As always, great to hear your method. Especially, in these kind of circumstances where you have to make decisions between gear. I’ve solved my low-light woes shooting with some of the Voigtlander lenses, but shooting events would’ve definitely require the zooms. So I love to hear your rationale behind your decisions.

Thank you Dez, I'm really glad to hear you got so much value out of this. The Sigma was a game changer for me. I've been a little frustrated with the Ninja V is quieter situations lately, as the fan noise is quite loud, but still a great tool to have in the kit.

Wow, this setup is sooo small ! I love how compact you have built this ! Just for fun i checked the price for this setup if i wanted to go to panasonic.. and it's 4500$ in my place. Soo, i would have to sell a loooooot of my current gear to get this ( the a7rii, the zeiss 35 f1.4, my liver, etc ) But, it's sooo compact, once again, i really love that form factor ! Well done Scott !

@@ScottBell The "if" is subtle in "if i want to go to panasonic" but that's always in my mind, the killer cinematic combo with the 18-35 and the atomos is reaaaally sexy for me. I'm not happy with the color range i can have for my grading with the sony a7rii. I will wait til the a7siii comes out to see the option, i have managed to makes some grate things happen in my everyday life, the video part is the cherry on the cake, but it's not that important right now, it will be soon enough when i make some room for clients work in my schedule. But yeah, your setup is really nice !
@ScottBell

I keep getting happier with the GH5 as I learn how to better expose and grade footage. My main frustration with the camera is for photos. I really want a hybrid camera that is great at both. Sony seems like the best option for that.

FANTASTIC VIDEO. Back in 1979, when I first started to go to gigs, WE WERE ALWAYS SEARCHED FOR RECORDING EQUIPMENT. Not every gig but at most gigs, we were frisked by security then allowed in, SONY PRO TAPE RECORDER was the best recorder at the time to have but other manufacturers were making good tape recorders and as for video tape recorders, they did exist on a professional level but for main stream public level, they did not exist but slowly, during the eighties, they could be hired from certain electrical stores but were extremely expensive to buy. ALL THEM BANDS, CONCERTS, FESTIVALS that took place back in the day that occurred but never recorded by the band, just because the band or even the manager or show promoter SAID NO. WE WILL NOT RECORD THIS EVENT TONIGHT. I did like the tape traders in the eighties though. These guys alone promoted bands just by sending tapes to other countries if the punter was willing to listen to new up and coming bands and old concerts on tapes. FANTASTIC TIMES. Now with modern technology at hand, go to a gig now, just as the band hits the stage, EVERY ONE WHACKS OUT THEIR PHONE AND RECORDS THE SHOW. GOOD THING AND BAD THING. LET OTHERS RECORD THE SHOW and you DANCE AND MOVE TO THE MUSIC. THATS WHY YOU CAME TO THE SHOW. NO ONE MOVES AND SWEATS ON THE FLOOR NO MORE. SWEAT =GREAT SHOW. COME AND ENJOY THE SHOW. LET THE BAND SEE YOU MOVING TO THEIR MUSIC AND HAVING FUN. THE BAND THEN REACTS TO YOUR ADRENALINE AND THEY NOTCH UP ANOTHER GEAR. ENJOY THE SHOW PEOPLE.

I love that SmallRig mounting thingamajig (SMALLRIG Field Monitor Holder Mount with Quick Release NATO Clamp - 2100, add it to your affiliate links!). I saw that on another video and it's made my life with field recorders so much easier. It's pricey for what it is ($50). There's also a screw-on for $40 and an ARRI Standard mount for $50, but the NATO mount is the one I end up using as I can switch it out for a handle or any random thing. It works well for the heavy Shogun Inferno (which I had serious trouble supporting) and the Ninja V which I use now.

Yeah that mount is awesome. Some SmallRig things seem like such a deal, then little components like that are so pricey. Totally worth it though!

I’m so glad to see you still reply to all your comments on this video. I recently got a killer deal on G9 and I’m falling in love with the camera but it has a 10 minute record limit with 4K/60 which I’ve heard I can get around with the Ninja. what I can’t figure out anywhere is how long you can record on the ninja with one battery. Do you happen to have a ballpark idea of how long you could go on that battery without need to stop and swap? Thanks in advance.
@ScottBell
@ScottBell 4 жыл бұрын
Hey, thanks for the comment. The record time on the Ninja 100% depends on the battery size and quality. With a large NPF battery I'd say 60 minutes is your max record time, but probably closer to 30-45 mins in most cases with average quality batteries. The Ninja also comes with a dummy battery that plugs into the wall so you can run it non-stop. You could also look into a v-mount solution. Good luck!

Great to hear! I use manual focus almost exclusively. I occasionally use autofocus in really controlled situations when I need to do a push-in on a gimbal or something. I find it too unreliable to risk it in a situation where I won't get the chance to capture the same moment again.

Hello. I tried the Viltrox. I can't say if it's less sharp than the Metabones, but it did notwork with a manual Rokinon lens which works fine on the Metabones. For that reason alone I decided to spend a bit extra and get the quality Metabones. The Sigma is a bit heavy but I haven't found a need for a lens support. I'm frequently switching to a m43 lens for telephoto shots so having the lens support would be annoying to take off all the time. Thanks for watching!

I have shot a lot of concerts with the GH4 and more recently, the G9, and I use a much more stripped down body than you. Two cams, black rapid, 12-35 and the 35-100. It's just so easy to get well lit footage at the sort of shows I shoot that I don't have any real need to use lenses from other formats. I shoot a lot of bigger shows though, in arenas or outdoor festivals, so I barely have to do any work, I guess.

