I run 100 micron socks. I change them out on Sunday and Wednesday, when I do my water changes. I have something like 24 of these socks. I keep a 5-gal bucket with water and bleach. My sump uses 3 socks, so I am swapping out 6 filter socks every week. When I can't put any more socks in the bucket I run it through the washer a couple times. When done, I run the washer one more time with hot water and bleach to be sure the washer is clean. I let the clean socks air dry. I try to buy new socks at least once a year.

Before spending on another dollar on corals or livestock, if you have a sump, switch to a fleece roller! Game changer. And I understand that many can’t redo their plumbing, so there’s other option such as the Klir fleece roller which I use that go straight into the filter sock chamber. It has totally helped me bring my nutrients down.

I’ve been sticking the hose for my sand vacuuming in my filter sock for over 10 years. I have an auto water changing system so I don’t do water changes while I vacuum the sand and realized a long time ago I needed a way to do this while leaving everything running, it’s the last step in my weekly maintenance is to remove the filter sock after this and start with a fresh one

I just had mine overflow this morning thank God it was a slow spill wasn't as bad as it could have been. But it was my fault I had the overflow opened too much so the pressure was too high causing spillage on the side from the clogged filter sock. Wouldn't have been an issue of I had my overflow pipe set to a slower flow and my return pump not on max power

Filter socks were great until I lost my desire to clean them every 48 hours. Been using fleece roller filters for 6 years now and never looked back. The Thieling Rollermat never failed once. I have replaced it with the Clarisea 5000 but I'm not sure if I will not get a new motor and pinion and go back to the Thieling. 4-6 weeks per roll for Clarisea versus 3-6 months on the Thieling roll. Drawbacks? The Thieling is big and bulky and is difficult to clean without an overnight acidic soaking. Advantages? Twice the filter surface area, easy to load a new roll without using the old roll as a leader, and a safety dump that it directed, not just an overflow. But the Clarisea is so easy to plumb. One straight pipe down with a piece of flex for the 3cm offset. The Thieling needs several elbows and turns. The Clarisea makes less gurgling noises. Both filter the water with extraordinary effectiveness.

Filter socks got my nutrients super low, before I was using poly in a cup. I bought a little bracket for 13$ that included 2 mesh socks and I swap them every 2-3 days. They’re 200 micron and start to clog by then, They’ll over flow if I leave them for 5-7 days I’m guessing. The main reason I change them is because I have a simple tank and sump, so when it starts clogging a bit my water level starts to rise in the display, I have a sicce 3.0 return on a ball valve and it’s tuned perfectly for a clean sock. Once they clog my overflow drains a little slower than normal

I wasn’t a fan of the waterbox filter socks. Not sure if they’re available in Australia, but there’s some components made for modifying waterbox aquariums. I replaced the filter sock on my with a Intank media basket, then just use several layers of sponge filter. The media basket did cost more than the filter socks. But should only be that one time cost instead of buying replacement socks. The media basket that I got did require cutting out the supports out of the tank that held the filter sock plate.

Number 21 making the mistake that filter socks and sumps are for salt water tanks, they also apply to Fresh water as well, and make maintenance a breeze :) Number 22, don't ditch the mesh, see comment below, mesh is great Number 7.5 / 8.5, addition to the skimmer and mesh touch point you noted getting a 200 micron filter when you only need a 75 micron to catch big chunks and let the skimmer do its job, or if you have multi stages in your sump for filter socks pre filtering in chamber1 with a 75 and chamber 2 with the 200 micron, the latter not that common to find any more but worked great and less buildup occurs in chamber 2

And do you plumb it to your return pump?
@BRStv
@BRStv 3 жыл бұрын
That would be a little bit of a DIY project. We do sell larger 20" canisters that you could plumb in with your return with the proper fittings. www.bulkreefsupply.com/reverse-osmosis-canisters.html

Socks cost £10 here. You're just like "buy 40 of them". That's over 500 US bucks!

Filter socks suck. Filter cup with floss. Just toss out old filter floss and add new stuff.

Weird. Title is filter socks as best filter but there's another video that they both said they would never use them

If you can avoid these mistakes 🙂 Sometimes reefers need to be honest with themselves and know which maintenance items they're actually going to maintain. If you go into it knowing that you're not going to use the filter properly, it's best to pick another tool (like an automatic rollermat) to get the job done instead.

Never understood filter socks especially since filter floss pads predate it, & solve that HUGE problem you had with the holes for socks in the sump lol just cut out a nice big rectangle & done PLUS yall nasty for putting that decomposing thing in your washer, seems about white

I use 10 micron so they clog every three days and then I replace them.

Why would anyone buy a pre-made sump? They are the biggest scam in this hobby IMO. Just make your own, it's incredibly easy and you can make one for under $50 easily depending on the size
