He wrongly believed, a good friend supports whatever his friend does. But Krishna taught Karna, that a good friend guides his friend to the path of Dharma, even if they have to break their relationship. Duryodhana would have never started war without Karna's support. So, Duryodhana would have lived, had Karna been true friend.
