Jason Satterlund is an award winning film director who has been working on films for over 25 years. He has extensive experience in all areas of production including directing, producing, writing, cinematography, and editing. He works all over the world directing, commercials, documentaries, music videos, and feature films.
Early on he developed his skills as a storyteller and uses them to this day on projects as diverse as sci-fi steampunk action films, high end commercials, underwater sea life in the tropics, television shows, top country music artists in Nashville, Tenn, and feature films. He is the only person ever to conduct a night shoot in the ancient city of Petra, and the first person in America to use film lenses on an HD camera.
Satterlund has done extensive work for clients such as Warner Brothers, Bon Jovi, Amazon, Microsoft, Jack White, CNN, Hallmark Entertainment, ABC, and the country of Jordan.
He is creator and director of the award winning feature film, "The Record Keeper," which premiered at the Raindance Film Festival in London, and won the first annual Geekie Awards.
Satterlund's latest film THE ABANDON (written by Dwain Worrell) features a wounded soldier awakening in a strange cube that tests his physical and mental limits as he attempts to find a way to escape against a ticking clock.

Stuff we use:
LENS - Most people ask us what camera we use, no one ever asks about the lens which filmmakers always tell us is more important. This lens was a big investment for us and one we wish we could have made sooner. Started using this lens at the end of 2013 - amzn.to/2tbtmOq
AUDIO
Rode VideoMic Pro - The Rode mic helps us capture our backup audio. It also helps us sync up our audio in post amzn.to/2t1n2hx
Audio Recorder - If we had to do it all over again, this is probably the first item we would have bought - amzn.to/2tbFlM9
LIGHTS - Although we like to use as much natural light as we can, we often enhance the lighting with this small portable light. We have two of them and they have saved us a number of times - amzn.to/2u5UnHv
COMPUTER - Our favorite computer, we each have one and have used various models since 2010 - amzn.to/2t1M67Z
EDITING - We upgraded our editing suite this year and we’re glad we did! This has improved our workflow and the quality of our work. Having new software also helps when we have a problem, it’s easy to search and find a solution - goo.gl/56LnpM

One of the things that I have learned is that you can only rely on yourself to make your vision come true. Once your dream requires the consent and participation of other people, you will often be let down. Should things be that way? Absolutely not, but that’s reality. The difficult thing about filmmaking is that it requires the consent and participation of so many people, and unfortunately, no one will ever care about your vision as much as you.

What a great interview. He definitely suffered for his art. Not to make light of what he went through, but the way he persevered and what he learned is inspiring to make his dreams come true.

FINALLY!!! ANOTHER FILMMAKER!!! I love this channel for the interviews with actually filmmakers. Unfortunately 95% of the interviews are not with genuine filmmakers but with writers. Writing and filmmaking are two different modes of thinking. Courage to make a movie and "courage" to write a movie are two different kinds of courage. I have to wait once or twice out the month for an actually director to be interviewed. But its always worth it.

I’m planning on shooting my first feature film this year and this was just the video I needed. Right on point! I could have listened to him for another hour. I just wished he would have talked about how he raised the $12K like practical ways to raise funds would be very helpful. But it was an amazing video. Wish me luck for my film 🤲🏾✨

This is truly inspiring and made me emotional. To not let a "defeat" be the defining moment in one´s life. And yet it is so easy to do without knowing it, since we often disguise our retreats to oursleves, rationalising our dreams away, one willingly blindfolded lifechoice at a time. Thank you Jason for showing your naked truth and thank you film courage for making that happen. When I feel inspired by hearing the war and tear of your story, I know that Im not deluding myself for constantly coming back to wanting to make films. Great video.

He made me remember my first film, the pain it was to get it funded and made, the great void left behind once it was finished and the ardous process of starting all over again. The circle of getting in love with a project give all you have to it and then get your heart broken every single time is just amazing. Makes me want to shoot a film right now.

I have a question for any filmmakers that may come across my comment, do you feel social media has aided you greatly in the process of making a movie or just facilitated getting a film off the ground in any way? I meant bc of “networking”

Hey, nobody is going to give you money until you can say you have so and so attached. So it would seem to me it is a chicken and egg situation. I think you have to get a few key people to sign letters of intent based on the script or synopsis or whatever, maybe a teaser. You show that to investors.
