In this video, I’m giving myself the challenge of leaving the Fuji X-H2s at home using the iPhone 15 Pro Max as my main camera to film a photo trip out to the Brecon Beacons. I’ve never been that intrigued by iPhone footage, but the recent addition of Apple LOG sold me on the 15, and it’s certainly lived up to my expectations.
You can download a few LOG clips here if you want to mess around with them: drive.google.c...

For having fun the phone is always an option. However It can be my Senhieser Studio Head phones but the sound of this video is not as usual if I may say so. Also the lens of the phone does distort a lot when you walk in and out of the scene. I prefer the more quality approach with the Fuji.

Thanks for the trip to the memorial. As a fellow Canadian I always enjoy the connection to Canada that often appears in your videos. I agree with the other commenter who implied that you could film you videos on any device and it wouldn’t matter. I would still thoroughly enjoy them. Thanks for the great content.

Also it should be noted that if someone has the Tentacle recorder instead of the little Zoom you have, that syncs timecode with the BM camera app and Resolve will sync those for you

To be fair, I don't mind using a phone for recording. I have an iPhone 11 Pro Max and it's more than adequate for my needs. The video doesn't look anywhere near as good as what I'm seeing from the 15 PM, but I still like it! Also, it's nice to see some of the spots I visited earlier in the year in the Brecons. I do need to get back there and to water country.

Am I the only one who thinks it looks terrible? :] maybe not terrible but doesn't look natural to me. Some scenes are better than others, but for example the water in that first shot looks really weird and grainy. Sometimes fine detail in the trees looks really grainy as well. But I think you did great with the color grading Kyle. I wonder how much of that if any is caused by youtube compression. But honestly for how practical and usable it is, can't be too harsh on it. I think it's usable. Sometimes you don't want to carry a heavy camera with you everywhere. Nonetheless I think I would opt for a cheaper phone and get a dedicated camera for a similar price
@rickbiessman6084
@rickbiessman6084 8 ай бұрын
The water in the very first scene looked pretty messed up to me too. Not sure if some of that is KZfaq compression, but it definitely lacked detail. The rest looked much better to me though, and if I hadn’t seen the water first, my impression probably would have been better. =)

I tend to agree, the Iphone stills in particular looked ill composed and half baked. When the scans from the Pentax were dropped in, it showed that 'phone cameras have a long long way to go.
@KyleMcDougall
@KyleMcDougall 8 ай бұрын
Fair enough. Could be YT compression, or my grade/grain added. Or maybe that's just how it looks. For my uses, I think it will be great to mix in a b-roll footage for some videos for the future. Still fun to do this test though for an entire trip.

Video production is light years out of my element but it’s remarkable what the iPhone can do. I hope your video coaxes a creative to get out there and make content even though they don’t have $20,000 in gear. And when you’re done you can call ahead and have your pizza ready for take home. Try that with your Sony or Fuji! 😁 Unrelated, Ektar handled those shadows around the streams better than the Portra imo. Lastly, thanks for sharing the memorial. Canada’s HUGE contribution to the War effort was staggering in per capita numbers. It gets an honorable mention due to your boisterous neighbors to the south.

Images were wonderful, but found the audio to sounding muddy or canned....not a fan of the video footage seemed to be less sharp on my 27in 4k monitor...but I'm sure if most of your audience is watching on cell phones they wouldn't be able to tell the different anyway. Hopefully this was just a test and you go back to shooting video as before...

Wow, REALLY impressive! 😳 The edges do seem a bit mushy, as well as the finer detail in the forest (moss, fine twigs and leaves), but man... 98.74% (very scientific figure) ope people watching would never notice. AND it doesn't matter, if the story is good, which this one it is. Very impressive, who would have thought, just a few years back, eh? (See what I did there?) Another great one, cheers man and love from Croatia!

I agree. Footage looks fine. Not perfect, but fine. As long as you don’t need shallow depth of field or go into really low light and you know what you’re doing, this phone seems to do the job. And who knows, maybe in a couple of years they’ve got those two things figured out as well. "Cinematic mode" and "portrait mode" aren’t there yet, but it’s probably only a matter of time till they look actually legit.

For a phone, I was impressed. As mentioned, the filter I was using was pretty bad, which could lead to some of the softness. Or the grading, or the compression. Or it's just a bit soft, hah!

To the layperson, the quality of the video is judged in part through the storytelling and then production. The gear for the most part is not that important. Especially if you consider how most people consume content on smaller screens anyway, then this offers excellent results.

Waiting for at least one person to shoot it in daylight, sunny, with harsh shadows and blown highlights, to really see if it's so capable as every instagrammer, tik toker and youtuber says it it. I do love your channel and honestly didn't expect to see this type of content here, but i do get that it would be much easier to shoot on a phone on a long day travel.

@evo271

@@chrisnielsen9885 that therm is so overused that it lost it’s meaning. The only people going out at the golden hour to shoot are the producers of a movie and the youtubers. Real life people go out when they have the time and when they feel like it. Not everything has to be cinematic, a good story will always be a better outcome than someone pouring coffee and then sell you an overpriced pocket knife or lens filter.

@@evo271also… i have shot the 15 pro max with the BM camera app in LOG in the worst possible conditions - inside our dark half finished office at work when it’s a very bright day outside. I found that there is virtually no highlight headroom (compared to a proper BM cam that you can push until it’s all white and still get it back) but you can pull the gain up a ton and get back shadow detail. So best to expose for highlights I think

What is causing the almost solid area of gray in the water in the shot starting at 0:39 ? Halfway across the frame, the branches are sharp but the water behind them is just a solid color. I thought it was due to not enough bitrate, but it doesn't really macroblock or anything in other parts of the frame.
