Stuff we use:
LENS - Most people ask us what camera we use, no one ever asks about the lens which filmmakers always tell us is more important. This lens was a big investment for us and one we wish we could have made sooner. Started using this lens at the end of 2013 - amzn.to/2tbtmOq
AUDIO
Rode VideoMic Pro - The Rode mic helps us capture our backup audio. It also helps us sync up our audio in post amzn.to/2t1n2hx
Audio Recorder - If we had to do it all over again, this is probably the first item we would have bought - amzn.to/2tbFlM9
LIGHTS - Although we like to use as much natural light as we can, we often enhance the lighting with this small portable light. We have two of them and they have saved us a number of times - amzn.to/2u5UnHv
COMPUTER - Our favorite computer, we each have one and have used various models since 2010 - amzn.to/2t1M67Z
EDITING - We upgraded our editing suite this year and we’re glad we did! This has improved our workflow and the quality of our work. Having new software also helps when we have a problem, it’s easy to search and find a solution - goo.gl/56LnpM

Excellent interview. Too many people in the arts are completely afraid of "marketing". They look at it as a dirty word. Recently, I was in a forum where somebody typed out, "If I wanted to learn marketing I would have gone to college for it..." Yikes. Well, good luck with that attitude...

Well depends on what we are talking about, right? You really have no business with marketing in a film crew if you are the costume designer. If you are freelance you will have to market your own services.

Film marketing mirrors music marketing both because of the virtual numbers of amount released daily. Jason tells it like it is! The Film maker and Music artist both have to market/brand themselves and their product to be successful! In todays world! Thank you so much Jason!

In today's marketplace, a good movie is not good enough if you don't already have marketing and distribution lined up. A movie made outside the industry needs to be truly mind-blowing in concept or execution. In which case, the movie will speak for itself wherever it gets shown and save filmmakers from becoming or needing to hire marketing people. The problem is that most filmmakers working outside the industry framework are not fearless enough as artists to make a truly mind-blowing movie.

The movie won’t automatically make money just because it’s a great movie…you have to sell it….you have to become a brand….rather than making a film and then finding a target audience…find a target audience and make a film for them

The great thing about being a brand off your own back though, is that the brand is you. If you don't have characteristics/interests you can manifest onscreen then you need to find yourself...that's art.

I went to school at first for writing and film… And came out to a world full of self published bad writers. Then I apprenticed for six years learning production, directing, editing… For every single person to be making stuff on their phone

I love this. I could see myself in him. And realise it's okay to be like this because people would complain about me. We are all different ppl, learning at a different pace and a different consistency and make. I learnt a lot about marketing butnmore so abt how to perceive myself.. and I'm okay.. Thank you for this.. 🙏🏻

I'm thinking about creating my own production/distribution company after watching so many of your videos. It just seems like the most practical money-saving options. I've definitely changed my frame of thinking around having the business end in mind as the the precursor to making any films.

Totally relate to the phone call thing. I will always go wherever I'm going to call rather than calling. No idea why becuase in general I'm socially awkward but the phone is so much worse. I'm less nervous knocking on a door out of the blue and asking to use their garden for a shoot than phoning to renew my car insurance.

Here's my idea for a marketing campaign: tell everyone weeks ahead of the premiere that it'll be review-bombed and nobody will like it, then blame Russian bots and half your audience. Call them racists, manchildren, incels, just heap abuse and scorn on them... and then be surprised when they don't pay for your shit

Entertainer or Artist ? An entertainer is doing work, which he wants to be paid for and earn money with. An artist has a message to convey. It does not work this way today, but it should. Entertainment suffers from the problems described, to many movies, not enough attention, often followed up by not enough revenue. That is exactly what it should be like. There is no reason why a movie should make hundreds of millions of dollars, no reason for a ticket to cost so much, no reason to pay stars seven-digit or even higher fees. They are not worth it, they never were, we were only lead to believe this illusion. The times of big bucks movie studios will be over soon and the world will be a better place without them. Entertainment should pay peoples bills, that's it, most famous people in movie industry are just ordinary people and beside the escapism they offer with their work, there is nothing more to them. Many are even despicable people that should not be stars, popular or even taken note of in the first place. Very few are exceptions to this, but they get famous for them being role models and having something to say. Still, do they need to earn multiple times the money with a single movie then a normal person can earn in a life time on a job ? Concerning the art, the most noteworthy pieces of movie-art are documentaries these days. It is all about a message, which the makers invest much more then just money to get it done and out into the public.
