I was abused as a child and not guided in school, I flunked all my classes and droped out of high-school. I just assumed I was "stupid" and not as well developed as my peers, life become so unbearable and lonely that I simply said "enough", I hired a tutor to guide me through math from A-to-Z, I'm climbing my way out of some debt and I'm going to go back to school to become a psychologist, Apparently in becoming a psychologist it requires a high comprehension of math from statistics to calculus. So that's what im going to do. Thanks for the content as always.

@@John-ru4gz I think it depends. To be a psychiatrist requires either a Ph.D. in psychology or even a MD in medicine. I think the psychiatrist does have to have a few years of training/education in medicine. The psychiatrist has to intern for a year or 2. I think a child psychologist or clinical psychologist requires a Ph.D. and almost as many years of study as the psychiatrist. A therapist only requires a four year BA degree in psychology. I know there are therapists with only a 4 year degree that work with clients, but the therapist works under the supervision of a psychiatrist. The degree really just really depends on what career in psychology someone wants.

I am hammering away at college algebra and am about a week behind due to gaps in knowledge. A partial mistake was to spend too much time trying to fill in those gaps. On quadratic equations I need to go back and work on completing the square and solving by substitution. Dont get too hung up on knowledge gaps, semester courses move quickly and you cannot afford to get caught in the quicksand. Stay focused on current material, make note of any knowledge gaps along the way and study up on them in your spare time.

I’m 35 years old with a career in engineering. I decided to pursue getting licensed as a PE. I cracked open my pre-calculus book from college and started with Algebra review. Then I decided to review complex numbers. Just reviewing those two subjects expose you to a wide variety of topics. For example, trigonometry is required to work with complex numbers in polar form. I practiced application of complex numbers to engineering problems like AC circuits. Next up is reviewing vectors, which are isomorphic to complex numbers and a logical next step in my opinion. Vectors are the backbone to Statics and Dynamics. I’m simply letting Math lead the way in my preparation and it’s incredible how effective this approach seems to be.

i was realllly bad at math until i passed art. art changed my life but you would never correlate the two until you get the whole experience. math us really a foundational language of the universe because it highlights patterns we wouldn't normally pay attention to in todays cultures

Take advantage of Khan Academy's curriculum and testing platform. You can take short, typically five question unit tests to quickly find gaps and then link directly to that area for instruction and even shorter quizzes to reinforce the lessons. When I revisited trig and precalculus, I would spend 30 to 45 minutes after lecture on KA and it seemed to really help.

As someone who keeps getting stuck in the “I’m not solid enough in my fundamentals I should start back there” I really needed to hear this. This gives me motivation to stay in the present, continue learning “higher” math or the math that I tested into and shore up my weaknesses in math as I encounter them

Why do your videos always feel perfect for my current math journey? I also returned to college after a long time away and I'm currently dealing with the issues talked about in this video. I'm taking calculus and it seemed easy at first, until I started noticing gaps in my algebra knowledge. And I also thought about how to tackle this problem and came to the same conclusions you did.

When I found gaps in my knowledge, I restarted from the very beginning once again. It takes you just a couple of days to go through all concepts of easier math levels. Like this you solidify your math foundation, and you find those little things you might have understood but not in a complete way to understand future topic to their fullest.

This is good advice. I’m studying math at a community college starting at the foundational level. I found that starting at the beginning worked well for a while, but I used a calculator in algebra 1 when I wasn’t supposed to (unknowingly) and now I lack the foundational skills to go onto the next course, even though I have an A in the last course. I’m stuck. I have made the error of going back too far to study stuff I already know, but I think it’s easy to be aware of advanced math concepts and lack the arithmetic skills. I want to take some time to review arithmetic till I feel confident taking algebra 2. I took the class before and ended up dropping it not because it was impossible but because a class that should take 2 hours a night of homework was taking me 6. I have studied logic and philosophy in an academic environment and am studying proofs, trying to get my hands on how to prove it, I feel lost and need some time to find myself through self study. I’m sorry for maybe disappointing the math sorcerer by saying his advice doesn’t apply to everyone, but I would say if you need help with basic mathematics and arithmetic I would start with Kahn academy to do exercises while gaining a deeper understanding of logic philosophy and linguistics, to prepare for a rigorous college education in mathematics. I’ve been in college on and off for 7 years and have studied many different subjects, and I fear I will be in college for 2-4 years still to get my associates. I have tasted failure. Please wish me luck in my courses and education and thank you math sorcerer for your videos.

The other day I was getting a CT scan on my shoulder. I’d never gave it much thought and knew it sliced the image like the area under a curve the volume of a 3d shape. It hit me how calculus really is all around us and we don’t give it much thought.

