Achal Mishra is revolutionalising Maithili cinema like none. Its history started with Mamta Gaabe Geet long time back and they made successful movies Sasta Zindagi Mahag Sinur. But unfortunetly in order to get into the popularity race they went towards the Bhojpuri style of filmmaking although the terrain is quite Bengal like. There have been a few movies in the recent past such as Mithila Makhan Pvt Limited or Lotus Bloom but none have been as beautiful and serene as Achal's works. Thanks to him Maithili movies and movies based in Darbhanga like Pokhar k Dunu Par have become regular features in the year end lists of best movies. And thank you Sucharita for including all these gems in your lists.

As an audience, it really stood out to me. I think internal dynamics and relationships are less visible to a viewer. I pointed it out not to criticize you or pull you down, but to point it out as a thing to potentially be mindful of. I am a social scientist by profession and do interviews for academic research. It's always helpful to have someone point out a blindspot. I trust your judgement though so maybe it was just fine as an experience for her :)

Sorry for the comment but I cannot let this Jubilee slander pass unchecked especially when Rahul and Ishita make allowances for movies/shows like Pathan, Rocky Rani and Farzi that epitomise formulaic filmmaking. The craft in jubilee is unprecedented on the Indian OTT scene and it deserves a whole lot of love and admiration for it. In fact, Sucharita shouldn’t be apologetic at all about the show - it is one for the ages.

Diversity in genre - lately we’ve been just producing one man army action films. Pathaan. Even the south films are doing this. KGF, Pushpa etc. lets see some sci fi, fantasy, neo-noir etc. ALSO STOP WITH FUKING MASALA FILMS. I’m fuking tired of it.

Afwah! It was painful. Only movie with Nawaz sounding and looking so awkward. Just because it’s Sudhir’s movie. We are not choosing brave movies we are choosing well made good movies. Bhumi was just over the top. Mostly I agree with rest but critics cannot be moral police - it’s about great well done movies! What lens are we choosing here? It’s seems like politics and bravado is the underlying theme. Like I said great discussion- loved it but if the discussion leaves you with these thoughts then you might need to recalibrate or you can rubbish it. 🙂

These critics will not review or appreciate Animal because according to them it is misogynistic, alpha male depiction. Guys pls grow up its the sad reality of lives which North India and West suffers from patriarchy, and film reviewers just because Vanga bajaooed their egos they cant even mention Animal. 550 crores and still counting. Animal was better than Jawan and Pathaan. Ranbir's award winning acting, Sonali Batra's supporting acting and Vanga's screenplay was the talk of the town of the year. And now pls dont reply by saying that we hate or dont believe or encourage misogyny or toxic masculanity. Pls Udta Punjab, Gangs of Wasseypur, Satya, Gurgaon and movies from the west like Annie Get your gun (1950), Death Becomes her (meryl streep 1992) was all about exaggerated, vain and catty women (to be precise what Anima's core was). And its okay People of India loved, hated, enjoyed, got depressed by the movie. And thats the beauty of cinema, you have to take it. It should have been in their list. Sad that reviewers cant even appreciate the effort.

12th fail for sheer simplicity & family viewing. Great performances & inspiring is bonus. Didn’t watch anything else except Animal which was bad. All those hyped thriller didn’t create any interest in me & for a while thought Pathaan & Jawan were same. 😀 Freelancer is also decent…

I still struggle why they call themselves as critics - I think critics are people like Bharadwaj Rangan who has a deep understanding of cinema and help us as viewers see aspects of the movie that we would have missed - these folks are just any ordinary people who see a movie and have some opinion

Just having a perspective does not make you a critic of movies - critiquing books and movie is a craft that is absent from the work these guys do. And as far as their perspective goes, it is disconnected from what most of the movie goers feel.

They call themselves that because it's their profession and they make money through it, they do this as their job. They are connected people film industry and people in it. I don't know what you understand by the word critic ? This discussion is a perfect example of an echo chamber. All 4 reviewers only want reinforcement of their choices and will not listen to or read comments from viewers like us. For instance, they will not mention Kerala Story at all, and talk about Bheed, Joram and Thank You for Coming as great movies of the year. I’m unsubscribing now.
