Dancing the tinikling is so tricky, if you miss the beat, your foot ends up getting caught between those bamboo sticks. Seeing these makes me miss dancing those. Thanks for your appreciation of the filipino culture!

Spanish only never became the common lingo bcs the English banned it and the Japanese embraced Tagalog. Most of our revolutionaries spoke in Spanish, clearly influenced and fueled by European nationalism.

@@StockyDude Spanish actually was an official language but was replaced when the Americans conquered the Philippines and had teachers from US to teach the population English. It also doesn't helped that Spanish was only spoken by the officials and elites.

Small facts about Cariñosa. In the Philippines, aside from it's Spanish meaning, it can also means, attractive, charismatic. It's one of the courting, Filipino style, dance. The significance of the red handkerchiefs that they held at each end parts, while they dance, is because during earlier times, it's disrespectful to the girls if you touch them. The oldies use to say, if a boy touched the girl, wether it's accidental or intentional, he should marry the girl.

Samantha, this Tinikling dance is supposed to simulate the movements of the Tikling birds to escape the bamboo snares or traps. And you are correct, the tempo is 3/4 like a fast waltz.

Tikling is a bird but it is not a swallow. The dance (tinikling) depicts the tikling trying to escape from a trap. I used to hunt the tikling with a slingshot when I was growing up in Nueva Ecija. I am now writing from Virginia, USA.

Tinikling is pronounced tea-knick-ling. It is a celebration dance usually performed during fiestas and harvest celebrations. Tinikling is from the rural suite of Filipino dances. Carinosa is part of the Maria Clara or Spanish suite of Filipino dances. It represents a courtship dance and costume is from the Spanish past of the Philippines. There are three more suites of dances that you should check out: Cordillera suite from the native mountain provinces, Muslim suite from the south and Lumad suite is tribal dancing also from the south (not as familiar with this last suite).

I obtained these dances because our children, although of at least half Filipino parentage, were interested in learning more of the culture. Adults decided to teach them our traditional dances. @@pearloftheorient2752 Maria and Clara are Spanish names. Perhaps that should be changed too. One of the parents btw is Tausug and I asked her about that. She told me that she herself called it Muslim suite. This is the reason I used a slash because another generation knew them as the former. That's neither here nor there. I assume your objective is to enlighten not direct condescendingly. Be careful how you approach with your words. You are coming across as intolerant and scolding.

Here's a relatively short video showing excerpts from various Philippines dances from pre-colonial, tribal to Spanish colonial periods kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jLVliaSoqquofXU.html.
