Extremely underrated movie. It's one of Tom Cruise's best performances. The atmosphere of the movie is really cool, it keeps you engaged in the story.

The woman who fainted at the end reveal was the killer's wife, so it's not so far fetched that it would be so shocking for her to find out her husband is a murderer.

I always find it interesting that it's implied that if Tom Cruise's character hadn't seen the future "murder" (even though it was more an accident than a murder) he committed, the "murder" never would have happened. His knowing about the future is what makes the future the future he saw

Based on the work of the sci-fi author Philip K Dick, other movies that have used his work are Blade Runner, and Total Recall. The best example of his work put to screen is the animated movie A Scanner Darkly, which will blow your mind.

It's interesting though that you said at the beginning that you're not expecting it to be any more than just a blockbuster, yet through the course of the film you had a difficult time simply digesting it as one. Spielberg envisioned the film as a Whodunit, or in his own words, "Whowilldoit". I'm surprised that you didn't comment on the shot at 20:55. I remember critics geeking out about that along w/ the camerawork in the spider robot sequence. The scene w/ the balloons is meant to show that a psychic is able to exploit convenient situations. The cops were looking around all over the mall, but Agatha is able to pick a temporary blind spot b/c she's way ahead of them no matter what they do.

The scene where the warden says ""It's actually kind of a rush. They say you have visions. That your life flashes before your eyes. That all your dreams come true" gives people the impression that the last act of the film takes place in John's head while he's locked away.

That song the "nurse" and eye doctor is singing is called Little frogs it's a Swedish song we sing at midsummer, Spielberg thought it sounded creepy and had them do it

This is a nice little detective "who done it" story wrapped in a sci-fi package. It honestly reminded me of those old TV shows from the 50s. I used to love those type of spy/detective shows.

I think it was amazing that Spielberg did Minority Report and Catch Me If You Can within the same year. A heck of a one-two punch. I also liked that the future world of Minority Report felt lived in.

I like the fact that you have the courage to say you were a bit let down from this movie. I could tell throughout your reaction that you weren't fully into it, which is obviously fine. The movie's style is a bit wacky, like as if people in the far future are a bit 'off', perhaps because of the impact of technology on mentality. It's Spielberg just having fun, and as you said it was a blockbuster type, not a deep psychological inspection. Ngl I'm a bit disappointed you didn't love it because it's one of my favourite movies ever, but glad you have the courage to say how you honestly feel. A lot of reactor's just say they love everything to guarantee the likes. Fuck that shit.

This is high on my list for one of my fav Spielberg films of all time, it’s so masterfully done and creative and looks absolutely amazing

A classic for me; this movie started my fascination & appreciation with everything Philip K. Dick!

Just finished my Sophomore year of College. This is a great way to relax. I actually thought Colin Farrell was American when I first watched this.

Fun fact: Minority Report and Star Wars Ep. II were in production at pretty much the same time, so Spielberg an Lucas, being best friends, were juggling the creative ideas around, and one of them had an idea about an action scene at the automatic assembly line with the heroes caught in the works of the place, so both films have very similar sequences, one in the car factory, the other at the smelter plant of some kind.

The thing I love about this movie is that it fully fleshes out futurist ideas of how transportation, police equipment, advertising would look like and how it's used. You can really see how that could exist.

One of the cool things is that we have this tech already, it's just commonplace in the film. We have self driving cars and here in the UK the Navy and rescue services are using jetpacks regularly

From what I recall, it's an extension of a short story and it feels like it. There are too many empty calories here, even though it does a good job with the sense of place. It didn't make the edit but the moment when Agatha shouts "RUN" still gives me chills. So many of my nightmares end with that kind of weirdness.

Tbh the take away from this as a film maker should be "orgy of evidence". That term really stuck with me through the years.

You might enjoy the movie Equilibrium; starring g Christian Bale and Sean Beam, the movie is a sci-fi action film that is a modern retelling of 1984. I think you'd especially appreciate the color grading and composition shots within it.

The point is, that there is no knowing the future there is only knowing possibilities . Peaking into the future has always been a concept but to be able to change it is where the future loses all validity. Think if you plan to go somewhere tomorrow then you have an idea of the future but it is not set in stone it can change. The only thing that can’t be changed is the past.

Phil Dick had Blade Runner (1982) in his wallet just before he passed. I remember when he was scraping just to pay the bills. He never did get to feel the full embrace of Hollywood before his ending. Best. Leo.

