He was a stern and demanding teacher. His son, Ali Akbar Khan, would spend time chained to a tree for his failings when he was a child. His passion didn't leave room for anything less than total commitment. Indus and Muslims united by their love of music. Respect. This a gem of a document. Thank you for posting.

If a man of his age can make his wife laugh heartily .. his greatness is already manifest. The rest of what he does is just the details .. but nonetheless, Baba it would take infinitely lot more than what I have to even try to summarize Baba .. one of the few truly Grand Old Men of India!

When I first heard His name, He was referred to as "Baba" Allauddin Khan Saheb, and not "Ustad" Allauddin Khan Saheb. I wondered why. Long years later, I got the answer myself.

This family is the most lustrous treasure not only in India, but worldwide, and we owe a debt of deep regard and gratitude to them. I saw Ustad Ali Akbar Khan perform when I was 17 in the Bay area. Although I never saw Ravi Shankar perform, he and George Harrison became good friends and benefactors of Srīla A C Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, whom I also saw in San Francisco. I am so grateful for these influencial personalities in my life . I was trained in Western classical music, but as soon as I graduated with a degree in music, I choose to be free of the constraints of a career in classical music. It was way too narrow a path for my heart, after I heard the sarod being played by Ali Akbar Khan, and heard the chanting of the Maha mantra, and jazz and pop of the day. I felt more devotion in that music. Had I gotten funding I would have liked to study at the Ali Akbar College of Music, but I was under age and my parents forbid it. It was also 1½ hours away from the only home I had, with my 2 sisters and parents.

True musician and a simple folk with immense passion for music. Generations after generation he will be remembered for his illustrious contribution through the demonstrations of his Maihar Gharana music from the likes of Ravi Shankar, Ali Akbar, Annapurna, Bahadur Khan, Nikhil Banerjee, Ashish Khan and many others.
