Stuff we use:
CAMERA - This is the camera we have used to film 90+% of our interviews (over 200 interviews and counting) It continues to be our workhorse - amzn.to/2u66V1J
LENS - Most people ask us what camera we use, no one ever asks about the lens which filmmakers always tell us is more important. This lens was a big investment for us and one we wish we could have made sooner. Started using this lens at the end of 2013 - amzn.to/2tbtmOq
AUDIO
Rode VideoMic Pro - The Rode mic helps us capture our backup audio. It also helps us sync up our audio in post amzn.to/2t1n2hx
Audio Recorder - If we had to do it all over again, this is probably the first item we would have bought - amzn.to/2tbFlM9
LIGHTS - Although we like to use as much natural light as we can, we often enhance the lighting with this small portable light. We have two of them and they have saved us a number of times - amzn.to/2u5UnHv
COMPUTER - Our favorite computer, we each have one and have used various models since 2010 - amzn.to/2t1M67Z
EDITING - We upgraded our editing suite this year and we’re glad we did! This has improved our workflow and the quality of our work. Having new software also helps when we have a problem, it’s easy to search and find a solution - goo.gl/56LnpM

I've always taking the upfront approach when asking for money for a film. It doesn't mean I'm going into a bank or to an agel investor saying "Give me money to make a film," but I come prepared with a budget, ready to answer their questions, and I always try to make sure they know they will indeed be rewarded fir their investment (copies of the film, souvenirs, etc.). Mostly I use Indiegogo or Kickstarter to raise money to make a film.

@@Thespeedrap it's a psychological thriller surrounding a high school teacher and one of his students who believes the teacher is responsible for his poor test scores. It leads to the teacher believing that the kid is seeking vengeance, and it becomes a whirlwind of drama as the teacher's psyche hits some very dark places, slowly descending him into madness and crumbling everything around him. Not too positive there, man lol.

I'm no expert, but a good start would be practical experience in plain old sales... NOT digital marketing! I mean face to face with customers on limited time and budget and learn how the greats can sell a ketchup popsicle to women in white silk gloves... Learn to talk that way. As a GM it's kind of a critical skill to learn to read your room relatively quickly, too. A good GM can seamlessly toss plot-hooks from one adventure to the next without hesitating. It's hit and miss at best, and requires enough prep and improv' but a decent GM can do it... A GREAT GM can tell instantly if he's not landing the hooks, if he's disengaging Players... AND he can salvage their attention by moving on, figuring out when and where to "gloss over" some things, and balance it for others where he needs the effect down to the gritty details. We have to avoid disengaging Players. Those who don't engage, don't have passion for the Characters... and reduce the Game to a dice rolling competition... instead of motivating grown adults with sensibilities to Play Pretend First. This pitching process seems kind of different, but if you can't sell a product you believe in, you're probably not going to land a pitch for a story you (hopefully) believe in being good. There's a LOT of entertainment out there already... audiences do get tired of saturated markets, too. Investors aren't so different from customers worried about how much juggling they'll do over buying a car, let alone what would cause them to make an upgrade, price and all. Social Skills ARE deteriorating as fast as attention spans... SO starting from customers who actually WANT the product you're trying to sell helps... Practicing with Players who already have a friendly connection and WANT to engage helps... I've noticed customers tend to disengage when I pitch "strong"... SO energy has to be carefully moderated, too... AND of course, as with anything in sales, you won't be able to put the energy of passion into a product you can't believe in, yourself... Sorry, but it's a definite readable fact of human nature. You might be able to sell red-hot garbage, but you'll just do far better at selling qualities you personally believe in. AND that's about the energy you can bring. You don't get to cheat either. That only turns into stress and shows easily as bad. Sorry for the length(?) but it's a bit more complicated (to me) than just "trying to sell a movie"... AND it IS where I started... so far. ;o)

@@corporaterobotslave400 I just read a article he was talking about Superhero movies were overshadowing everything.what he would like to see Biblical epics made instead. And I agree with him on that level, I don't blame him.Although I am worried that Hollywood's won't get it or mess it up like they did with Noah and Exodus. And in the case for Exodus there's was a casting issue and about race which was true. I I saw a interview on KZfaq Spike Lee was ask about that.Having black filmmakers making Bible epics just as white ones do.If nobody in Hollywood don't want to take the risk regardless oof hard and complicated it could become.

@@Thespeedrap I'd love to see new Biblical epics. It would stir up a lot of controversy which proves 2 things... 1) ppl are too sensitive and entitled to parade their offended opinions which most ppl don't car about anyway, and 2) the Bible is still extremely relevant.

Yeah. So full of crap. Everything this guy says, i've done fully and completely. He's wrong. This IS how it should be, BUT ISN'T how it is...He says you have to have passion and be a great story teller. BS! That's how I approach EVERY meeting i've ever had and I keep getting the same, lame-ass losers who think that "passion" is a bad thing. I keep getting told that i'm "too close" to the story. That I "care to much" about this story and that being a real professional is about distancing yourself and being able to treat it like a job. That "Passion" is that same thing as talent and, I KEEP GETTING TOLD, that talent and a buck will get me a cup of coffee...HarHarHar! So funny...But seriously. This is MY experience when dealing with executives. I don't know what THIS guy is talking about. This is NEVER what THEY say when you're in the room with them. When you're in the room with them and taking them on the ride through your story and getting deep with characters and meanings and purposes...They turn off. They want to hear about stupid stuff and don't like when you are so "passionate" about the thing you are asking for funding for...

Well you gotta understand that they are businessmen and they don't just want to talk about how important a character is to you...they want to talk about marketing and attracting viewers and hear some concepts that will introduce something rare and eye catching. I do agree this guy is talking too much about passion, but I think what he means most is actually confidence. If you come there without confidence and an actual idea about your project it will be rejected in no time.

I agree with Duro Razbonik. Talk about business first. How much money it will cost. How much money you expect to earn from selling the content. Where will the money be coming from? How is the film going to attract a big enough audience so that it justifies and recoups the amount of money being spent. Most business men couldn't care less about your passion for the story. But they definitely will care about your plan to make them more money. Lead your pitch with what THEY care about.
