I feel like our advantage at the end of the season is that the NFL is a passing league and we had become a run-first team. I think the Bills saw that too and decided to stop our run to make us throw. And I thought before the game we should have started passing first just to break tendencies. You pass to set up the run and run to set up the pass.

Yup. Its the playoffs. You can’t just come in there with one set plan. You have to gameplan against the original gameplan. You have to constantly play chess.

Some plays they stacked the box more than others and we couldn’t adjust early enough. if your used to steeler playoff football it’s no surprise

Every little thing matters for a play to work. Warren choose the wrong gap to release to and actually caused the Bills LB to come up. Warren ran straight ahead to the right of the center against the Bills. In the same play against the Browns, he went through the gap between LG and LT causing the LB to take a more flat approach and get caught up in the pick play from TE and WR.

To me, when Pickens' man went under the rub on the fourth down pass with under 6 minutes to go, Johnson should have gotten the ball. He was near the first down marker with plenty of room to make it easily.
@rstross6 ай бұрын
I agree. Although it is in the heat of the moment, I think the QB should see the LB running with Jaylen, like white on rice. Even if he is able to make the catch it's unlikely he'll pick up the first down.

Yeah the steelers OL got manhandled early. If you’re gonna run duo, those double teams gotta move guys 3-4+ yards. Cannot let 2 guys hold the point of attack versus 4 OL because you’re already losing the numbers game
@binsteez88816 ай бұрын
Playoff games have a lot of momentum from the first few possessions. We couldn’t get the push up front early and we lost all the momentum needed to win

The article today on ESPN in which Art Rooney gives another vote of confidence in favor of Kenny Pickett is disheartening. As a middle-aged fan, this is one of my few long-time gripes about this team's ownership family....hanging on way too long to coaches/players after it's clear that a change is needed. Rudolph breathed life into this offense for a reason and it wasn't only because he is different than Pickett.

The pass play breakdown is good, however I think it is actually Heyward's fault. He is supposed to stop and sort of pick that LB so he can't follow the RB out to the flat. The example against the Browns is perfect the TE stops and turns like he is running a route stopping in front of the LB.

Throwing every run play in the playbook to see if it sticks is better than running the same play over and over i suppose. But I want to see some in the moment analysis from the next OC situation so they can adjust faster to take advantage of how the defense is playing. Isaac got dogged every time those first 5 plays. LBs were downhill at the snap on every play. Thats why we need an OC that designs and calls play action and routes to the middle with some consistency and timing. Hit a dig route early off play action behind the LBs ears and they would have played differently the rest of the game. That in turn would have pulled safeties down and provided opportunity for some shots downfield. Sometimes i wonder if the steelers don’t have a guy in the booth talking to the playcaller about what they are seeing and how to take advantage. Even my highschool team staff had that. Again, variety is better than just doing the same stuff over and over expecting different results, but being a quality OC is less about throwing darts at the wall, and more about methodically countering the defensive scheme and playstyle as quickly as possible to keep them off balance and uncomfortable. Any OC can call plays when everything is working like we saw the last 3 weeks of the season, its when things aren’t working and you have to make changes on the fly that great OCs distinguish themselves.
@alangoddard81526 ай бұрын
In terms of the pass game, i dont like 3rd down playcalls with only 1 read, even with rub designs. I get using the bunch to try and create traffic for the linebacker on jaylen, but its clear all 3 guys in the bunch are solely there to rub. I think you could better design it to still create a rub without wasting 3 receivers and have 1 or two backup routes in case the primary doesn’t win or you get zone coverage. Theres too much talent on the field at receiver to have them just run rubs to the same area
@2kolbe0106 ай бұрын
Exactly. The best offensive minds always have backup plans on top of backup plans. We have to get someone who knows how to adjust on the fly like you said. If the run isn’t working, im not going to keep doing in 5 straight times to get the same result. That’s putting me behind. The box is loaded. A hard playaction with routes that are leveraged to favor easy targets should be the counter.
@eddepersis44796 ай бұрын
Every single thing you said is spot on. What is very upsetting is that Najee actually came to the sideline early in the game and told the OC to throw the ball because they were (obviously) selling out to the run on early downs. Tomlin insisted on imposing his will. I guess that's how you get crushed 5 times in a row in the playoffs, you just insist that what you planned is right, players just aren't executing it. SMH.
@2kolbe0106 ай бұрын
@@eddepersis4479 that is wild💀. No fcking way tomlin would be that damn stupid. This is why certain coaches plah chess and he plays checkers
@eddepersis44796 ай бұрын
Yep, how many times have we heard "the players just need to execute better"? We either need much better players (possible) or what they're being asked to "execute" has a small chance for success in the situations they're being asked to execute it.@@2kolbe010

Bills were overselling run the first few drives with their LBs crashing hard. I was screaming for the Steelers to run a PA pass and when they finally hit that big one to Pat
@eddepersis44796 ай бұрын
Yeah, I think the fact the box was loaded should be a signal to throw the damn ball, not go "Doh, I think maybe a different run play might work, let's try this one", when you're outnumbered and as you said they had no respect for the PA and essentially run blitzing every 1st and 2nd down.
@2kolbe0106 ай бұрын
Great video alex as always. Question though? Seeing where this offense is at the moment (personnel), what would be the first thing you would evaluate if you were the OC? Do you think its enough talent overall? How would you approach this offense?
@Alex_Kozora6 ай бұрын
Thanks! Yeah the things you first study is the talent. Get to know your personnel. That's the OCs first job.

Does Mason Cole ever win a matchup? He always loses leverage to his mark, and they only seem to be able to run when it's away from his guy.

Struggled to read things early. Got fooled. Improved after the 1st quarter
@Dee-nonamnamrson87186 ай бұрын
@Alex_Kozora I think he did fine after the first two series. Steelers moved the ball fine after that. I don't think interception was a bad read. The DB made an amazing play. He was leaning and facing inside when Rudolph threw the ball and then pushed deonte off the route and undercut him with the ball in the air. Terrible play call, though. Should have done a QB draw with that exact formation. What do you think?
@alexm28896 ай бұрын
@@Dee-nonamnamrson8718 i think it's hard for a QB when they're given repeated 3rd and longs. he didn't look great, but the early focus on the run made his job a lot harder.

Could the Bills defense been well prepared for what the Steelers were running because it was late in the season and the plays were previously used against other teams? The called plays shown weren't successful obviously.

Yes. Its the offs. Your strengths will be tested severely and your weaknesses will be exploited if you don’t have enough skills to prepare yourself thoroughly.

Surprise surprise the opposing teams watch film too lol. They defended our best calls in situations better because they knew we would run them and not play chess and build off of these concepts like real offensive coordinators do.

The Steelers never got any of the PI's or hands to the face calls right in front of the refs. Alex, Video time:6:46. Dionte was held by Buffalo's CB on the line of scrimmage by the face mask on the pass that went to warren. the side judge is right there looking @ the line and did nothing. Pickens said it after the game. You cannot play the team and the Refs. Travesty.
