In this video, Minnesota Wild Goalie Filip Gustavsson is demonstrating what proper foot placement in the RVH position actually looks like.
The RVH position (read more about it here: goaliecoaches.com/rvh-goalies...) is an extremely effective position, when used correctly. One of the big problems that goalies find themselves in when using the RVH (reverse vertical horizontal) position is that they cannot quickly recover out of it, or transition from post to post.
This is what makes foot position on the post so important. It's critical that goalies use the gap between the toe of their skate and the toe of their goalie pad to "lock" themselves on the post. This maximizes pad coverage in front of the net, reduces the chance of a puck sneaking into their net at this vulnerable position on the post, and increases their ability to push out of the RVH position.
This video is a textbook example of how to properly execute the RVH with proper foot positioning on the post.

That technique works great when your net is anchored to the ice, it doesn’t work so well with the goal pins that most ice rinks use that just have a small point that digs into the ice.

Thank you that really helped I did have to change my toe tie positioning on my pad to make it easier to get in that position but that has really helped 😊

I think the boot straps become very important at this point to allow you to push against the posts. I don’t use BS anymore and doing this would only stretch the elastics

This is the way I like to integrate, but you see lots of NHL guys going blade to post as well. Watch Demko for example.

I wish I could really understand the RVH... I played in goal many years ago before it was a technique. I feel like I see 10 times more short side/ weak goals ever since it became a thing. Not knocking it by any means because obviously it is better as all of the good and pro goalies do it.. I just don't understand it. Does it put you in a position to be better prepared to move for a back door save or even if the puck is just moved out into the slot?

I get having every tool in the bag at your disposal, but this move has single handedly been the reason goalies are getting beat on terrible shots up high…they drop to soon giving the shooter waaaaay to much room up top,and that’s even nhl goalies…not saying it shouldn’t be used but sometimes not every single time I guy gets below the goal line…

I think this is just a way to hug the post and prevent wrap arounds and should be used carefully. In the video you see that the Stars had no open player to pass to so the goalie’s concern was the Star player behind the net. The best chance for a goal at that instance was a wrap around so the Minnesota Wild goalie hugs the post to prevent the wrap around and with his defense doing a good job covering the Stars players that mean the goalie can focus more on the Stars player with the puck since he’s the biggest threat. The positioning of the opposing player meant that the opposing player’s best shot at scoring is either a wrap around or to slip a puck in if the goalie isn’t cutting all the angles off by hugging the post to make sure a puck can’t squeeze in. This is a situation where this is the best course of action. Goalies want to also minimize the chance to score so since a wrap around or sneaking a puck in due to not hugging the post are the most prominent threats the goalie prioritizes them. Yes goalies are way too quick to drop down leading to high shots getting in more often and this is why it’s so hard to play goalie in any sport since you’re partly playing a game of chance and minimizing risks with no back up. If you cut down one risk that leaves you open to another and if your defense isn’t much help that makes it so much harder and means the opposing team has more dangerous chances that you need to minimize. If you get it wrong since your the last line of defense you will get most of the blame. There’s always a time and place for every tool a goalie has and this was the best tool a goalie could use in this situation due to how the defense was covering the opposing players well. Also dropping down to butterfly prematurely is somethings just goalies behind screened so they can’t see the puck that well so the play a game of chance covering as much of the net as they can with tends to leave the upper net vulnerable but if you don’t go butterfly then more of the net is unprotected. Also 5 hole goals are also very common with goalies dropping into the butterfly after it’s too late.

We sometimes get beat by a bad RVH goal, it's true. But this technique saves sooo many more than it allows. Compared to VH or standing post integration, when there is danger of a centering pass this position selection makes a huge difference.
