Filmmaker Wes Anderson recalls the initial test screening of his now cult classic "Bottle Rocket." Every review card from the audience read negative, save for one, and it looked like an "outline of a dissertation." Anderson remembers thinking, "This is our audience!"
-----
LIVE from the NYPL presents an evening with director Wes Anderson ("Rushmore," "The Royal Tenenbaums") in conversation with screenplay co-writer Noah Baumbach ("The Squid and the Whale") about "Fantastic Mr. Fox," Wes Anderson's first animated film. In "Fantastic Mr. Fox," Wes Anderson utilizes classic handmade stop-motion techniques to tell the story of the classic children's book by Roald Dahl.
Mr. and Mrs. Fox (George Clooney and Meryl Streep) live an idyllic home life with their son Ash (Jason Schwartzman) and visiting young nephew Kristofferson (Eric Anderson). But after twelve years of quiet domesticity, the bucolic existence proves too much for Mr. Fox's wild animal instincts. Soon he slips back into his old ways as a sneaky chicken thief and in doing so, endangers not only his beloved family, but the whole animal community...
The film is produced by Allison Abbate, Scott Rudin, Wes Anderson and Jeremy Dawson.
Wes Anderson is the Director, Co-writer and Producer of "Fantastic Mr. Fox." He was born in Houston, Texas and attended college at the University of Texas at Austin. He is the director and co-writer of "Bottle Rocket," "Rushmore," "The Royal Tenenbaums," "The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou," "The Darjeeling Limited" and the short "Hotel Chevalier."
Noah Baumbach is the co-writer of "Fantastic Mr. Fox." He wrote and directed "Margot at the Wedding," "The Squid and the Whale," and "Kicking and Screaming." With Wes Anderson, he co-wrote "The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou" and he is a contributor to The New Yorker magazine's "Shouts and Murmurs" department. His latest film, "Greenberg," was released in 2010 by Focus Features.

Two of my all-time favorite, hilarious movies are Bottle Rocket and The Big Lebowski (the theaters were empty when I saw Lebowski twice), and both of them bombed in the theaters. Shows you what audiences know.

To be honest, i can't actually imagine a person like him to exist. He must be leading a very happy existence, a sort of life to the fullest. I mean, it looks like he has a lot of courage to do unique things, a lot of curiosity and everything just works out...I wish i could live like that.

I don’t care how old you are. It’s never too late to start doing it NOW. If you know what you want, be relentless and passionate about it, and be eager to improve. Social anxiety is a bitch, I know. But your passion will be your sunscreen, and you’ll just push onward…because it’s your passion. I hope you do this. I really do.

I have watched Bottle Rocket 7-8 times, and will watch it again this summer. One of the greatest dialogue movies of all time. I use lines all the time: "What has Grace ever done with her life that's so impressive?" "How did and asshole like Bob ever get such a great kitchen?" "You gotta get me one of those cool jumpsuits!" Brilliant!

This bit is really insightful.. It's nice to be able to live in a society where movies can be made for a niche audience. "This is our audience!" Sweet. I can imagine Wes consciously making his later films even more tailored to the "smarter than's." My recollection of Bottle Rocket is that it's pretty much a bare bones caper movie. It's my least favourite of his films, but it might very well be the most "Wessian."

He seems confident in himself and what he is saying and what he is doing. I'm working on a re-make of the short of 'Bottle Rocket' and would love feedback of it when I'm finished in terms of you think I did right and liked, and what you think I did wrong and/or took away from keeping your attention.

"Rushmore" is a comedic masterpiece. "Royal Tenenbaums" too. I don't know where you get off saying his movies don't make sense. They're very clear.
