Fun (or sad) fact about when Usnavi finds Abuela Claudia. Anthony Ramos (who plays Usnavi) actually found his grandmother the same way when he was 10 years old. He said that that was the most difficult scene for him to film.

I saw the movie twice in theaters and the theater was nearly empty both times. Which was kinda sad cuz I saw both black widow and a quiet place in theater and they were packed so I can’t blame the pandemic for it. I still loved it tho.

@@Saeiyu I’m Afro-Caribbean and this sounds like an ignorant and dangerous take to spread as “a lot” of people not caring, which is not true. Colorism and anti-blackness is very prevalent in both West Indian and Latin countries, just like it is in the US and literally most of the world. Latin America/Caribbean’s post-slavery caste system was literally based on skin tone. Pointing that out is not racism. Also, as someone who grew up in NY, Washington Heights is indeed mostly Dominican, and brown/dark skinned folks at that. So it’s not racist to point out that reality either.

I like how you loved the movie and were able to address the issues surrounding it in a non attacking way 👍🏻 I think people are going after Lin and this movie too harshly and while colorism is an issue and should be something to work on, it doesn’t mean people should completely hate this movie and not like it for what it is because it’s a really great movie

So many ppl didn’t like the movie because there wasn’t many dark skinned Latinos but at the same time we have to remember it’s a movie. How ppl play the roles matters, we shouldn’t give a white person a role just because they are white and we also shouldn’t give someone a role just because they have dark skin. The cast knew how to act, sing, dance and had great chemistry which is what matters in a movie, also Latinos come in all shades of brown.
@gladiscontreras3762 жыл бұрын
@@3m0n1 I understand what you mean but I don’t think the directors did that on purpose they were just trying to get the best ppl to play the roles. I understand why people are mad but that doesn’t mean it’s ok to suddenly view Miranda as a bad person or for him to get hate in general. A movie will never be perfect and people make mistakes but he apologized already so I just think ppl need to put their anger somewhere else…

I believe Lin’s vision was to create a story about Latino groups and their struggles, with the Heights as the back drop. This is not a documentary about the Heights. In addition, the film was filled with different skin colors, two of the salon girls as an example: We have to stop the drama, and take this as the first step towards a goal. This is only one story out of many to be told. I don’t believe there were complaints like this during the 2008 stage version. The momentum has been ruined. Now I wait for the next writer, producer, composer to proceed on taking Latinos forward. In all honesty, hopefully it’s a Afro Latino. Let’s move on and grow.
@p0rnany0ne3 жыл бұрын
There were complaints about the broadway musical. Especially when they cast an italian. The point was Speaking roles. Sure there were a diversity of background extras. that's true of most all movies. The problem is, if you're going to represent washington heights, it's not hard to be a little better about having a more accurate representation You can't really tell a story about latino groups and their struggles when you exclude some of their voices. Colorism is a major struggle of the latin community. People have a right to draw attention to that.
@rzone12863 жыл бұрын
@@p0rnany0ne Were there colorism complaints during the 2008 stage version like there is now? These are very sensitive times, and Latinos should use their opportunities wisely. How will complaints help? Is there a Afro Latino Lin Manuel Miranda that will now take over? This film is not a documentary about the heights. Lin’s story is about groups of Latinos, and he is opening the door for other Latinos. Two of the salon women, speaking parts, are Afro Latinas. Thanks to Lin, the country knows about a place called Washington Heights, and these groups of Latinos. People can google if they want to learn more. These complaints are just ruining everything.
@p0rnany0ne2 жыл бұрын
@@rzone1286 to the contrary, even Lin apologized and pledged to do better. Furthermore, if people go to the heights, they’d see it’s not like it is in the movies. Why give a false representation of an actual place and actual people Also, do you really want the heights on the map because that tends to lead to gentrification Critique is a basic right in America. Free speech and all. Plenty of people still wouldn’t be represented at all if it weren’t for complaints. But now they are complaining about something that does not benefit you, you have a problem with it? The complaints don’t ruin everything. They just ruin it for you
@rzone12862 жыл бұрын
@@p0rnany0ne Lin had no choice but to apologize. I’m sure that he was surprised at the lack of support. This film was opening a door as a first step for Latinos in general, but now, it seems it’s a separation. Again, it’s not a documentary about the heights, therefore, instead of focusing on only Dominicans, Lin decided to tell a story about groups of Latinos, with the Heights as a back drop. For those that protested the film, you can now take over and write, produce and compose the next project. Let’s see how far you can take it.
@p0rnany0ne2 жыл бұрын
@@rzone1286 I’m glad you extended that offer. Because you know what happens to most dark skinned writers, producers and composers? They get pushed to the background. Colorism isn’t just playing on the screen, it’s behind the screen too. So the people who have the Privilege to tell their stories, the people who have the audacity to use the heights as a “backdrop”, have a responsibility to do it right.
