Filming GIANT 500 pound Atlantic Bluefin Tuna & Spearfishing for Irish Pollack

I was lucky enough to go to the Republic of Ireland last month working as an underwater camera & drone operator for a TV fishing show. A very humbling experience being able to get so close to these giant Atlantic bluefin tuna and be part of the catch & release tagging programme in Ireland. I even manage to sneak in a brief spearfishing session after work one day for some Irish pollack to feed the crew. If the TV show gets to air you'll be the first to know!
Some links to the tagging programme for those interested.

@Nemrai
@Nemrai 3 жыл бұрын
This is exactly why I think spearfishing is the one method to catch fish that I think is all fine. Because you can pick the fish you want and will be able to dispatch it quickly. Instead of fishing with hook and pole, a net, and so on. That too often prolongs the suffering of the fish. And come with the risk of catching fish and other things you don't want.

Beautiful fish! What is the difference between the Bluefin Tuna and a Yellowfin? The Bluefin also has yellow fins. When I sailed across the Atlantic Ocean we had a 2 meter Tuna swim next to the boat for 10 days (1500 miles). Totally beautiful to watch swimming at 7 knots without even moving it's body!
@DanielMann
@DanielMann 3 жыл бұрын
The yellowfin tuna doesn't handle as cold of water as the Atlantic bluefin tuna. The main difference is the yellowfin tuna have huge yellow sickle like dorsal & anal fins when they get big. Sometimes they go as far back as the caudal fin. Bluefin don't grow this huge fins.
@christophersmith7714
@christophersmith7714 3 жыл бұрын
@@DanielMann thanks for that info. That confirms what I saw was a Yellowfin. At times on that crossing the Atlantic was so calm that there was not even a ripple on it. I have pics of that Tuna where it's like looking into an aquarium. the whole crew fell in love with that Tuna.

@DanielMann
@DanielMann 3 жыл бұрын
You can see a swift slice in the throat section in this video. Very quick and easy to do. You don’t need to hack the gills or totally sever the throat to bleed a fish. Cutting that soft area leads right to the heart and the fish bleeds out very quickly.

Class Video! Just to be in the water beside one of those fish would be amazing, don't think I'd have the stones to actually stick a spear into one. Whatever about other Europeans catching them ,we unfortunately sold out the fishing industry in favour of supporting the farmers to join the EU, there is also a fleet of Japanese longliners which are allowed fish these North Atlantic Tuna each year. There is currently one 55m Japanese vessel sitting just outside the Irish fishing grounds with more probably joining sooner rather than later.

Why do you have that o ring holding your flopper closed? I have one on my Salvimar but I’m afraid it won’t slip off the flopper when I hit the fish and the flopper won’t be able to open. Have you ever had that happen or have that fear as well?

The spear travels too fast for it to stay on there. Never had the problem and thousands of people in the Mediterranean use it daily. It’s not super tight anyways, just enough to hold it closed.

What county is that? Galway? I've caught plenty of pollack on the west coast with my spinning rod, so its nice to see what the underwater terrain looks like. Now I know why I lose so many lures.

Hi mate, they make Nauticam housings for just about every make of camera and lens combination imaginable. Can get a little overwhelming when looking and not to mention expensive. Lucky my work place has the housing.

@@DanielMann true story is that when dayne shot his barrel at the start of my video, he only had his dive knife to cut it up, which is why i said ‘i’d save him and leave it here’ 😂 took about 40mins to half lop the head off, and we couldnt actually get it off, and then one of our mates pulled into the ramp with bigger knives.

Hey Dan, awesome video as always, enjoyed it an extra bit having lived (and dived) in Ireland for a few years myself. Out of curiosity, which lens are you using in that setup? I'm also on a NA-GH5 rig, and after years of using Oly 8mm FE and Oly 12mm f2.0, I'm thinking of getting the dome you have here (guessing it's the 6" dome) and putting a Pana 12-35 f2.8 in there as a great all-around lens. Would love to hear your experience. Cheers!

Hey Ivan, thanks! I have the 7-14mm Panasonic F4 in this one. I worked with a crew in Timor Leste a few years ago and they had the Olympus 7-15mm 2.8 which is a much bigger lens but sharp edge to edge and the extra stops help underwater. You needed adaptors and a 8” port I think. For the Panasonic you only need the 6” port. I own the 12-35mm 2.8 and it’s an amazing lens. Never put it in the housing though but it fits the same dome as the 7-14mm so I might get some gear rings for it in the future. My GH5 will be my underwater rig now as I just got setup with an A7Siii for topside work.

@@DanielMann Thanks! Experimenting with different underwater setups gets very expensive very quick, so this was a valuable insight! Looking forward to see what you do with the GH5 underwater in the future - IMO yourself and David Ochoa might be the best spearo videographers on the internet. Super inspiring! Side note - if you'll ever consider coming to Madeira to chase wahoos, AJs and groupers, let me know, would love to meet and maybe help out with some B roll. Cheers!

Thanks Ivan but David Ochoa is on another planet compared to my work! It’s so damn good. I’ve shot a bit of stuff on the channel with the GH5, mostly in the U.K. Just remembered the 12-35mm might not be wide enough underwater depending on what you’re doing. It’s a 24-70mm full frame equivalent. I tend to use the 7-14mm (16-35mm FFE) at the 7-10mm end mostly. Depends on the water clarity I guess.

@@DanielMann I have the lens you saw in Timor Leste (it's Oly 7-14 f2.8) but it would cost me an arm and a leg to put it behind a glass dome port and an extension ring. I mostly film orcas and humpbacks and 12mm worked great for that, I want to go longer to zoom in on the fish and get more bokeh. More research follows :) Thanks again, cheers!
