@@JamesVSCinema I also appreciated this shout out, as a longtime fan of Jaye Davidson. He was nominated for an Oscar for his performance in The Crying Game, which I don't believe you have seen yet. It's a one of a kind film and I think you'd be absolutely blown away by it. I think Davidson is a highly underrated actor, and it kinda sucks he left the business, but I get why. He looks so buff these days too. It's wild that he had this androgynous look as a young person, and developed into this sexy looking dad he is today. I think he's just... beauty. That simple.

James, regardless of whether or not you record reactions to it, I would encourage you to watch Stargate SG1. It's a great show with a cast that has amazing chemistry, excellent writing, and who's creators go out of their way to incorporate as much real world science as possible, despite the show being based on entirely theoretical physics. But as great as all that is, what really drives the series home is the humor, which is a perfect blend of wit and sarcasm, nods to other franchises, as well as plenty of self aware and self deprecating humor.

I don't know if you'd ever be into making one of those "1st and last episode" type videos, but if you don't have plans to ever watch this series, episode 200 of SG-1 is pretty close to the "end" and it's a writers' hey-day of spoof after spoof interpretation of what they decided *not* to do w the series - all in the name of creating an in-universe movie that allows for plausible deniability of its existence. This used to be such an underrated movie. Back when it came out, it didn't get the respect from general audiences that it deserved. It's my favorite movie by the Devlin/Emmerich duo. Sci-fi, but wholesome sci-fi with a sense of adventure. Instead of just about blowing shit up, this movie really had a great amazing story/premise (and demonstrated by the number of shows born from it), and the characters had great depth to them. Just a super well written classic. My roommate hated this when we saw it in theaters, but it was an instant classic to me.

@@amazingusername8925 You’re right that it was a hit. It grossed close to $200 million back when $100 million was still considered to be the mark of success. But I think it was underrated. I was in college at the time, and my friends and I felt it was underwhelming. That’s because it was marketed as “the next Star Wars,” so it wasn’t exactly what we were expecting. In retrospect, it’s a great film. And I think the “next Star Wars” hype did it a disservice.

Very fascinating guy and great conversation about what it took to do so much of the sets and sci-fi elements on a practical level. "Soldier" is a terrific movie with a great supporting cast, too. I have read that it takes place in the same universe as "Blade Runner". In an early trash field scene, we can see one of the police cars from that classic, scrapped on Soldier's new planet. The fact there's a lot of thought behind all the tech, how the ships are designed, etc. but admittedly all shows suffer from the same problem: their first two or three seasons suck. Mostly. There are good episodes in there, but most are pretty bad. I have no idea why it's so consistent with Trek shows, but it is and most people agree on that. About Daniel picking up the language. We don’t actually know what Ancient Egyptian sounded like because they never wrote down vowels, so the best they can do is make educated guesses based on similar languages. Daniel is speaking words by pointing at things, and Shau’ri is correcting his pronunciation. He even says that all he needed to do was figure out the vowels to be able to speak it
@caomhan84

Shau'ri (changed in the TV series to Sha're)...not Shawty hahaha. As others have said, the TV show (which evolved into a 3-show franchise and 17 seasons of TV) expands on this concept a HELL of a lot. They take the whole "ancient aliens" concept and run with it to a really cool degree. I both love it and miss it. Stargate needs to return....hopefully Amazon will make that happen soon. They've been trying to get a new show together for a few years now.

@@chuckshingledecker2216 I understand, but this will be the original people. This isn't going to be an all new team of people that don't know what they're doing (like with LOTR). It's going to be Brad Wright assembling the cast and the writers just like it was 2006 again. Carter in command. The Stargate program is public knowledge. Daniel's back. If this gets made, I honestly don't think it's going to be the same situation as giving the keys to the franchise to someone new and woke.

Did you notice that one of the lead soldiers was played by French Stewart? In the 1990s & 2000s, he was in a great sitcom about four aliens come to Earth to study us: "Third Rock from the Sun". French Stewart was absolutely brilliant as the idiot of the team. The child of the team was played by a very young Joseph Gordon Levitt -- a big movie star, now -- and the High Commander by the amazing John Lithgow, who later on was one of the scariest bad guys ever on "Dexter". As for your conjecture whether this movie's Daniel remains on the newfound planet, with his beloved Shauri'i, well, that was the subject of the debut episode of the TV series "Stargate SG-1". It lasted a full ten years and could have kept going. In terms of action but especially of the characters, this was the best Science Fiction TV show since the original "Star Trek" in the 60s. Only 2002's 'Firefly" offered us better, more relatable and enjoyable character interactions. "SG-1" was a fantastic show, spawning a couple of other series and a couple of one-off TV movies that were very good.

I've never heard anyone refer to movies having "texture" before, it's a very interesting way of phrasing it. 11:00 A detail that you seem to have missed is that they WOULDN'T have gone through the gate if Daniel hadn't promised that he'd be able to turn it back on and get them home and that he never said a word about needing to find anything in order to do that. Daniel lied to them when he said he was sure he could do it, because he didn't KNOW the symbols would be there, he ASSUMED they would. Granted, having a mini tantrum and throwing someone else's stuff around isn't the best way to handle the situation, but the guy does have a valid reason to be pissed.

