Michael Bay's Transformers films may have never been the greatest, but the entry that began destroying the franchise for good is 2017's Transformers: The Last Knight starring Mark Wahlberg and Stanley Tucci and evil Optimus Prime. This is also the movie where Michael Bay's blockbuster career started to struggle box office wise as he followed up with 2020's 6 Underground for Netflix and no BO details. In a not-so weird way, the flaws that Michael Bay started strongly manifesting in Transformers Age of Extinction have now grown even stronger here, to the point of making The Last Knight a box office flop. And so in today's Anatomy of a Failure, let's look at Michael Bay's main faults as a director and how those faults destroyed The Last Knight. Here's how Michael Bay ruined Transformers, and what hope there is to salvage both him and Transformers 7.

The bumblebee movie had better logic: The Decepticons lied that they were the 'good guys' and framed the autobots as fugitives. Even then the humans trusted neither of them and mainly only wanted in on that sweet technology. Even John Cena pointed out that "They're called Decepticons", and this point was actually acknowledge, but made inconsequential to the potential benefits of Decepticon technology, which is at least more solid than "hrr we think autobots are bad, let's hire literal decepticons who have deceived us time and time again to help hunt them without any checks on their power."

Why not just bring up the obvious plot point from no.3... where Chicago happened as a "lesson" that Decepticons could not be trusted and by getting rid of Autobots who held them in check everyone got screwed... but its ok we all learnt our lesson by the end of 3... ..oh wait.. no we didn't coz 4 happened and now we are at the same problem... but hey at least we learned... oh wait...

The original Witwicky story was abandoned. In Transformers 1, the elder relative, explorer Archibald Witwicky, discovered Megatron and the AllSpark, buried in the Arctic ice. The map to its location, burned into his glasses by Megatron’s navigation system, was a large part of the original plot. The Witwicky’s were tied to the transformers by accident. Fast forward to The Last Knight, the Witwickies are referred to as guardians, who forged and maintained a secret alliance with the Transformers for over a thousand years. No. Just plain NO! Not even close to the storyline.

It can't even have a payoff. They showed that Unicron is the Earth. How can you have characters ON THE EARTH fight A TRANSFORMED EARTH. One question that writers couldn't figure out in the entire script writing phase while audiences figured it out in literal seconds.

funnily enough, writers alot infact. that is one of the problems. mb is famous for saying that he "took a bunch of the best writers an locked em up in a room for a week". alot of people write these scripts. instead of having one person with a vision and a coherent story to tell. just a bunch of people who just toss ideas.

I think its described in the games Fall of Cybertron and War for Cybertron. There are gameplay videos which entirely describe the events. I think Bay should've stocked to that story. Its so deep and the characters are relatable.

You know what drives me completely insane about these movies? I have been a transformers fan since childhood, and I love the franchise. However, to the mass public, these movies are apparently all the transformers franchise is, and I absolutely hate that. The more and more I think about it, the more and more these movies infuriate me so much. The more you watch the cartoons, read the comics, or play the video games, the more you realize that those would've made a better film series than what we got. And what really worries me is that is the feeling that these movies turn against the transformers franchise, which they shouldn't! Because, transformers is an amazing franchise, with so much lore and stories that'd be perfect for a live action film series. Just not this! Not this abysmal, wasted opportunity.

@@Tanknuggets217 Since then, he finds himself pretty much stranded on Earth like the Autobots. See, in TF1 he just thawed from the ice/holding cell below the Hoover Dam, so his view of the tiny little humans was all new, in RotF, he saw the fall of his mentor at the hands of Optimus while assisted by humans, in DotM a similar thing with Sentinel (while not his mentor, but still a thing), he kinda started to "respect" those tiny little creatures. He might still be hell bent on conquerring Earth or rebuilding Cybertron, or whatever his ultimate goal is, but he might as well find humans as a power to be reconned with. They managed to kill most of the Autobots and imprison his fellow Decepticons on their own towards the 5th movie, so might be a thing to consider, if you're helping "your god" to rebuild Cybertron and need your fellas to aid you, that you'll be asking politely.

Aspect ratio isn't necessarily a creative thing. It can be, but doing the technical work of maintaining it if you don't care about it is the bare minimum of film editing. That action sequence really hammered it in for me just how little shits Michael Bay gives; absolutely zilch.

