I’m a classically trained artist so if I have nothing to do, I’ll do a drawing of the birthday kid and give it to them or their parent as a gift.

Great tips! I do most of them already, filming the party is a new idea for me :) What I do is first talking to the children while casually cleaning brushes (to look busy), ask them when they have their birthday and what they want to do, what birthday presents they would like and make jokes. And then lure them into having another bracelet and so on hehe. Or I show them what cool things I could paint on them while painting it on my arm first, explaining what I'm doing. I get feedback from the mums that they like that I interact with the children with real interest and care. But I didn't have to sit around for more than 20 minutes on a job so far. Hope this helps, I'm curious about what tips other people have :) And I like your jacket, it suits you well ^^

Oh yes, talking to the kids is such a wonderful thing to do. I bet you are so wonderful with kids. You're so sweet and I'm sure they just gravitate to you.

one of my last events i did i had the foil tats and alot of the moms actually wanted them i had bought pretty designs on purpose hoping to get moms involved they loved the gold roses , butterflies, and the huge necklaces i had silver and gold choices face painting is great clean fun and your right its awesome to have help and tips from other fellow painters thanks again for all you do

Yeah I had a gig where I was booked for 2 hours and there were 6 kids! I painted their arms and there was a kid that left the room so I painted that kid extra long to keep him in my seat.

The water based kid safe nail polish is a thing I would pull out of the hat as well as hair paint ? The chalks are fun to use ^^ or add some mutlicolor hair elastics (the small ones used for the bracelets)

Love the extra tips - especially the rainbow bracelet. I have often resorted to painting Mums and Dads. I do a rose eye design and a vine down legs with flowers. Mums LOVE it.....

Let's see I had something similar happen to me on a job where there was a lack of kids at a birthday party and they booked me for 2 hours and I got through only 10 kids when I was told that they was going to be 28 well unfortunately I still had an hour and 20 minutes and I decided to do is to go to the Host and ask them if I can bust out my glitter tattoo kit. Now get this Ariel there there were also a lot of preteens and teenagers that sometimes act too cool for face paint or act too old for face paint. And don't get me wrong I still added face paint for the rest of the hour and a half that I was paid for but as soon as I bust out my glitter tattoo kit those teens and some of the adults including the kids that I face painted were extremely interested all over again.

All great ideas. I have glitter tattoos & plain tattoos also. I just bought henna and have tattoos for that too. Additionally I have balloons and practice making balloon animals - in case there is no clown or the clown isn’t doing a lot of or any ballon designs. Like you said, it’s just something extra to offer. I love your videos! I’ve gotten the same chair you have and the StarBlends all because of you. Oh, and the pixie paint. When I saw your video with that I fell in love with it!!! Thank you for all your support and ideas 💗 Oh, just read someone else’s post about doing braids. I have a head of hair and am practicing that too for added benefit. Nice ideas everyone!!!

Great advice! I had this happen to me this winter as well, I painted legs of the adults and some of the men wanted mike Tyson tribal design around their eyes. But I think I only painted like three children for a three hour gig. I got to try that rainbow rings great tip.

Thank you so much for the great ideas. You mentioned cleaning your brushes.... how and what do you use to clean your brushes? Do you dress your brushes with a conditioner or anything to protect the bristles between gigs?

nope, nothing special. I use brush bath spray sometimes but I just mean I rinse them out in my rinse well on the job or if there is a sink close by I'll use that.

I do ladot temperality tattoos, even i'm not painting . Its a Dutch product but also biger kids love them. Ladot cosmatics is the compagnie take a look dieren. You'l love them!

At birthday parties I don't worry too much about it. If there are kids around my kit at all I don't walk away...I just tell the kids to grab more kids.

Great Tips! I recently started my face painting and my second event I was left with no kid to paint nobody in my chair and I was so clueless on what to do with 20mins to spare. I feel a little bit prepared for future events. Any tips for sweaty boys jumping in the bounce house after getting painted and coming out with smeared paint all over fron sweat!

I try to use star blends on days when it's hot or events with bouncy houses. Besides that there isn't that much more you can do...sorry!

Makeup By Phina No, not waterproof but the powder base will last longer. It’s what I use when it’s REALLY hard.

How do you manage distance of the event? Do you charge the same to a 10 miles distance than a 35 - 50 miles distance driving?

I charge the same for anything within 30 min of me. Outside of that it depends if I want to do the event. Sometimes I quote my hourly rate for drive time because people are asking me to drive 3 hrs for a 1 hr event. But this isn't my full time job so it's usually because I don't want to do it so they'd have to pay me a lot to show up.

Great video! Planning to start a vlog this week at my 1st big event of the season! What editing program do you use? I am OK at simple balloon animals so I offer that for free at the end if time! It's free so no pressure to do it perfectly. Kids & parents love it!

Hi, editing software depends on what computer you'll be using or what phone/tablet. The free ones are easier to learn when starting out. Just goole based on what device you're using and it will help you get started. I'd like to learn to twist balloons. I need to work on that.

I've used it before and think it kind of hurts but if you have a good one then I think that's a great idea. You can also color hair with a sponge and face paint...it works so well!

I just did two gigs this weekend and at both parties the hostess offered “come fill a plate before you go!” Tacky or not tacky to eat food at the party? Both I graciously declined but I’m shy that way and maybe it’s not a biggie?

I tend to turn it down but usually just because I want to leave. Not because I think it's tacky. If they are genuinely offering then I don't see a problem with it.

One of the most awkward things for me is when I go to an event and they have princesses. I went to one recently I couldn’t get the kids to come over because they wanted to be with the princesses. Anyone got any tips for seeming busy when the kids are already entertained 😩

I have never had that problem...I guess I'd try to get the girls to come get painted like princesses and even try to get the princesses to come over too. That way you're embarrassing the situation you're in. Hopefully some other people have some suggestions too.
