan meer mensen vaker en verder vliegen, gewoon omdat het kán. Over uren gesproken: wie betaalt de verloren uren van al die lieden - en vrachtwagens - die nu dagelijks in al die files staan?

Best solution against traffic jams is more people driving a motorcycle 🏍🏍🏍. They take les space on the road and if you ever run into a traffic jam you just pass between cars.

Lubach is not helping, it actualy going to make things worse by move away from what has always been very important in our tiny country, our spatial planning and how it been changed over the decades, we have a ministry devote to work things out , where and what can be built or developed, you will never get the whole picture from traffic experts, those guys are only 1 discipline involved in all urban/spatial planning process. But who cares anyway.
