The purity virus, also known as the black oill/goo virus, was an alien parasite featured in the X-Files TV series and expanded upon in the X-Files movie. The Virus was believed to have been bio-engineered by the grey aliens to be a combination of a parasitic virus mixed with an aggressive form of their DNA.

Growing up in rural areas, killing to eat, and keeping trophies of the hunt is a way if life. Human trophies of adventures are only different in their species. Yes, it's creepy, but not as much so as it would be for city dwellers.

I always thought that the alien virus contained instructions to digest the host's bone and tissue, only then to use these building blocks to construct an alien body. Much like how we digest food to build our own bodies. The virus keeps the host alive during this process to act as an incubator.

I am currently watching the series all the way through for the first time, with the movies going where they go in the timeline. I love it. I can't believe I missed this as a kid and didn't watch it. My understanding during the original run of the show was that the virus WAS the alien intelligence and that all of the alien races (Gray Reticulans, Shapeshifters, Lord Kimbot, etc.) were subjugated by the Purity. The Grays and Bounty Hunters were among the first, so it has the strongest agency with them, but the Purity is like a black gooey fascist Borg type thing that has conquered most of the galaxy.

I've been waiting for this one for ages! What an awesome Christmas gift! Good explanation, you pretty much sum up every confusing part of the X-Files' lore (save for a lot of Season 10 and the stupidly obscure and sadly short-lived novel range) in only eight minutes. I'd like to see a video explaining the additions to the conspiracy made in Season 10; IIRC, they kinda jacked up the entire alien conspiracy and said it was the government or something, which definitely doesn't fit with what we know from the original show.

With the way people are with lore and conspiracy theories these days can you imagine what would have happened if seasons 1-5 of the x-files had been published today? Remember there was literally no internet back then (well there was a little but you get what I’m saying right) it would have been insane. Great video, and I think you hit the head on why the X-Files went downhill better then I've seen; because the movie basically just gave you all the info and acted as the penultimate sequence of the myth arc, but the rest of the series was piddling about.

I have managed to produce my own black goo. It is used coffee grounds mixed with eggs that are past their sell by date. Mash them up and you get black goo. Great fertiliser for my tomato plants.

No because he's a total idiot and wouldn't know how to steal anything from another show to save his life and anyhow just look what he did to the Alien franchise ruined it beyond repair, Prometheus and the engineers are cool and all and should have just been there own story but then adding the aliens to it just fucked it all up. He almost did the same thing with Blade Runner 2049. fortunately the writers and movie studio told him to get bent if he didn't stick to the first story guidelines.