Yoooooo!! I'm super early today, but this is an all time film for me. Spielberg and the producers consulted with actual engineers and scientists for all the technological aspects. I really hope we have highways like that in the future. No more damn gridlock!!!! Lol.

You actually make a good point that never crossed my mind before. I've always enjoyed this movie quite a bit, but like you said, there was potential to do EVEN MORE with this brilliant concept. Unfortunately, big budget blockbuster films have to balance action sequences with story telling so they're not able to give the psychological aspects their full attention most of the time because of time and money. Had it been an independent film, they might have explored the concept more and dove deeper into the psyche of it.

I appreciate your honesty about the movie. I genuinely felt I learned something from your critique. I think when I first saw the movie it was kind of the opposite, because I went in expecting a blockbuster-type action movie and was surprised by the "cerebral" elements (also the mystery and plot twisty elements). It makes sense that if you were expecting or looking forward to something cerebral, you would feel let down by all the focus on action and not more on the thought-provoking stuff. A lot Philip K. Dick stories get adapted into action movies to appease a broader audience. Great reaction!

Not expecting the arty storytelling eh??? Well sit back & enjoy my brother, you just might be surprised! Spielberg’s most underrated films and one of his best in my opinion.

If you think about it, this is technically a time travel movie-it’s just information travelling in time, not people. And part of the tension of the film is whether they exist in a fixed time loop (what precogs see MUST happen) or a branching timeline (what precogs see MAY happen). Also: Samantha Morton as Agatha has always been the standout performance in this for me. Her physical acting, especially in the scene with Crow, is really on another level. Also also: Your Max von Sydow impression is 10/10, daaaaaaamn

After a lull in the 90s, a bunch of Philip K. Dick stories were adapted to film and released in the aughts: "A Scanner Darkly", "Minority Report", "Imposter", "Paycheck", and "Next". So Colin Farrell's been in two PKD adaptations, so far: The newer Total Recall and this Minority Report.

I also love that written by the same author as blade runner. Philip k dick is responsible for some of the best sci-fi books and movies of our generation.

This is one of my favorite Spielberg films. You can just see his steady hand behind the entire thing. He knew exactly what he wanted and he delivered.

Fun fact: Steven Spielberg convened a panel of experts from various fields (robotics, software, architecture, etc.) to make the future technology as plausible as possible. Many of the technologies shown have come true or are the verge of being true like automated cars, personalized advertising, eye and gesture recognition software, touch interfaces. Even crime prediction software is being used in some cities. The film has proved downright prophetic. The only exception are the jet packs. Jet packs that last more than a few minutes are impossible, Spielberg knew this and included them anyway as an homage to old school science fiction.

This movie just oozes with atmosphere. I love the overexposed film grain look, fits so perfectly with the story, themes, and setting. One of my favorite Tom Cruise movies, even if some bits freaked me out as a kid. Every time I rewatch it as an adult, I can't help but utter "this is so goooood!".

Another Great Movie you should watch is V for Vendetta.

Thanks for reacting to this! Phillip K. Dick's work has been, and continues to be, a treasure trove for filmmakers. I am a huge fan of his brain and how it works. I've always had mad nostalgia for this movie, in particular, because it mentions the *very* specific neighborhood in DC (Barnaby Woods) that I grew up in.

minority report was written by the same author who wrote the stories for total recall, bladerunner, a scanner darkly, screamers, and the adjustment bureau.

This movie was based on a Phillip K. Dick short story, like Blade Runner (that was a novel), Total Recall, Impostor, A Scanner Darkly, etc. All these stories share a common plot: the protagonist is at the center of a system (Precrime, in Minority Report; Rekall, in Total Recall; an undercover police investigation, as in A Scanner Darkly; a war, in Impostor) and then the system turns against the protagonist (Precrime hunts John Anderton; Doug Quaid is chased by the bad guys as soon as he discovers his new identity, etc).

It's been like almost 20 years since I watch this movie in theater. The air blaster scene is still cool as hell.

This is one of those movies that people like to say the end is all a dream. More specifically, Cruise's character dreaming in the stasis prison. I always thought that was giving the script too much credit.

the big thing with this movie was the tech, it was 2002 and we are now seeing some of this tech in 2020 fwd. Steven gathered 12 of the brightest engineers together in france and had them brainstorm as to what they thought we would see in the future in tech, like the retinal scanning spiders, and the ability to see through a building for body heat. pretty amazing.