Thanks, Scott. Can you say what you have the camera's mic setting on when you use the little Rode mic? I most often use other Rode mics for the ambient sound with the camera set to -12db + gain on the external mic. I get the concert audio from the board. Of course, that is not what you were addressing in this video. But we do use the little Rode for B-Roll. Do you have the camera set for auto, since it has no settings on the mic? Do you get much camera motor noise? The next question no one has been able to answer. We are supposed to be able to shoot continuous on the GH5. However, it does spit the concert into about 3 clips during an hour long performance. How can I keep one continuous file so that it is easy to synch with the entire board audio. I am the house photographer at The Freight & Salvage in Berkeley. I often shoot alone running one main camera. on a tripod, while navigating around the venue with a monopod for B-Roll. I would love to run the main camera until intermission. I would be grateful for your response.
@ScottBell
@ScottBell 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Irene, I have my GH5 set to -12 db. There is plenty of volume put out by this tiny mic that this gives me some safety from clipping and I can always raise levels a bit in post if needed. On your second question, there is no way to avoid the file being split up. That said, it's still a continuous recording so you just need to sync the first clip with the audio and the rest can be dropped into the timeline in order following it and everything will be in sync. The only way to avoid this would be to shoot with an external recorder like the Ninja V. Best of luck!

Thanks for watching. I wouldn't really rely on an my on-camera mic for much. If I'm shooting a live band and will be using the audio I would try to get a feed off the mixing board or position a higher quality microphone somewhere in the room and record everything into an external recorder. That said, this mic would probably do alright but not great at picking up bass.

Hey, glad you enjoyed. I shoot in Natural or Vlog depending on the situation. @ScottBell
@ScottBell 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching, glad it was helpful. The low light on this camera is not horrible so long as you don't need everything to be fully exposed in dark situations. You need to use light to your advantage. And having a lens with a very wide aperture like the Sigma 18-35 helps a lot in situations where you need lots of light to get to the sensor. I try to keep my ISO at 800 or lower when possible but will go up to 1200 if needed.

3 questions: 1.) If you have/wish, would you get a cage to incorporate a battery grip? 2.) Could you live with the Shinobi and record internally with the GH5 or would you recommend to skip it and invest in the Ninja V? 3.) Would you use/replace the 35-100mm f2.8 for the Sigma 50-100mm f1.8 if you could?
@ScottBell
@ScottBell 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Chris, Thanks for stopping by. Here are my thoughts on your questions. I hope they are helpful. 1) I debated the battery grip when deciding on a cage and decided to go with something slim. Much of my work is outdoor filmmaking so I'm in the backcountry and want as small of a rig as possible. Adding the battery grip, while nice for continuous shooting, isn't worth the extra bulk for me. I'd rather carry extra batteries and swap them out. Also, I've invested in the Power Junkie that will allow me to run my camera on NP-F batteries if I'm looking for longer runtime. I haven't figured out how this will fit on my rig yet as I'm still waiting for it to arrive. 2) I've looked at a few videos of the Shinobi and it looks nice. That said, it's not THAT much more expensive to get the Ninja V that gives you some options to grow into. In the end it depends on what you need. Recording internal at 400 Mbit is definitely 100% acceptable in terms of great quality footage. You'll just need to transcode the footage to reduce the CPU load during editing. 3) I haven't looked into the Sigma 50-100 at all. On a quick review, it looks big and heavy. As with the battery grip, I'm always balancing rig size with capabilities. I find the Panasonic 35-100 f2.8 suitable for 90% of my situations where I need a telephoto lens in that focal range. If I were to invest in anything at this point it would be a longer lens rather than something with a larger aperture.
@chrisklugh
@chrisklugh 5 жыл бұрын
@@ScottBell Thanks for your feedback! 1) Your probably right. I've always viewed the battery grip as a benefit to make the camera look 'more pro' and to give more battery life for timelaps. However, looks can be just that of my own perspective of what I think they might be thinking and that should not matter. And if I wanted to do long exposures, adding one battery still has its limits. I should look more into the Power Junkie as a better more versatile solution as well. 2) Your right, the differences on the unit itself is not that much. But once you got it your going to want to record to it so I look at the cost of SSD as well as extra batteries to compensate the power needs. Do you find the weight to be any sort of an issue for all day shooting? Have you ever found yourself wishing it was lighter even at the expense of not be able to record? 3) I have the Oly 40-150 f2.8. Its a great lens, but I'm at the point of wishing it were smaller for how often I use it. As neat as the Sig 50-150 looks on paper, I don't see myself using it as often to justify the expense. Maybe I should look into Pany 35-100 f2.8 as well... ... My lens set up that I like: Pany 12-60 f2.8-4 Outdoors with an VND, I find myself shooting at f4 anyways. Sig 18-35 For the same reasons everyone else loves it. Sig 16 f.4 Cause I want a fast lens I can carry with me when I don't plan to use the Sig 18-35. Its too heavy. Oly 40-150 For those long shots Laowa 7.5 for my wide stuff. The point I'm getting at is I feel on m43, f2.8 is too slow for indoors, and f4 insures I get things in focus for run and gun outdoors. I don't use AF.
@ScottBell

The weight of the Ninja V is a bit more than using other small field recorders. It's noticeable for sure. I also have a Feelworld M5a which has a nice display but lacks a touchscreen. If it's a gig where I don't want to risk damaging the Ninja V or I don't need SSD recording I'll use the Feelworld, as it's lighter and cheaper. In terms of f2.8 not being enough to let light in, I guess it depends on what ISO you are comfortable with. I sometimes will use Neat Video in post to clean up really noisy footage. If I stay with Panasonic I will probably eventually get a GH5s as a low light/B Cam and sell my G85.

Amazing review man and incredible footage. I've been struggling to replicate the footage I see online with my GH5 and I feel it's probably due to having the 12-35 f2.8 and it not really letting a lot of light in for indoor/lower light situations.
