This was a US/French co-production. I think that Hollywood put some okay noir films out as well. ie The Hitchhiker, Double Indemnity, The Killers, The Killing, The Postman Always Rings Twice, The Asphalt Jungle, Kansas City Confidential, Strangers on a Train, Shadow of a Doubt, The Maltese Falcon, The Big Sleep, Casablanca, To Have and Have Not, Dark Passage, White Heat, The Stranger, Citizen Kane, The Lady from Shanghai, A Touch of Evil, Detour, On the Waterfront, Boomerang, Panic in the Streets, The Strange Woman, Fear in the Night, Gunman in the Streets, While the City Sleeps, Gilda just a few off the top of my head. Also, we should give a tip of the hat to the German producers and directors of the 30's for their Expressionism film style where some of the key elements of noir(the French version) are first seen.

Gunman in the Streets (Canadian title: Gangster at Bay) is a French/US-produced 1950 black-and-white film noir directed by Frank Tuttle and starring Dane Clark and Simone Signoret. Unreleased for theatrical screening in the US, the film was titled Time Running Out for its US television syndication from 1963. The low-budget B-movie was shot on location in Paris, France. A French-language version of the film (directed by Borys Lewin) was released in France under the title Le Traque ("The Hunt"). Plot American army deserter turned criminal on the run, Eddy Roback, is being chased through the streets of Paris. The fugitive finds his old girlfriend, Denise Vernon (Signoret) and tries to get money from her in an attempt to get across the border to Belgium. The girlfriend's admirer, an American crime reporter (Duke), as well as a countrywide manhunt become obstacles Roback must get past in order to escape. While trying to raise money for him, Denise finds Roback a hiding place in the photographic studio of Max Salva, who may have turned Roback in. Cast Dane Clark as Eddy Roback Simone Signoret as Denise Vernon Fernand Gravey as Commissioner Dufresne (as Fernand Gravet) Robert Duke as Frank Clinton Michel André as Max Salva

Dane Clark was genuinely menacing throughout. Never quite sure why Signoret was so popular (exotic to American ears?) but carried the femme fatale role to the fatal moment. Apparently filmed in France, and yet still elements of Hollywood French persist - "Mais Inspecteur ... I 'av not seen zis Eddee!" type of thing. But for all that an absorbing film. Thanks for posting this.

I always liked Ms. Signoret. She reminded me of a young Lauren Bacall in this film. Wonderful. If you want a film noir, watch Frank Tuttle's films. But I find it odd that after naming 36 names, those who were challenged as liberals with Communist sympathies or friends that had them, in the '40s and '50s continued to work with him. Seems a little dicey. Always liked Dane Clark.

I’ve been in love with Simone Signoret since seeing her in Room at the Top. I’d watch her reading the back of a cereal box! With her wonderful French accent and amazing eyes…wow! But the guy playing the male lead was really hard to watch…..was really overdoing being a creep. A beautiful woman like Simone played wouldn’t put up with such a total jerk, imo. Could be fault of the director who wanted that. Great noir atmosphere in this, though kept me watching.

It seems that Borys Lewyn shot simultaneously a French-language version, "Traqué". But when French TV showed the movie some years ago, it was the English-language version, subtitled in French. What became of the French one ? Contrarily to popular believing, alternate "language" versions (NOT dubbing !) didn't stop in 1932 or 1933, in Europe you can find some of these alternate at least in the Fifties, like "Mr Peek-a-Boo", "Singoalla", "Marianne of My Youth', "Bluebeard", and so on.

Only good for the Paris scenery. Turn off the sound and pay no attention to the scenario and you will enjoy it more.

More demerits because you think so little of these fascinating films that you have to destroy the mood of the ending with your goddamned logo.

I was waiting for the poor Cat to get revenge... how many times did they rehearse pinching his Ear? At 1:27:02 and the next few seconds, we see a face a lot 'beefier' than Dane Clark- a bad double. Although it looked to me that Signoret was older than Dane, but her birth date is 1921, while his is 1912. It must be the weight she put on, although it didn't keep her from doing a good job of acting. She was one of the few foreign actresses that had any acting talent, with the rest being eye candy in some silly movies. Good movie with a good plot. TY!