One amazing shot is the elevator one. John is acting weird but agent Witwer ignores it because he's in no danger, but then the "there's gonna be a murder" alarm is set off and Colin Farrell's face goes from smug to scared. Because yeah, grave harm isn't something that happens in this world.

I agree with you, and haven't noticed before, how the plot is defined to fit the path of a roller coaster which always returns to the same point, instead of going on a journey - a path that leads elsewhere. I enjoy watching special effects but what does it take to include the heart and mind on the journey as well? Annihilation is a film that leaves you in new territory as it ends. Andromeda Strain as well leaves you thinking and wondering. 2001 ends with a big round blue embryo right next to a big round blue earth. I was ten years old when my parents took me to see that film( God bless my parents they took me to a lot of movies) and I understood right then and there that humanity is young and growing. Even at the end of Saving Private Ryan, when Capt Miller is dying and looks up and says to Ryan " earn this", he is talking to the audience as he says it to Ryan. I enjoyed seeing Minority Report again, I do love a wild ride, but when the original movie War of the Worlds ends I feel a sense of accomplishment because of the script and soundtrack and images have created a little plateau to stand on.

Now, all you have to do is wait for the original story rights to become extant and someone, maybe you, will choose a better direction for the narrative. Personally do really like this film, but I also can see where you're coming from with the criticisms you gave. I do think the movie could be better considering the concept, but I do also really enjoy the action. The twist was a bit too heavy handed tho... would've been nicer if it was more subtle.

I have no idea if there is a connection, just putting it out there... The premise the tv show Angel opens with in season 1 is a precog has a vision and Angel prevents the bad in the vision.

Some of the Retina scans done in this movie is the charging sound of the first iPhones before the iPhones came out. Also the first time I saw Max von Sydow in this movie , it made me think about the make up artists who were involved with the The exorcist. He looked like he did in the exorcist lol

The universe of _Minority Report_ is plentiful! I don't think a sequel would have fully explored all the avenues that were left unexplored in this movie, but imagine a spinoff, TV series of all those years the precrime experiment was fully operational. I dream with seeing that some day.

So Cruise does the ball catch demo for Farrell in order to demonstrate how sure he was about pre crime. He was saying that his team is the hand catching the ball but the visions are gravity. That they're definitely going to happen. The fact that things aren't that solid doesn't occur to him because he's only experienced it in one context. Basically he had cop brain about it. When you're a hammer everything is a nail.

I like how the cop is stuck in the past and the pre-cog is sort of stuck in the future. Like you said, my man, it really is a interesting dynamic.I just wish they explored more of that and got deeper into what they were thinking and feeling.

Agatha's actress, Samantha Morton goes on to play the lady that takes care/abuses Credence and is anti-magic in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. When I saw her in that film, it took me a bit but recognizing her as Agatha in this movie was pretty cool.

You really need to do a reaction series for Altered Carbon. One of the best sci-fi shows in terms of atmosphere and setting.

The scene in the first part where he's rewatching his past tapes made me remember that there's another movie that I really recommend for you to watch, it's Strange Days by Kathryn Bigelow, it's another cyberpunkish movie with a lot of social commentary (the director had the idea of the movie after the Los Angeles riots of 1992 that took place after the beating of Rodney King by police officers). It was extremely relevant back then and it's still is today after all that happened (and unfortunately still happens) nowadays with police brutality, but the movie also kind of predict not social media but the way we sort of live our lives through a screen and not actually in person. It's a really awesome movie with a terrific cast and awesome ost as well. :)

It's worth noting that this movie's vision of future technology was remarkably prescient. It was released in 2002, five years before the first iPhone. Minority Report showcases swipe controls, iris ID, facial recognition, targeted ads, use of big data, augmented reality, virtual reality and autonomous cars. Yes it's still sci-fi. But some of these concepts didn't even seem like they were in the near-future at the time the movie released.

I appreciate seeing a more critical take on a film I very much enjoyed when I was much younger. I think on rewatch elements of the story might not hold up as well. And of course the central premise is fantasy. But what I think is on point, and which we might take for granted watching it today, as opposed to the early 2000s, is the setting. The idea of ads knowing who you are and talking directly to you is just reality today. But in 2002 it was science fiction. Unfortunately, the lack of privacy Spielberg envisioned has largely come true, but in much more insidious and less overt ways.

Because of this movie, I started checking out the author Philip K. Dick and realized how many major films are based on his works including Blade Runner. The original short story Minority Report is really interesting.
