I remember during interviews for Wish that the VA for Asha was talking about "stepping into her power" and the only thing I could think of was that how at all was it her power to "step into" in the first place. She didn't inherit it, it wasn't voluntarily given to her, she didn't put forth effort to learn it like Magnifico did, and from her attitude she certainly didn't do anything special on-screen to earn it. She basically made a wish to be given free stuff with no effort, then on top of that stole what Magnifico put in the work for. Frankly, Magnifico was probably the only good guy in that entire movie because the whole kingdom just kept begging for free stuff from him without giving him anything of value in return and it's a gorram miracle he granted _any_ of their wishes before the events of the movie took place.

Why do you think so many Americans laud Columbus, one of the most ruthless, bloodthirsty, slave-taking monsters to crawl out of Europe and make his way to the new world? So much of the real history around his life is carefully omitted in US schools. Children are told he 'discovered' America, when he never even got there. A big problem is how DEI standards insist that striving for perfection is a feature of “white supremacy.” Expecting a high level of excellence is “white supremacy.” This is not a mindset that will ever achieve anything close to perfection. As I told my kids and grandkids, you can’t hit a target you don’t aim for, and DEI doesn’t make a target of excellence.

Yes, but that's our white supremacist outlook on the world, according to their narrative. Wanting to "achieve anything close to perfection" is a white state of being, enforced upon the world by us, the whites. If we weren't white, or more accurately if we were brown, we wouldn't have these urges. We wouldn't BE concerned about hitting any targets. According to them, we would be relaxed into state of existence where you just are, where there's no pressure, and you live in harmony with nature like your brown ancestors apparently did; and the world just arranges around you so you get everything, from dental care to cancer medicine because Nature.

Building a new future by rewriting the past, by beating those with knowledge and skill to death for being "bourgeois", by giving senior roles and responsibilities to those preaching the party line loudest, irrespective of any actual ability. Apparently this Jennifer lady had never heard of the Multiplane camera that was designed for use in the old 2D cell animations to give it all a lively 3D look to the finished animation, and how they were able to mesh them with live action in later works, which was groundbreaking an unimaginable by general movie going audiences of the time. Yeah, she didn't bother having the 3D CGI animators, who depending on their age probably had never heard of the device nor the process themselves, thus never bothered to request that they emulate the look of that process developed by Disney for Wish, which is why it all looked flat and jarring to viewers.

It’s easy to understand why Alan thought the issues with Wish mainly boiled down to a rushed production by a surplus of overworked or inexperienced animators. The entire movie looks unfinished. Like they ran out of time in the last third of the project, just printed what they had, and sent it to theaters. To learn that it was intentionally made to look that way blows my mind. The magic is truly gone at Disney.

The 3D for 2D idea isn't a bad idea - folks on KZfaq have produced some incredible cel-shaded 3D works using Blender's grease pencil and the Goo Engine. But they didn't go in hard enough on the 2D aesthetic. The models still look 3D. The lighting is too realistic. The line-art doesn't look hand-drawn. The character models are not stylized enough to look like vintage Disney characters. There's no drop-shadow which typically accompanied 2D animations shot on production cels. They just botched it completely.

Anyone who's familiar with 3D art could understand from the first trailer that it was a conscious decision to try make the 3D look more 2D, with the shading and line art. Happens a lot in games. But it wasn't fully committed to here, and expectations for disney films are different - they have a style. A decent recent example of this being well done would be Puss in Boots and the wingfeather saga, imo.

I say it rings true today--even if Wish's rushed production got all its technical fixes and was put in your favorite artistic style, it would not have saved it from subpar writing, piss-poor management and DEI influence. Removing John Lasseter was one of Disney's biggest mistakes ever made in its 100+ year history.

I mean yes.... ....but to a point. Movies and other visual media are NOT books, and it shouldn't ALL go back to the story. In the sense that once the story is out of the way, the visual part of things can really boost something from good to awesome. My favourite example of this are movies like Sin City or 300. I mean, if they were filmed straight like, say, an episode of Criminal Minds or Spartacus, they'd still be... good movies, but MAN did the style and the visuals boost them into GREAT movies. Yeah, story IS the fundamental part of STORYtelling; that's hardly news, but if you have a VISUAL media it's ridiculous to say "oh it's all same shit, just take your phone and shoot a number of scenes, why bother". There's simply MORE to visual media than just the story, and it's GOOD to demand the more.

i agree. i kind of also would say that mediums should be respected, however. They can be blended. but respected. This CONSTANT trend of making 3d look 2d is not blending. Its disrespect. They want to steal the aesthetic - but not understand the form. Its a war, internally. As a 2d artist - if i did 3d it would absolutely be to blend the tools and make 2dish looking stuff. So i get the overall appeal and theory. But it also feels like just trying to steal a style: you killed 2d, fired them all, have a broad range of 3d artists, want to use them, so you just get them to steal a 2d-ish look rather than knowing 2d. It was to the studios benefit to go 3d. Reusable rigs and assets. 3d TOTALLY KILLED the idea of the star animator. No Glen Keane or James Baxter appears in a cog-and-wheel process of 3d. No one follows an artist. Its the studio now. Yawn.

But a lot of other industries are not far behind; these ideas have been prevalent in medicine for quite a while, and in financial services and insurance, and it's taking hold in other "hard" industries (see, Boeing). It's entrenched in government, and most frightening, in the military. The country's Secretary of Transportation can't make a statement without reminding us that our roads, highways, and railroads are racist. We have a male Secretary of Health who wears a dress with military insignias and goes by 'Rachel'. Go check on the DEI policies of your local electric company's website, or maybe your local water department's; I guarantee they have them. While I wouldn't quite think it was common knowledge, I thought it was fairly well-known that purple was restricted to royalty, or the very affluent. The only source for purple dye for a long time was from some kind of mollusk or something, and only a tiny amount could be extracted from each one, causing there to be an incredibly limited supply. Again, not common knowledge necessarily, but fairly well-known, I thought. Even if not, as was illustrated here, a quick search online would have yielded that information. But why do that, when you can just make something up, something their clients wanted to hear?