Also, what filmento failed to adress here, is that he thinks everything with The Last Knight is Michael Bay’s fault. When he says all the multiple plot points for example is all just MB shoving everything into the movie. When in fact it was producer Lorenzo DiBonaventura (producer on all TF films and sort of a showrunner) who wanted to cram everything into this one movie. Michael Bay and the writers room wanted to make different movies covering the King Arthur mythos, Bumblebee in WW2 and evil Optimus vs the Quintessions. But Lorenzo rushed him to make everything into this movie. The same could be said for the runtime. It was supposed to be 3hr, and that would make it way more cohesive. But them Paramount freaked out when it got leaked and pushed Bay to make it shorter. So it is a bit like the Justice League version. I just hoped Filmento could have done a bit more research on this, when at least this time not EVERYTHING is Michael Bay’s fault like he says in this vid.

one of my biggest gripes of the movie is how michael bay tried to “modernize” the transformers design. the original cartoons had bright colors and striking designs made to clearly distinguish between characters and clear cut fight scenes. these movies just make them all grey CG abominations where you can’t even tell which is which in a fight

It amazes me how Michael Bay thought this was OK. Optimus is shown in a picture fighting a war in his transformers 3 form (check his stomach). Even though he only arrived on earth in 2007. And he had a different form in that movie.

I honestly expected an oil rig, a power plant, a water dam, or a missile silo to be a Decepticon's target, because energy and fuel to convert into Energon, which is the lifeblood of ALL Cybertronians, and Decepticons are greedy? About half way through production they sent a poll out on TFW (transformers world forums). Basically like the biggest transformers fan site on the interenet, anyway they asked who they should bring back. Everyone agreed barricade because he hadn’t been killed off and his death in Dotm was ambiguous enough to believe he hadn’t died. Well in the film bonus content they literally said they did it for kids and had no mention of him not dying, they just said they brought him back for no reason. Just pure shitting on ACTUAL fans of not only the transformers franchise, but the bay films themselves. Just no effort whatsoever. That’s why everyone hates the last knight. Bayformers fans and regular folks.

When I finally watched this movie, all I could think was "wow, this doesn't feel like a coherent sequel at all." I did notice what you pointed out about undoing Galvatron and the upgraded Decepticons. A smaller detail that bothered me was when Megatron found Starscream's head and said something about his "traitorous friend." As any Transformers fan knows, is a common trope in the franchise. But the problem is that was NEVER touched upon in the movies, so the line fails!

"You've failed me yet again, Starscream!" said by non other than Megatron himself in the first movie, after he thaws out and meets Starscream, who assumed leadership over the Decepticons. Also in the second movie: "Starscream! You've let me rot on that human rock!" "Someone had to assume leadership in your absence, my lord" "Remember this, Starscream, there is no other leader, than me!" I may be incorrect with details, I'm pretty aware of that, but similar dialogues happend, it was acknowledged in both of the first movies and it implies, that Megatron was well aware of Starscream's treacherous temperament and held him close (as his 2nd in command) going along with the famous saying: "keep friends close, but enemies even closer".

I don’t think you can blame MB entirely for these flaws. I’m fairly certain that the Transformer Franchise Writers Room consists of 4-6 eight year old boys playing with some actual Transformer toys, with two adults in the room. One to run interference when the inevitable fights break out when one boy decides his Autobot just killed a Decepticon and the other protests No He Didn’t (Yes He Did, No He Didn’t, bwah, bwah , BWAHHH etc) and the other to transcribe everything, verbatim. Then they just slap a title on it, call it a Shooting Script and ship it to MB.

Never understood how the Transformers movies were too heavily human involved. Its right there in the name Transformers. In the animated series there where whole arcs that didnt even involve humans. he should have just stuck to the drama and stories involving the Transformers.

I imagine it's a choice related to the action: it's better for a big blockbuster movie to have giant robots fight from the perspective of the humans, to make it seem grander. And also because, if you did that, you'd have to develop them a lot more for the audience to relate, and the producers didn't want to go through the effort of that and just slapped a bunch of generic human characters as the protagonists instead.

In contrast to say Godzilla. The transformers can actually talk. They can show emotion. They actually get all this talent but they just won't let the robots take the lead. Watching clips for the films, the Transformers can clearly hold the audience attention. We don't need the hot chick or the screaming man boy. Actually some of the humans Iike Lennox could totally stick around. They are useful and I'd be more intrigued in seeing that group and the transformers interact as equals. I think it's more that Bay just wouldn't change it up. I think other directors would(and did) in Bumblebee.

A lot of it has to do with cost. All that CGI takes time and money, because it is a live action movie at its core, rather than fully animated. Probably part of the reason why the robots are made up of jagged parts is so that they can cut corners during the fight sequences and not have it be apparent. If I recall correctly, Bay himself stated that one of the reasons product placement is so prevalent is that it allows for more robots and more fight sequences. That product placement aspect applies to organizations as well. Showing Chinese things in a positive light makes the movie more appealing to Chinese investors and no doubt gets some access for locations. Meanwhile, the US military likes movies that show them in a positive light, seeing them as a recruitment tool. And even with that, the film makers still look to cut corners where they can, like in how they used a sequence from The Island and added CGI to it to use in the Transformer franchise.

