@Dragon King Acnologia It is not. Already been compared and the Sony 4k disc release is better still, plus it has most or all of the Criterion special features (given that they just licensed them from Sony in the first place).

I saw Lawrence several times on 70mm; on original roadshow release in Chicago, when the restoration was released and when Roger Ebert showed the movie at the Egyptian Theater in Champaign Illinois. Very impressive. Lean said the movie's look was influenced by Ford's "The Searchers".

@@chrisd6736 Other smaller outfits like Shout! and Blue Underground are already releasing 4k discs. Kino has too. Even Tammy and the T-Rex by an even smaller company is being released on 4k Blu-ray. Now, Arrow is getting into the mix. Since 4k discs are not region locked, they can be imported. Criterion is fast becoming a has-been.

Criterion just announced their first blu ray 4k UHD titles coming in November 2021 I believe, seven films to start with.

Filmed on Super Panavision-70. These types of films make for the very best transfers to the 4K Blu-ray format. I saw Lawrence of Arabia on 70mm a few years ago on a 55 foot curved screen projected from a Norelco AA-II projector. That's the best this masterpiece will ever look. Thanks for the video, Jeff!

Fun fact: I believe all 70mm prints that are projected commercially are sourced from an 8K remaster.

I’m excited to hear how it looks. Back in the 90’s I worked at a movie theatre n they brought it back out in 70 mm it looked unbelievable. Peter O Toole’s eyes were so blue they popped out at u in the screen. Thank u for the review

It was photographed only one way, in 65mm Panavision with no anamorphic squeeze. It was shot with a Ratio of 2.2 to 1 with spherical lenses with 65 mm Mitchell Cameras on Eastman 65mm color film stock processed by Technicolor.

If you like classics, Universal is coming out with a Hitchcock 4k deluxe edition of an assortment of top Universal distributed releases and Spartacus. Paramount has released It's A Wonderful Life from a newly minted 4k restoration and Sony released The Bridge on the River Kwai with Dolby Atmos. Universal just released Jaws in a limited 4k edition, so hurry! Make sure you get a 4k player capable of Dolby Vision disc playback to go along with a Dolby Vision capable 4k HDR TV. Do your homework. Cheapo 4k displays tend to fall down on the job of reproducing wide color gamuts and HDR contrast and brightness.

Due to production issues stemming from the pandemic and the consolidation of some disc manufacturing plants, it's not a guarantee that Lawrence or any of the others in the boxed set will receive individual releases. Besides, they each come in individual standard disc cases with slip covers and the inner sleeves have the original poster art.

If you watch 'Prometheus,' David is modeling himself as the titular character in 'Lawrence of Arabia.' The beauty of this is when you watch 'Prometheus' in 3D (as it was in theatres), the scenes David watches are also in 3D! Ridley Scott too the time to make those 'Lawrence' scenes in 3D! A very cool effect! As far as I know, this film has never been in 3D.

A few weeks ago I invited friends to come over to watch Lawrence on 4K blu-ray for this weekend but then found out it's completely sold out. I mean, no one has it. You can only buy it second hand on Amazon or ebay for 95 dollars to a few hundred dollars! Sony/Columbia! Make some more! We're going to have to stream it off Amazon instead:(

Hi Jeff ... love your reviews ... keep up the good work. I have an unrelated question ... have you ever bought a defective movie from Best Buy? I tried watching Ex Machina today and it took me 3 times to get it to run, with it finally freezing 2/3 of the way thru. It wasn't the bluray player because I watched another one after this happened.

Universal is also releasing their amazing Spartacus 4k restoration on 4k Blu-ray in July. If they didn't processes it further from the previous Blu-ray of the same restoration effort, this will a glorious release. In addition, Universal is readying an Alfred Hitchcock 4k disc set from the latest restorations from surviving elements.

Jeff, do you have any thoughts on the skin tones in the 4k vs the previous blu ray? I saw a review where the two were compared by FOMO and he showed how much darker the skin tones are on the 4k to the point I wonder if they are too dark or unnatural. I'd love your thoughts on this (for LOA and any of the other movies in this set). Thanks for the great videos!

HDR10 on disc for the most part is derived from a Dolby Vision master. Try watching Dolby Vision with a RGB color setting from your player.

The 4k release goes from slightly to overall better than the Criterion containing the previous Sony restoration. It also has most or all of the extras from Criterion's version.

