Looking for a film distribution 101? In this video, I share insights I’ve gained running a film distribution company to take you through how the film distribution process works.
First up, my definition of film distribution: Film distribution is the exploitation of your film in a specific territory through various channels that maximises returns.
So, what do film distributors do and where do they come in?
If you’ve ever felt like the film distribution deals are a mystery, you’re not alone. Lots of students leave film school having no idea how film distribution and marketing works. Many even working in the industry aren’t clear on how film distribution rights fit together.
If you’re an independent filmmaker, producer, director, then you’ll want to learn the film distribution basics from what film distributors do and what a deal with them looks like.
Remember a FIlm Distributor is different to a Sales Agent! To learn what a Sales Agent does watch this video: • Film Sales: What is a ...

Thx for the video! Great insights! When you say Netflix would pay 120% of budget, do you mean 120% of the budget of making the film? Or something else?

I love this about your background "Since 2015, we've helped produce 20 feature films, 18 were debuts. Those filmmakers have raised production budgets totalling over $15m. Their films have premiered at major festivals, received theatrical releases and landed on streaming platforms. "

Thanks Alexi, some great insight there. If you're willing to share then I'd love to hear about Exiles plans going forward in regards to distribution. What types of films are you looking for, for example - genre etc? Which Territory's are you in/hoping to be in etc?

For sure! Our plan over the next 2 years is to release 1-2 Australian films per year, either produced by us or by other Australian filmmakers, in the Aus/NZ territory. The reason for the low output is that in the short-term we are focused on building up our production arm and the Producing Accelerator program. The reason for the focus on Australian films is that we want to support local filmmakers and continue to cement our company's position as a distributor of Australian content with the local funding agencies. And the focus on the Aus/NZ territory is because we have always operated here. Once we have built up and are happy with the production arm and Accelerator, we will likely invest capital and human resources into the distribution company - but that is something we will reassess in a couple of years.

Unfortunately I don't speak English, I'm Italian. Your video seems interesting to me, I have to watch it with subtitles and study it. I'm an indie director, I made a horror film with English subtitles. My problem now is to distribute it..

I wasn't planning to but can keep it in mind. Funding is very limited for short films.

Great video Alexi! Very helpful. Any resources or initial steps you'd recommend for someone looking to start an indie film distribution company?
@AlexiOuzas
@AlexiOuzas Жыл бұрын
Thanks! I'd recommend researching how other distribution companies succeeded (and failed). You can also look at music labels because there are similarities. It's really about setting up your distribution channels and then finding the right product to put through those channels. Keep in mind we are in a jackpot industry, so it's ultimately about finding the hits that will bankroll your company.

Great info and clearly presented. How do you handle obtaining hit song rights, and the costs involved?
@AlexiOuzas
@AlexiOuzas 6 ай бұрын
Thanks! You reach out to the record labels who hold the publishing and master rights for a quote. If it's a hit song it can be quite expensive, tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands depending on the song

Who does subtitles or dubbing? is it the Sales Company or local distributors? thanks

Usually the local distributors. You will need to provide a Dialogue list, Continuity & Spotting List (CCSL) and Captions to the sales agent.