To demonstrate your point about all the jokes, look at Pirates of the Caribbean. In "At World's End", when they find the dead kraken, there is some goofiness from Pintel and Ragetti, but we cut away from them and have a full, serious conversation between Jack and Barbossa. No interruptions to ruin the mood, just two veteran pirates lamenting the end of a era. A lot of film makers could learn from that.

Man, this movie had so much potential to be great along with the fact that they even introduced arthurian legends into this which is just crazy and amazing as the arthurian legends has some crazy moments especially for king arthur, along with the Iaconian knights that are freaking giants compared to the new generation of cybertronians, quintessa, earth being unicron, and even adds more depth to the cybertronians past along with how they were made and how these creators can be connected to unicron, primus and the one, whom that is the creator-father of the two brothers. It felt like they skipped a few years to be honest and hadnt fleshed out the timelines better and polished it and with it creating a new can of worms in the lore like the witwicky storyline being gutted because shia labeouf doesnt want to be the star anymore.

The worst part is, it went IN DIRECTION possible. Not just for the movies, but also for the TV Shows being specifically aimed at smaller children rather than it actually having some balanced age value for the rest of the franchise, and to put the icing on the cake, HAVE YOU SEEN THE TOYS. By god, did hasbro just BARLEY save themselves with the studio class series toys, then the ACTUAL toys. Literally look at the prime figure from the last knight, and you will see HUGE differences. This sucks because it’s just a real Great Depression point for the transformers franchise now.

My favorite movies were the original Transformer Trilogy and Bumblebee ( because they were fun ), I enjoyed AOE kind of and I remember it clearly and I loved the new Autobots but I remember my whole family thinking we were seeing the wrong movie with the knight fight at the beginning for TLK.

Something about how this movie cuts its scenes together just hurt my brain. every scene shifts camera angles so quickly that it made every scene so confusing. maybe makes sense in a big action scene but even in a moment of dialogue there's dozens of unnecessary cuts that are so abrupt it really made the whole movie almost unwatchable.... despite being a life long transformers fan. such a shaame 😥😥😥

Watching this video, I repeatedly had moments of: "I swear I saw this movie", followed by: "I remember nothing about this scene", then "oh yeah, I def saw that". It just shows how remarkably unmemorable this film was. The entire movie is a giant "shrug" but then again, I felt the franchise nose dove after the first one and even the first one was kinda garbage but it was different and fresh at the time so it was fun.

Stop it. Hopkins praised Bay and said he loved working with him. If you watched the movie, you saw also how fun he had playing this role. He is an award winning actor played so many tough roles in his life span, why can’t he have fun late in his career? Is there an contract which states that well known actors can’t be in fun blockbuster movies?! The Transformers franchise has brought in nearly 5 billion at the global box office, Bay is also one of the most profitable filmmakers ever. Even if you don’t like it, doesn’t mean most others does as well, as proven by the large fanbase and extreme amount of money these movies have gotten.

Who could expect a fifth movie about transforming robots directed by one of the most controversial directors causing fatigue? Young audience gets tired quick and want something else. People got tired of Transformers, what’s the problem? Two of the movies in the franchise brought over 1 billion dollars and are on top30 most grossed movies of all time. You can call every single person who spent money on this franchise a dumb person, but I’m sure you also spent some bucks on this. It is so popular to hop on the «hate-bandwagon» and be part of the «flow» when you hate big movies. I especially hate people criticizing without having seen it, or seeing it on a crappy illegal site. This should be experienced on the biggest theatre possible.

8:54 To be fair, the only retcons were in TLK and AOE. The first Movie had Megatron fall to Earth looking to the cube. ROTF showed that Cybertronians had been on Earth before Megatron and Sector 7 were even aware of this. DOTM tells us that a few people were aware of the Cybertronian race however were threatened/manipulated into keeping it a secret. AOE broke this by telling us that Cybertronians had been to Earth with intent *before* the Primes showed up which doesn’t really make much sense as they refused to harvest resources from planets with a sentient populous. TLK butchered it by introducing the Witwickens, showing many autobots in pictures taken before they landed on Earth in the original film.

I've basically gotten to the point where I've accepted that The Last Night absolutely sucks and have, in my mind, just said "Okay, this movie takes place in a separate universe where instead of the end of Age of Extinction, we got a world where Cade never is promised a home, the Autobots are still hunted after the destruction they caused once again, and Optimus left Earth for the same reason he did." In my head, it makes more sense to do this, but I understand why this film, in continuity with the rest, makes no sense whatsoever