Off Topic slightly----Just watched the Bluray of War and Peace 1966 which is Russian---Criterion did a stunning job of it----I also have the best dvd issue of it which is really not very good and I had little hope that a bluray made from a compromised source would be good BUT I was really impressed. Of course, it won't be for everyone as it is subtitled but I love it. I'll wait for a solo edition of Lawrence.

The wet gate scan in 2012 was 8k and the Blu-ray was produced from that this release is sourced from that 8k master

a 65mm shot film on 4K IS the sole reason for the format. Any new digitally captured movie is inferior to the 'classic' movies filmed in 70mm

I can't wait to project it on my 4k projector. I still don't get why studios scan a film like this in 4k and only release it in 1080p only to release the 4k a few years later. They did the same with the latest Robocop 4k scan.

Been there, done that. The Sony 4k disc further improves upon Sony's prior restoration effort that was ported by Criterion. Sony's disc also has most or all of the supplements from the Criterion release, so you don't have to buy the Criterion disc for the extras.

While I love the 4K reviews, can you also give us a view on high quality TVs available in 2020 - I'm thinking Sony, LG, Samsung variety.. or perhaps if any are made in the US, or Europe? Were your discs scratched at all? Every time I’ve gotten releases where the Blu-ray Discs are stacked on top of each other the discs are always scratched.

From what I have read, so far the two A and B 4k discs for Lawrence's feature are on the bottom on the two hubs with the two Blu-ray's on top. If anything is going to be scratched, it's the supplemental disc (already being replaced due to an error) and the Blu-ray feature disc.

I sit with my eyeballs just over 6' from my 65"OLED. I should benefit from the Dolby Vision AND experience a close as you do viewing angle with the projector. I am full Atmos capable 7.3.4 as well.

I think you should continue with the older movies review. this is off topic, but seeing as how you have an inside connection, I have a couple of questions for you. have you heard of any Bruce Lee, black exploitation movies or Eddie Murphy movies being released on 4K UHD?

Haven't gone through all of your videos yet but do you ever review anything from Wes Anderson? I'm a huge fan and I'm debating if his work is better seen on a CRT (obviously via DVD) or through an LED. I need to do more research but I believe he uses analog film cameras.

I ordered mine from TCM's (Turner Classic Movies) store (run by Alliance Entertainment as one of their e-stores, one of the largest media distributors) and set up a new account to get an additional 10% off my first order. It made it, overall, the cheapest place I could find even with tax and shipping. My set just shipped.

Question for Jeff or anyone else. Do you or have you had issues with 4K discs freezing up or stuttering towards the end of the movie. I have a Sony X700 UHD player and have watched hundreds of blu-rays with no issue. I’ve watched 4 UHD movies now and two have had playback issues, all are new discs. I had John wick 3 freeze towards the end, and i had 2004 hellboy stutter towards the end once, but it didn’t totally freeze. This has made me very wary to jump into 4k deeper. Some feedback from the community would be greatly appreciated.

Did you get fingerprints on those discs? I'm fairly new to 4K Blu-ray, but I have a X700 myself and ran into problems at the end of Forrest Gump. Turned out there were some very obvious fingerprints on the edge of the playing surface; since optical discs generally play from the inner edge out (reverse of vinyl), they caused problems at the end. Wiped those off carefully, and it played back fine. 4K Blu-ray is a lot more sensitive to those kind of things than previous optical disc formats.

While 4k discs are more sensitive to smudges, dirt, and scratches, the X700 is notorious for having a lot more playback issues than some other player models.

Ordered and received from Amazon this classic Columbia set. I put in this disc on my 4K player and sony intro comes on and then the main menu, complete with video and music. I clicked on the Play button, Disc 1 and then the screen went black with no video, just the soundtrack for over 4 minutes!! Then the movie started normal--it does this on Disc 2 also, but is this normal for this disc? I've never seen this done in any movie restoration or not. Also I got one that is missing a lot of the special features for this movie. Should I return this movie to Amazon as defective?

I believe that is the overture at the beginning, and the intermission at the start of disc 2. With very long epic films back then, it was common to have both of those included. I'm not super familiar with the film, so I don't know if Lawrence of Arabia usually has those (I'm guessing the answer is yes) or if they usually play over a black screen. Usually overtures and intermissions in films like these have an "intermission" title card or something like that, but maybe Lawrence of Arabia didn't have title cards there for some reason. I'm not certain though.

