Filling the corn crip with ear corn

Getting the corn put in the crib for the animals this winter. I really like using the elevator over the shovel. Much better for my back! Hope you enjoy!!

Mr. Bill, you should have took a shovel and knocked out a little bit of dirt for the evaluator to set down in. Might would have saved all that extra work. Can't wate till next year for the sugar cane. Let me know, I'll come help you.

That's a good idea! I'll have to try that next year. Made a little sorghum the other day. Video coming soon. Only had enough to make one gallon but plan on doing more next year! Thanks!!

That's an old farmer's trick. All our blowers sat pretty low next to the road we used to line up the wagons on. The one we used for shelled corn looked like it was buried there, lol. The little car tires on the wagon probably don't help either. If the wagon is carefully lined up, that elevator shroud could probably be removed too. There are a few different ways to skin a cat. ;)

Ear corn is what I always had. Had a little aluminum elevator to put ears up in the crib. Using a gravity wagon with that elevator made handling the corn a lot easier.

Got an idea how to fix that... years ago when I was row cropping, I had the ancient auger cart decide to blow the gearbox on me with a full load of about 10,000 lbs of sorghum. No way was I shoveling that out by hand into the truck, so I borrowed an auger from the neighbor. The cart frame was too low for the auger to reach up under it to the trap, so I got a bright idea... I dug a diamond-shaped slot trench (hole) in the ground that the auger could lay in at the proper angle, and be low enough for the cart to back over it so the end was under the trap. The tapered hole acted like a mini-pit so the grain just ran right down the sides to the auger, and it augered it right up into the truck, only took about 20 minutes to do the whole job. You could dig a hole just wide enough for the end of your elevator to fit down into it so it's low enough for the gravity box chutes to dump into it cleanly. The other alternative is, pile some dirt or concrete blocks or even railroad ties spaced properly with some dirt "ramps" on either end and drive the boxes up on them, to raise the box up high enough to dump into the elevator properly... either would work.

I was watching a young guy running a 2 row pull type corn picker the other day pulling it behind a big 86 series IH tractor and he was picking at about 6 mph or so, crazy fast, and half the corn was being knocked flat before it ever entered the rollers... what was going in was piling up SO fast he had a big boiling mess of ears and trash in the center elevator taking it back to the husking beds and a big boiling mess of ears tumbling down the elevator chute going back to the wagon... just choking the machine to death. Then was shocked and amazed when it threw a gathering chain and the shear bolt popped on the driveshaft input gearbox... Several people in the comments tried to tell him he was picking WAY too fast-- I mean on an 86 series six-cylinder high-horsepower tractor like that, a little two-row pull type picker is NEVER going to load the tractor enough to bog it down; those pickers were designed to be pulled by a 30-40 horse tractor back in the day, if not less... but this guy was just sneering at every comment made telling him that's why the shear pin broke and it threw a chain and I was like "no sense in watching a goofball like that!" because he kept telling everybody in the comments "that's not the reason AT ALL!" and making various excuses about the chain being loose and the shearbolt probably being weak or something... Meh to each his own but that sort of nonsense and refusing to at least CONSIDER other's experience or information is just crazy IMHO... they don't know how much they don't know, LOL:) Typical of a lot of these youngsters nowadays! I like old school. It's what I prefer. Yes, I built the crib and the barn it's in. I enjoy building stuff. Wish I could do it for a living. Elevator made this job a lot easier but I wish I could use a shovel like I used to! Lol All the corn is shelled and will be starting beans by the end of the week. Thanks for stopping by Nelson!

Very nice video Bill, nice old John Deere in the back ground, the life stock will love that corn in Winter, did you mill it or did the eat it as is

OH Yes!!! Squirrels are the worst. I left the top section open so air could circulate and they destroyed the corn last year. I closed the top in and hoping that will help. But squirrels have been the worst problem. Thanks!!