This is a question I've been thinking about a lot recently. I always thought I was good at maths at school, I was always in the top class, did some of my exams a year early, got good marks. But now, I'm in my late 30s and I've been watching a lot of maths content on youtube and it's becoming more and more apparent that what I was actually good at was passing maths exams (i.e. "these are the types of question you'll encounter, here are the ways you answer these types of questions" -> memorise the methods for solving them and apply them in an exam setting), I don't actually *understand* a lot of the underlying concepts behind what I know (or knew) how to do, which prevents me from progressing. When you google "getting back into maths as an adult" a lot of the time you just get practical numeracy material, but my basic numeracy is fine. I've been wanting to get back into maths in order to follow some of the youtube comment I watch but it's hard to know where to start without anything concrete to aim for. It's also hard sometimes to identify what it is you need to go back and study, as if you don't know what the concept you're struggling with is called you don't know what to google. I was thinking about just jumping back in to a school maths curriculum, but then the question is how far back to I go?

When you said the calculus 1 example, saying that people like to backtrack I was like “this man knows lol”, I’m currently in Calc 1 at uni and I’m consistently finding weak spots in my algebra and trig, so I picked up a precalculus book from my college library and began to review some sections I’m lacking in. The only downside to this tactic is studying old material while studying high level math is incredibly difficult due to the fact that high level math is already rigorous, so it can feel like you’re taking 2 math classes at once if you’re lacking in algebra whilst taking calculus.

I really understand this… In this semester I am taking an introductory risk management course and a calculus-based probability theory course. I encountered a problem that I lack the statistical background for risk management, especially an understanding to law of large numbers, so I just work so hard during the new year holiday before school starts so as to fill in the gaps of statistics. Thanks to the online resources available, I gradually catch up the risk management course (and even master the probability theory course very well)

Hi ....I just want to say that because the question is about knowledge gaps I could say that there are two principals you should never forget about the first one is thinking mathematically is not about problem solving on papers math is about visualisation so if you have a concept and don’t have a solid visualised material picture of it {math concept= content/visualised picture=container} you will forget about it sooner or later second thing you must found a use case for each concept which means a place where you could use that concept to make the thing discrete, a product for example ... and for anyone who has nothing in mind I recommend computer science specifically game development and artificial inelegance

On this Friday after Valentine's Day, reflecting on filling in the gaps with college courses, it is good to consider their strengths and weaknesses. Math courses are verbally weak considering their range is limited to is less than, is equal to, and is greater than, and variations of those. On the other hand, literature and philosophy courses have much greater ranges of verbal choices, and subject matters that encourage filling in the gaps in more creative ways. You should consider taking courses with greater verbal variety and textual diversity. Math has its uses, but literary textual triumphs are more satisfying.

One of my classmates is going through this. They had little success with the engineering courses and think they need to go back to the beginning. While i think it’s important to know or at least be familiar with the calculus series 1,2,3, its not all three classes or precalc that comes up but bits of pieces of everything. Well be expected to do integration/derivatives of polynomials or trig functions or systems of equations ect. I dont have to review ALL of calculus or precalc for lets say dynamics if i already took the class, it’s just like you said the weak spots will show up and just deal with it then. Unless youre a math major better know all of it haha jk 😅

Hello. Thanks for your videos. I have to disagree with you about not going back to simpler content. Although one must be careful because you only have finite time. I did yr 11 last year (with a decade off school) without going back and it was beyond painful I constantly was overwhelmed and had to study all the time and still received poor marks. Over the holidays I went through old easier stuff and it helped me understand the language of mathematics. I felt like I could communicate with my teachers better and ask the right questions.

APOLOGIES ALL! I am new here and I am sorely disappointed! I was expecting a WIZARD! Or a SORCERER! I haven't watched a single second of any content here yet but all the screenshot images appear to show a regular guy doing what is likely regular math stuff. My initial suggestion, before all else, is simply to go ALL IN on this thing and that means to dress the part. Dress for success. You must don the pointy hat, deeply colored robes and a meaningfully crafted LEGENDARY of some sort. If you follow the standard gaming convention then that legendary will likely be a "purple" tiered object, a very sexy sorcerers staff. Since this is about math I would go with a staff top that reflects the best meaningful geometric shape we have today. A glass sphere that contains a black hole-like thing in the center when viewed from any PoV. I've seen something like that done by glass blowers, though I don't know what they're called. Looks like a galaxy in a marble kinda thing... Just saying... LoL

The calculus part is easy what people struggle with is the algebra after applying calc rules. They were trying to make me teach one variable two step equations first but I've realized teaching evaluating expression, one step equations, multistep equations with levels, equations with fractions in that order is best can be done in about 5-6 sessions/days.