I was always more into gaming and movies. Exact same thing happened there. The people with the actual talent were pushed out by the DEI hires. This is why you now have $70 "AAA" games look worse than games made a decade ago, release broken, and have performance issues even on very high end hardware. And this applies to literally everything nowadays. There was this word going around late last year; "enshitification". People are starting to notice that the quality of everything is declining. Media is trying to gaslight the public about it, or are still trying to blame the coof, but it's gotten pretty obvious to even the normies that everything sucks now.

I was at Disney World (04/05/2024) last week, we wanted to get to the parks before Disney completely imploded. My wife noticed pretty early in the trip while shopping that all the 'Wish' stuff was discounted by 40-50% off. So we kinda made a game of it, if the store had anything 'WISH' related it was on sale at least 40%. Something else my wife noticed is there was basically nothing else in the stores that was discounted, especially at the in park stores. A side not that i noticed the classic rides like Peter Pan, It's a Small World and Thunder Mountain where among the most popular and went down often. While these rides are getting long in the tooth, i spoke to one of my Co-workers who was a "Disney-Adult" her family use to go to Disney world yearly from 1990 till 2018 said she never show those rides down in almost 3 decades of attending the parks. Also TRON was down for almost 3 full day, one of their newest rides and it went down on Monday @1500 which was an After Hours Party night till 1AM and didn't come back up till Thursday morning.

I work in electronics, not remotely connected to entertainment. I'm chiming in about the overall attitude of the workforce. It has become filled with twenty-somethings who were raised like royalty by their parents and who have no intention of doing anything not ABSOLUTELY required. There are some gems in that mess to be sure and I know several. But 85 percent of our new hires are lazy and completely unconcerned with being seen as such. It's revolting. In the case of this studio it's a miracle they managed to get a movie out in any state, let alone a good one.

The shot you showed regarding how flat it looked and lack of depth - I don't understand the logic here. Back in the 'traditional' 2d Disney' era, they pioneered the 'multi plane' (iirc) which was basically shooting a whole stack of seperated cels so that you got depth and parallax in the shot (just like in the real world). That frame looked like it was created by someone without an artistic eye. Contrast is everything (be it brightness, color or pattern etc) and basic composistion teaches you to well, actually compose and bring out key characters etc. Seems to me at this point that all this can't be anything except intentional self destruction..

Not to mention that they already totally nailed this "3D-does-traditional" concept with their 2012 short: Paperman. Look at Paperman then look at Wish and ask yourself how in the world they managed to get this so dead wrong.

@@AndyVanDalsem I'll take a look as I'm not familiar, thanks. I've always loved animation whether it's stop motion, traditional 2d or cgi (to a degree) but I've never been a fan of trying to mimic real world to the point of you're trying to do the same work for less money/time, but If it's stylistic then great and I'm all for it. I've also seen anime using a ton of cgi for a long time for complex scenes where perspective is tricky to do by hand like moving vehicles, but there seems to be a bit of a trend where they are going for the cel shaded look but in cgi now and it looks baaad. The movement is too smooth but it still looks like traditional cel animation and so you end up in the uncanny valley. It can be done nicely if you reduce the frame rate to match more like traditional cel animation where you'd typically animate every second frame (or even less for cheap productions). Sorry, I veered waay off topic, ha ha.

"I don't care whether the film is 2-D, 3-D, CGI, or hand-drawn, it all goes back to the story." - Richard Roeper That quote came from a negative review of Disney's Chicken Little back in 2005.

This is exactly what happened to Call of Duty and Blizzard Entertainment as well. Women in Tech movement forced in 50% women in as junior devs from college who where just there to get Call of Duty or Blizzard on their resume, not because they wanted to actually work there. Some got pushed up the leadership chain because Activision (the owner of both) needed 50% women in leadership roles. Senior talent started leaving or being pushed out. Their games started to suffer in quality.

Tel you the truth, I’m on vacation and got to watch the Disney Channel and Pixar’s Monsters has an animated series that’s far better in its look and is more entertaining for the several episode me and my sons watched after turning off Wish about 30 minutes in.

Like many work places, production is focused on hitting schedule benchmarks. Getting things done "on time," determined off screen somewhere by someone for any number of opaque reasons. Which is fine, on its face it's a reasonable metric for everyone from PA's to line producers to follow, even if the boots on the ground that actually make the thing are annoyed by it fairly regularly. The problem being is when you get to job titles the likes of which Lasseter had, when someone in that position _also_ prioritizes getting things done "on time" and ticking those boxes on the spread sheet - rather than their primary job function which is *_creative and quality control._*

never saw wish but the imagery of a fallen star guiding the efforts of the protagonist is an interesting juxtaposition when considered in contrast to Pinocchio where they wish upon a star in the heavens or peter pan where a heavenly star is used as a navigational guide in those cases the stars stayed in Heaven and were aspirational guides aiming the Heroes to the heavens... but In wish they chose the imagery of a fallen star as a guide to help her subvert a king.... this sounds familiar maybe because there is an ancient story of a fallen star who seeks to exalt his throne over the stars of heaven ie overthrow the King of heaven? see Isaiah 14 "How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning!...For thou hast said in thine heart, 'I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God...I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High'...."
