There is also a Bogart and Bacall 4 movie blu ray set available that has the Warner Archives discs. I just picked that one up. I never saw Lauren Bacall in a movie before this summer and she completely blew me away. I'm sure I'll watch Gun Crazy again soon. That movie is amazing. Great video, Ill have to check a few of these out.

Yeah, “Casablanca,” for instance, is highly influenced by film noir (the lighting, Rick’s jaded character), but it’s way too optimistic to be noir and Bergman is no femme fatale (she’s too virtuous). I tend to have a narrow definition, though. I have a hard time of thinking of movies without a PI as noir until I realized that would negate “Double Indemnity” and no one would say that isn’t noir. As some have pointed out, though, noir isn’t really a genre so much as a combination of elements that defined a certain group of films.

Great picks, Dave! Blind-bought ELEVATOR TO THE GALLOWS during the Criterion Sale mainly for the classic Miles Davis jazz score but the plot looks intriguing as well. In what I suppose is the neo-noir category I also picked up the 4K of Steven Soderbergh's brilliant THE LIMEY, with Terence Stamp in the performance of his career.

Great video Dave! I must admit, I don't think I've seen much noir. I did just get the 4k of Casablanca, but I haven't had a chance to watch it yet. Hard to believe, but I Have never seen it. I also got the new and old versions of Nightmare Alley. I didn't know if they qualify as noir but again I haven't gotten a chance to watch them. I also heard The Batman was kinda noir. I did start to watch it but I am a little limited time. I did like what I've seen so far. Anyway as always, Love the channel Dave and maybe I'll try to get a few noir films in this month.

Talking about Bogart is right in my wheelhouse. Casablanca is a given probably my fave performance of his then Treasure of Sierra Madre Caine Mutiny African Queen Maltese Falcon Big Sleep What I think are his most underrated performances is The Harder They Fall & Black Legion. I'm biased though. Too many good films of his to choose from.

Hitchcock's greatest noir is Vertigo. Scarlet Street is not a lesser known noir, it is very famous and is terrific. Out of the Past is one of my 6 all time favorite noirs and is a masterpiece in every way.. Gun Crazy and Murder My Sweet are both top notch noirs. Have not seen The Set Up. In A Lonely Place is praised by many, including Eddie Muller who has called it his all time favorite noir, but I fail to see what all the love is about.. It would not even be in my top 30. Two noirs that I can watch every year are Touch of Evil and Kiss Me Deadly. I wrote a long review of KMD. Will post it here if you'd like to read it.

Some great picks in your collection. Scarlet Street is a gem. Other Criterion’s worth picking up, The Breaking Point is a good one of theirs and relatively overlooked, it surprised me, Curtiz (Casablanca) directing and John Garfield. Criterion’s Kiss Me Deadly, is a must own. Anthony Mann’s Raw Deal on blu ray is a treasure, recently reprinted. Criss Cross with Lancaster. Welles’ Touch of Evil. Nick Ray’s On Dangerous Ground. Odds against tomorrow. In a lonely place. Out of the past. The list of certified classics is long. Great films that reward repeat viewing.

I definitely wouldn't consider Casablanca noir, but I'd also use any excuse to watch it, so I get it. I personally don't limit the noir genre to 40s and 50s, that makes no sense to me. They just made a lot of em during that time period. I consider M from Fritz Lang the granddaddy of the genre and basically all of German expressionism was the blueprint for the genre. It has to be black and white. No questions asked. Not all coloured films with the same themes are noir. Noir means black. I mean, come on. That's the same as people calling No Country for Old Men a western. That's not really a western and you know it. Thematically there's also room for movement. Femme fatale, detectives, crime, are all welcome and often a dead giveaway for a noir, but even without them it can be noir. The shadows, on screen and inside the characters. Noir is a feeling, which is why there are so many different takes on it I guess. It's not tied to a decade or a country. Movies like The Lost Weekend, Sunset Boulevard, Ace in the Hole, Le Trou, M, heck even The Hustler (which is almost never mentioned!), I mean honestly, Psycho is actually very much film noir, one of the best even, but it is too much of a legendary horror flick that it also never gets mentioned. I still haven't put it in my noir list even. Noir is dark, both on screen and in theme. Sorry, I went rambling on. Those were some great picks!

Hello. I love your comment and excellent insight into genre and categorizing films. Sometimes it’s difficult to label a film when it can be a mix of genres or a blend of styles. To me, the film Alien can be both science fiction and horror as another example. Thanks so much for watching and commenting. I so appreciate your very thoughtful expert approach on this topic.
@cfbilly70
@cfbilly70 Жыл бұрын
@@CinemaDaveMedia that's true, but it's also never a debate if Alien is or isn't one of those. I think? It is sciencefiction and it is horror. You can't deny either one. All the more confirming that noir isn't a genre but a style. A movie can pretty much have any genre and still be a noir. It is or it isn't. Slowly, but surely, Psycho is making its way into my top noir list. People saying it is not noir because it is horror clearly see noir as a genre and I'm convincing myself more and more that it isn't. There's definitely a template. Like, you can make a noir if you simply add the following ingredients. But the great ones will be able to break out of that box. And speaking of femme fatales, a controlling dead mother is almost the pinnacle of the matter.
