I agree, arm vibrato is the way to go! I was practicing this evening, getting discouraged with my vibrato, then suddenly I felt the muscles in my elbow doing something and I heard a change! Then watching your video confirmed that the motion should come from the same place I felt. The exercises should help now, knowing which muscles control the action. Thanks! Also I love watching Hilary Hahn play as inspiration; she seems to have a light touch on the fingerboard with a relaxed neutral hand position I’ve tried to mimic.

It is great to see that the reason why you sound so fantastic is because you think about and things differently. These are the real violin secrets that will actually make you sound like a professional violin player! The proof is in the playing at 8:45 coupled with a great sense of humor at 1:45 - haha! I bet one of the DVD's you were nerding out at was "The Art of Violin". I know I was...

Well Filip, I am so happy that Zsolt Bognar offered me the opportunity to get to your tutorials. I’m just a violin self-taught beginner (and not a very young one) and I was on a verge of abandoning the violin, although it’s entirely the love of my life lately, because of the classical way of teaching how to grip the bow, how to do left or right hand or vibrato and last but not least, that nightmare called ‘shoulder rest’ which didn’t encouraged me to rest at all, but conversely, it get a totally scratchy sound out of the violin, which bring me to despair. I am so pleasantly surprised by your out of the box rethinking of the entire basic violin techniques in order to make us, mere mortals, able to reach a certain acceptable level in violin playing. I would thank you from the bottom of my heart for all that valuable tips and I really hope that more and more helpful videos will come up, soon. Be well and happy, my friend!

8:45-9:09 What a delicious tone 🤤 Your playing is very "old school." I love it! You mentioned that we should find inspiration by listening to other violinists. Who are your inspirations? I personally admire Glenn Dicterow (former concertmaster of the New York Phil), as well as your former teacher, Pinchas Zukerman.

Thanks so much! Zukerman is definitely high up on the list for me as well, along with players like Michael Rabin, Ivry Gitlis, Shlomo Mintz, Viktor Tretyakov, Jascha Heifetz, to name a few.

Like you said, this is the most popular way of doing vibrato. However, arm vibrato is always wobbly sounding and horrible for your finger joints! It just oscillates between two "notes" whereas when the fingers are actually moving on the string, you can actually have a better control and oscillate between more "notes" rather than just two with the arm vibrato.

Hi Filip. I'm struggling a lot with developing a proper left hand technique, which I need to do before attempting vibrato. Basically I'm struggling to keep only the thumb and the tips of my fingers as contact points. I find that my thumb is engaged considerably to counter the downward pressure that my fingers apply on the strings, but I'm not sure that this is bad really. In your video on LEFT HAND, where you show some of Shradieck's exercises, it also seems to be the case that your thumb is very active since you are coming down with a lot of strength with your fingers. I guess what I'm trying to ask is whether you agree that it's false that "everything has to be relaxed" as we play the violin. 99% of youtube tutorials parrot this advice which not only seems vague, but also could just be wrong. If I may ask a couple of questions: How active/relaxed is your left thumb when you play? Does this change when you do vibrato?

I am a beginner at playing the violin, and I am confused about how should I keep the violin from shaking when doing the vibrato. Can you please enlighten me? Also, should your thumb push the violin "up" to support it or do you have to use the weight of your head, chin and neck to stabilize it?

Hi Filip, how can I achieve consistency in vibrato width and speed and evenness? Should I just practice slowly and more often until it happens or is there any tips?

So after watching like 20 videos and my teacher explaining me 3 or 4 times during the past months I'm stuck at the 'bending that knuckle' part, despite the fact I don't know have any known physical issues. I'm fairly sure it's a neurological thing. For the life of me I can't understand how everyone can learn this.
@ArnHaz
@ArnHaz 11 ай бұрын
Hello, isn't the technique at 7:14 just a version of wrist vibrato? Using only wrist? So you are saying practicing wrist vibrato will help with arm vibrato? Am I missing something?
@filippogady
@filippogady 11 ай бұрын
You are not missing anything! That’s why I said I have no idea why/how this actually works. It’s not really a wrist vibrato though, I think it just helps loosening up the last joint of the finger. You wouldn’t apply this movement when you actually vibrate in full speed. Hope that helps to clarify somewhat. I still insist that when vibrating “for real”, the impulse needs to come from the elbow/entire forearm.
@ArnHaz
@ArnHaz 11 ай бұрын
@@filippogady Thanks for the quick response. I think I got what you are trying to say. This is a supplementary exercise to loosen up the first knuckle. I will incorporate your tips to my vibrato practice regimen. The impulse from the elbow thing has to be practiced very slowly. The elbow locks up very often for me. Whenever I try to increase speed, it locks up and I unconsciously shift to wrist movement instead of arm. It's a long process of exploration, as you said yourself.

So, upside-down and backwards, we're playing TRILLS both as a flat, then as a bit sharp, then, letting it balance itself out ! Most violinists I've enjoyed hearing have a "natural" vibrato, and never needed instruction; BUT THIS IS QUITE INTERESTING !

On the viola, I think wrist/hand vibrato works better. The larger size makes arm vibrato difficult plus I think exhausting. I tried arm vibrato years ago, just to add some variety. But, it just felt tense. Maybe it's just me.

Wow. That’s what I think when I heard about your opinion on waist vibrato. I also think finger vibrato is non-sense. I experience a bit of so- called finger vibrato in high position which I think it is just a failed arm/ waist vibrato. But it seems like a raising trend that people think it is a thing. The craziest vibrato I have seen is probably someone combine arm vibrato and waist vibrato and do the vibrato . It did blow my mind, but the sound quality is great.

Haha, i totally understand. You can still TRY to get close to that kind of sound/vibrato. record yourself and then listen to him again, then again to your recording. Pay attention to the speed of his vibrato, and the width of it. By doing an A/B comparison like that you should definitely be able to get pretty close. Also, Heifetz pretty much vibrates EVERY SINGLE NOTE and vibrates consistently through an entire phrase. That also contributes to this sound. Good luck! :)