The actor that plays Ra is named Jaye Davidson, he has only been in one other movie called The Crying Game (1992), which he got a lot of attention for before this came out. If you haven't already seen it you really should.

In the end, Stargate became a very enjoyable and popular series thanks to SG:1 and Atlantis. It was a good example of an original concept, which is what we sorely need these days. An original story, not a remake or a reboot of a pre-existing franchise.

This is one of my favorite scifi films from the 90s, it felt like a perfect mix of green screen, a little CGI and practical effects. When this released, a friend of mine managed a theater and let a group of us watch before opening night, the night before at 12. It was an old school theater with one single big screen an an opera house design to it, though it had been updated with new screens, projectors and surround sound (latest tech for that time)...so it was already a really cool place to see a movie. It was incredible seeing it on that big screen with no distractions like others talking or heads in the way or any of that. We were in awe of the big, expansive scenes. It had the look of a film from the 60s, back when they were all really big productions with huge budgets and ridiculously massive and detailed sets and attire. One that comes to mind would be Cleopatra, with Richard Burton and Liz Taylor. Also a great one, even though it is a little over 4 hours long. Love your reactions and comments, it really is cool to see someone in all these reaction channels who is in tune with a film maker's point of view. Please keep it up!

One of the best throwbacks to this movie I saw was in the TV Show "Leverage". Leon Rippy, who plays the General in this movie was in several episodes of that show. In his personal vault in that show, there were several tiles with the Stargate Chevrons on them on the back wall of the vault.

I just came back from a 2 week trip to Egypt and I kept asking locals if they’ve watched this.. they’d never even heard of it! Some things I didn’t pick up before: there’s no such thing as “the eye of Ra” it’s the eye of Horus, the falcon god of protection (same symbol used in the movie though) and the dog masks worn by the guards is a depiction of Anubis, god of death/mummification. These probably don’t symbolize anything in the film though, they just look cool! I also think you’d LOVE traveling to Egypt!!

The transition into the TV series Stargate SG-1 is really cool and brings a lot of fun characters. It's not all great viewing, and it's got that 90's TV vibe to it that is an acquired taste, but some of the ideas they explore are pretty interesting and fun.

I have to echo others here. The SG-1 Franchise is one of the pinnacles of Sci Fi television and worth watching, the depth of the show, it's character development and it's story make it worth every minute. The Air Force made Richard Dean Anderson an honorary Brigadier General because of the show for godsakes. It's THAT monumental.

@@weepingscorpion8739 the problem is, after SG-1 and Atlantis, the gritty, depressing tone didnt really fit Stargate-theme at least for me. Also the writing didnt help, even tho great actors, all the characters were extremely unsimpathetic and i couldnt root for any of them, and it tried to be too political (as power stuggle etc. like BSG, which Stargate was never about, 90% of the beef was with aliens not other earth people or within SGC)..real shame, the show had incredible potential, with the concept of time frame when they can get on and off the planet, the new interesting aliens, technologies, etc. it couldve deliver the best show out of them 3 but failed because it tried too hard to not be Stargate-ish

When I watched this as a kid I just assumed that Ra had sabotaged the bomb so that the countdown couldn't be deactivated once started. Rewatching the movie now, I think the more likely answer is that the military (Kurt's bosses) pulled that trick on the expeditionary force, not Ra. It fits the theme of hidden motivations that underlies this script.

Thank you so much for this reaction! It's really great. I loved your takes and excitement over this amazing film. You showed so much appreciation for everything I love about it. And, 🤣🤣🤣, "dripped out". 🤣😁 Again, I appreciate your excitement! Also, wonderful edit! Giving screentime and making a comment here and there but not taking away from the film. Hate to compare but people are reacting to these moves--babbling all over the movie with unrelated nonsense and wild, dead-wrong theories about the direction of the plot. They might as well show the movie poster and run their mouth for 45 minutes. PLEASE, keep making these reactions! Reapect! 😎

20:00 Kurt Russel's character Jack was sent to Abados (the planet) as a fail-safe. His orders were to detonate the nuke at the gate if any threat was found that could threaten Earth. They picked him for the mission because he was suspected of being suicidal already, but his patriotism made him trustworthy to carry out the mission. There's a deleted scene that showed the bird head guys encased in stone and that the brass was already aware that there was something weird on the other side

Jaye Davidson hated the fame he garnered after The Crying Game so much that when the producers came to him to appear in Stargate, he gave them an offer so high that they had to refuse -- $1 Mil. To his surprise, they accepted the offer.

A couple fun facts. Originally, the movie INDEPENDENCE DAY as a concept was going to be a sequel to this movie, with the aliens coming to Earth for revenge years later. But that changed and instead ID became its own movie while Stargate was continued in TV shows. A popular Doctor Who TV story in 1975 called "Pyramids of Mars" also used the idea that Egyptian mythology and design styles were based on their encounters with powerful aliens.

I loved this movie! The casting g was great. Kurt Russell, James Spader, French Stewart, Leon Rippy and a young Djimon Hounsou to name a few. I was mesmerized by the incredible eyes of Mili Avital . This movie eventually led to, in my opinion, one of the best Sci-fi franchises, Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis. Both Alexis Cruz(Skaara)and Erick Avari(Kasuf Skaara & Sha'uri' s father) reprised their roles in he TV series.
