John Bucher is a mythologist, storyteller, and writer based out of Hollywood, California. He serves as Executive Director for the Joseph Campbell Foundation and is an author, podcaster, and speaker. The thing that hampered me for the longest time was the "perfectionist" mindset. I'd start writing something and realize something back twenty pages didn't fit with some new idea I had. I'd go back and edit and correct. Which would change another plot point and so on. Things like that would drag down my productivity, weaken the plot and eventually I'd lose the story. Now I write from start to finish and only make a one sentence note on a pad of paper to keep track of conflicts. I finished my first novel in three months that way.

I love how he speaks of the 'terrible' aspect (along with wonderful) of this bizarre desire to write stories, fiction or non-fiction, or write down our ideas, perceptions - it's a drive that frankly I have very frequently wished I didn't have, and also, frankly, I think some folks need to decide to crap or get off the pot - because if this is what you're wanting to do: DO IT! Be doing it. If you ain't gonna, admit it, and move on & don't torture yourself. For me it's not 'thoughts' it's stories, feelings, emotions - the people, 'characters', are the thoughts. Thanks for this, I am subscribed but rarely seduced to click - did so, & glad I did

Really brings to mind this quote from Ratatouille: "In the past, I have made no secret of my disdain for Chef Gusteau's famous motto, 'Anyone can cook.' But I realize, only now do I truly understand what he meant. Not everyone can become a great artist; but a great artist *can* come from *anywhere*." In a fashion, though, I think all of us have the potential to become writers if we use the right template and apply ourselves. One quality that sets writers apart is being able to draw on their natural human quality of storytelling and synthesize it into a functioning organic machine. In that way, screenwriters are a bit like the systems analysts of the artistic world.

I really like the idea of writers going back to 2 or 3 themes. Knowledge is often signified as a tree in literature. So it makes sense that a writer would fill out a branch, and then it's twigs and then it's leaves. All writers are trying to fill out their own branch as thoroughly as possible and maybe that only works when we hype fixate on a few ideas. For me, I noticed that most of the ideas I toy with are about confronting the world of the unknown; the threshold, the doorway between this world and another. Whether it's a blackhole in a space fantasy, or a door to some ghostly realm in a horror, or a mystery involving an eldritch monster, the art I make and the art I buy buy always revolves around this theme. What do you all gravitate towards?

Mr.Bucher’s aura is radiating originality and authenticity!!!! 2 things dawned on me while listening intently to this interesting scholar of his craft: 1) he 1000% accurate about about writing being a calling….. 2) YES with reoccurring themes! As a jazz composer and short story writer….. it’s taken me about 60 years to write a ballad or original story that I can fully embrace…… and then send out on the open sea…. John is also correct that the process is inevitably grueling… yet euphoric in nature! Those who do it…. and do their calling well…. BLESS THE UNIVERSE BY FILLING OTHERS SOUL …. ….. with artistic WONDER!!! I look forward to reading you…… I adore redemption/ second chance themes…… My favorite is Victor Hugo’s: Les Miserable’s…. talk about new beginnings? WOW!!!!!!! Man, I just love this guy! I looking forward to watching the rest of the videos of this interview. I also resonate with the themes of secrets and second chances a lot, as well as acceptance and death. One of my favorite films this last year that dealt with second chances (as well as acceptance and death) was "Godzilla Minus One." The story really hit me in the heart and got my tears flowing. A movie dealing with the theme of secrets and mystery (and could even be seen as dealing with acceptance and death again) that I really liked and inspired my own writing this year was "Nefarious" (with Sean Patrick Flannery). Really low key and a slight slow-burn but definitely worth a watch!

When I start writing and publishing texts on Fictionpress, I have no idea how to write a story. I was directionless and focus on word play than taking words as description of what's going on. Sure, I was a beginner and started to improve my maternal language but as time passed, my vision changed. Now that I understand the principle of storytelling, I have high expectation on how great ideas can be translated into text, only reading those who fall flat. I first see writing as an intellectual thing than a medium of entertainment as much as drawing and movies. I don't read for read, I read to understand how they tell story, how they transport me into the fictional universe and how the character evolve throughout the journey. This is why I prefer J-Novel over others. I wish for something awesome with writing and I am looking for it. I believe this is possible.

when I finished 6th grade my mom gave to me The DaVinci code. I started to read books as soon I learned to read and that book blasted pure dopamine, I became obsessed with symbols. I'm right now Spanish teacher, linguistic and on my path to become neuroscientist. Also I aspire to be a sitcome writer one day

Ye have to be taught, learn Shakespeare and poetry. ..... Read as many books on writing by majjjor authors and they wont tell you. Also Ye have to have a degree Ye are vetted Ye have to be of national importance to get published. Ie a celebrity with a national voice and ready audience then you can fart a book out and say its yours even if a ghost writer did it. Poetry And i bet this guy although its in his voice. Will not divulge.
