►WE USE THIS CAMERA (B&H) - buff.ly/3rWqrra
►WE USE THIS SOUND RECORDER (AMAZON) - amzn.to/2tbFlM9
Stuff we use:
LENS - Most people ask us what camera we use, no one ever asks about the lens which filmmakers always tell us is more important. This lens was a big investment for us and one we wish we could have made sooner. Started using this lens at the end of 2013 - amzn.to/2tbtmOq
AUDIO
Rode VideoMic Pro - The Rode mic helps us capture our backup audio. It also helps us sync up our audio in post amzn.to/425k5rG
Audio Recorder - If we had to do it all over again, this is probably the first item we would have bought - amzn.to/3WEuz0k
LIGHTS - Although we like to use as much natural light as we can, we often enhance the lighting with this small portable light. We have two of them and they have saved us a number of times - amzn.to/2u5UnHv

If you had to start over again as a filmmaker today... how would you begin?

Not a filmmaker myself but If I was, I’d start small and build from there

This is what I think has worked for me so far. I went to Film school knowing that's what I wanted to do with my life. I met others like me who I'm still in touch with. Made a few shorts to practice my skills, then dropped out, but I continued to educate myself, reading books, KZfaq, and online tutorials. I learned everything possible from cinematography to editing, writing, acting, sound design, graphics, and more which has allowed me to actually get work as a filmmaker, make decent money, and join my local filmmaking community. Then, eventually invest this money in my personal projects to grow in my career further. There is no clear path. I quickly learned that no one is going to discover you. You have to put in the work yourself, and as you gain experience, you will have success over time. I'm not quite there yet, but I know I'm on the right path. I know if I keep doing it, I will get there.

Idk, as someone who was in theater class in HS and as a cinema lover who grew up watching live action and animated films, I look at film as an art form.

As a viewer you can view it as art - if you want to make it as a career, you need to know it’s a business. There’s no wriggle room.

I guess it’s a bit of both. One for the money, one for the art, if that makes sense

Movies suck because of lack of passion and creativity and lack of willingness to try.

A lot of screenwriters write movies they are paid for and are never made. One screenwriter explains it here - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nM5iaMKI193ehH0.html And here is an example - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/j8mpkpagzbWXYok.html and another example - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fJppdqyH3dHLe58.html

I recently watched the film Jacob's Ladder (1990), it's a Hollywood film that's not an entertainment vehicle. Really? Sure, it's a serious movie about a man hovering between life and death. Back in 1990 Hollywood did know the value of making meaningful movies. My point? If you want to make meaningful films don't let any burnt-out hacks tell you different. Meaningful films never lose their value, entertainment films on the other hand do.