@@SamLovesMovies25 Yeah that is my experience in older movies is that they have an Intermission title in a longer film like this. The film looks awesome on 4K, but I like my special features, especially on older films like this and it is missing some---I know Sony notified the people they sent preview discs too about this problem and that they would be sent a replacement disc---don't know what the rest of us are supposed to do--he said he posted a "link" to this info, but I don't know how to get to this link.

I just saw that Sony has acknowledged that this comes with an incorrect special features disc. Not sure if you heard, but they are working on replacing it for those affected. I guess the one you have is now a bit of a collector's item!

Good luck with that. Disney controls that classic and all Fox films now. As soon as they bought Fox, all 4k disc releases ceased from Fox. The last one was Ford vs Ferrari. You could tell because the Dolby Atmos track wasn't screwed with.

This movie was shot in 65mm and was released in 70mm. If you had a 35mm print at home it would not look as good as if you had and projected a 70mm print. That said, the 65mm original negative has more detail than a 35mm reduction negative, and would have more detail than a scan from a 35mm original negative of "Jaws", for example . That is, if everybody used original negatives it would be great- which they often don't. Original negatives on many older titles don't exist anymore, and if they do they are often more expensive to work with than companies want to deal with in scanning. So a laboratory - corrected film dupe is often used. Money is often the most important issue. One always wishes what looks best would be the best - especially in 4K. And 4K is the last, best hope.

Excited to see this edition. However, I have no interest in a 4K HD release of neither "In a League of their Own" nor "Jerry Maguire." Unless it's otherwise heavily discounted, I'm not likely to pay $113.00 for this set...

the reason you dont see a difference with dolby vision is probably because your hisense tv doesnt get bright enough to display good hdr

I have done googlefu years hoping to see separate 4K release and noup... nothing so far. It is possible that there will be one. But it is Also possible that there wont be. (Not likely though, but no release info at all at this momemt other than this box set.)

I think Dolby Vision is only better IF you have a really bright 1000+ NIT TV. On my Sony X900H, I much prefer the HDR10.

I love Lawrence of Arabia but I’m holding out hoping they do an individual release of it. Also, having the film spread out over two discs is a total deal breaker for me. I have no interest in swapping out discs while I’m watching a movie. I don’t understand why they would choose to release it like that. Is that because technically they couldn’t fit the entire film on one disc?

I understand why you have that perspective but even on the disks there is an intermission screen that has the soundtrack playing. It makes you feel like your watching the film in the cinema back in the 60’s it gives you the perfect opportunity to take break. It actually adds to the watching of the film plus I would never want the bitrate to be inferior because of So y trying to cram the whole 4 hours on 1 disk.

Just so you know, HDR10 and Dolby Vision should look *exactly* the same, if you're using a really nice HDR TV or projector. They both come from the same HDR master. The benefits of Dolby Vision come with lower-end HDR TVs that don't support the same contrast range as nicer TVs. Dolby Vision will tailor itself to the capabilities of those particular TVs and that's why it's superior. But yeah, if you have a nice OLED or something, you shouldn't be able to tell the difference, in theory.

That's not true when it comes to Dolby Vision discs with a 12 bit FEL (Full Enhancement Layer) encode. This core+extension feature of Dolby Vision is only optionally available on disc (not streaming). It recreates the 12 bit per pixel Dolby Vision HDR master as best as possible on home media. Better color rendition, better contrast, and no banding compared to the 10 bit version.

Oh, my! (as George Takei would say) Have you ever seen any of the other in this set? They are amazing films. Classics in every sense of the word. Jerry Maguire ain't too bad either, though I am partial to other Cameron Crowe films above this one.

Did you say 4K’s are more scratched resistant?!?! I think I know what you are trying to say.. but this is misleading the care one should take with their disc. 4K’s are extremely fragile in playback per scratch than an Blu-ray and or DVD.. a mild scratch on DVD will play fine but the same scratch will ruin a 4K disc.. fingerprints (Oil) will stop a 4K from playing but not a Blu-ray/DVD Due to the amount of Data on the respective formatted Disc. 4K’s are sensitive disc compared to the other formats and should never be compared as more scratched resistant than a Blu-ray or DVD.
