Love hearing talk about shooting these kind of videos. It's not sexy work but there's a lot of it out there. I went from live college sports to doing corporate video, so the hardest part of doing this sort of event is staying focused. It's so easy for a person to move and ruin your shot without you even noticing.

Thanks for the tips! I'll be using them to take my video production up a notch. I cover local government meetings (usually indoor) and civic events (political debates, outdoor ceremonies, parades, etc) and have just put everything together so I can add a second camera. I'll be shooting most everything live through an ATEM Mini Pro with onboard SD Cards as backups in case things go wrong.

Thanks we shoot live stream every Sunday for church and even though you said these tips were not particularly for live stream they are still very good - thanks again and God Bless

It's the same idea for live stream but you can't make a mistake on live stream ;)

Thanks for this video! I used to do imag for concerts and livestreams for corporate events and there’s basically no youtube info on how to think about this type of filming!

This is great! I do a lot of this type of shooting for schools and theatre productions. Either cutting live and fixing small errors in post or doing the full cut in post. It's so nice to learn from you and also have confirmation that what I am doing is what other professionals are doing as well. I have multiple sony professional camcorders and we always record on camera and if we directing and cutting live then I use a hyperdeck and a sony mixing desk to record the cut. Also use wireless comms to direct cam ops. I love directing and vision mixing live.

Hold on... There are still Sizzler restaurants around? God, I haven't seen one in, like, 20 years...

You mention shooting wider to avoid framing errors. When editing in post, do you ever use digital zoom?

Oh yes. See this video for one! But for the types of videos Im talking about in this video I don't tend to do much to the image other than color correction

If your peaks are under -20 doesn't that leave your average level close to the noise floor? Or are most mic pres quiet enough that it doesn't matter?

Nope not with 24bit. You still have 120dB to go before you get to the theoretically limit... And you'll hit room noise long before that.

@@FilmmakerIQwell that's what I mean, it seems like the gain would be awfully close to the noise floor. Even the best pres and ADCs have noise well above -120

Couple things to understand what I'm saying, room noise is not ADC internal noise. Even when recording with average peaks at -20dB, the room noise is still going to be much higher than internal noise because the room noise scales down as you gain down. So in post you apply a compressor and do a 20ish dB makeup (I usually only no 12 or 16). It's only 20ish dB of 120dB range (remember dB is a log scale, not linear) Even if you are generous and and say your dynamic range is only 90dB before you get to internal noise, that's the difference between a mosquito buzzing 3m away and nightclub. It's a huge range. Here is a video where I demo recording a circular saw and a whisper... And you can't make out ADC noise: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/r5OPp5Vol-DaeIU.htmlsi=lg6GbzUxJaiNoK9B

@@FilmmakerIQ OK so basically even room noise isn't enough to be a problem...which is impressive, I don't like being close to any floor :)

I think you missunderstand. Room noise is the noise from the room. It's the sound of the HVAC system, the wind outside, the hum of every day life. That will always be louder than the systems noise floor by a considerable amount. The ratio of your desired sound to room noise is a function of mic placement NOT gain.
