Great advice! I did similar stuff for a webseries pilot for a talk show. I got a soda pop maker and potato chip maker as sponsors as well as a nightclub. The nightclub was where the pilot was shot and I was given free use of it on Sundays (they weren't open on Sundays) for all the test shoots and then the filming of the pilot. And if the show had gone forward (it didn't for reasons not related to the sponsors), the owner would have let me use his club every Sunday for free. The owner even PAID an employee to come in for all the test shoots and pilot and help however they could. The soda pop maker and potato chip maker both sent me free BIG cases of their products for me to use on camera. Both offered to send me as much of their stuff as I wanted. I jokingly said to the marketing rep of the potato chip maker, "How about enough bags for a big mound that me and my guests then sit on for the show?" She laughed and said, "Sure!" I said, "Really?" She said, "You bet!" I didn't take her up on that offer but she was serious. Both companies (soda and potato) offered to pay me money for including them in the pilot but I turned them down since I didn't need it and because I didn't want to burn negotiating capital on that but instead on getting paid a certain amount for every 1,000 downloads of the episodes. The only words of advice I would add to what your interviewee said are: 1) If you are going to make your project available on KZfaq, do NOT ask for a one-time set amount of money but get them to commit to paying you a certain amount per 1,000 downloads. That will pay you more in the long run. 2) Keep things as local as possible. Local businesses like helping local projects. And that can be major corporations. Local just means their corporate headquarters is within a 50 miles of you. 3) Include ONE link to past work you've done in the initial short email. That proves to them that you've made something in the past, enables them to see the quality of work you've done (and thus will do for them), and that this isn't vapor ware.
