Hansa also doesn't count toward the district limit since it's a special district. So technically germany's cities get 2 extra districts, as long as one is the Hansa. So as soon as you plop a new city you can build 3 districts in it, even if it only has 1 population.

One VERY important thing to note about the U-boat is that the +10 combat strength is a LOT better than +7% strength. In civ 6, combat damage is calculated by the FLAT difference between two units' combat strength, not the PERCENTAGE difference. This means that the difference between combat 20 and combat 30 is the SAME as the difference between combat 70 and combat 80. This means a U-Boat hitting a regular sub is somewhat akin to a warrior fighting a war cart. This is a quite a significant difference. Not absolutely huge, but a heck of a lot better than 7%. As a side note, this is how the unit promotions such as '+7% combat strength when attacking ranged and meele units' stay relevant all game, not matter how high combat strength of the units involved gets.

The mentioned strategy quite nicely translates from real history: Barbarossa indeed was a famous "city spammer", in the process of christianization/colonization. In a rather short amount of time (about 3 centuries), the Empire managed to get from the left side of the Rhine (Cologne/Aachen) to most of central Europe- up to Livonia (as part of the Hansa) in the very east.

I find +7 against city-states useful in the very early game. When you can't steal the settler from AI you can just steal the entire city with just 2-3 warriors. And these are not even entirely bad, as they almost always have at least 1-2 resources (luxury or strategic). Edit. Oh, and early stealing this cities don't give you warmonger penalty.

My first playthrough was with germany, when i finally succumbed to the lengthy time each turn would take, and threw nukes on the last remaining civ with a capital, i was at 34 cities. One thing you forgot is the bonus for fully improved hansa's where they would provide production in a 6 tile range. This more then anything was very helpfull in producing more and more cities. You plant a city and it gets so much production from adjacent cities, everything you build takes 1 turn. I know this is standard with all production districts, but seeing how usefull it is to build em with germany, you could have touched upon it more.

Don't forget the Hansa is also a free district towards this limit. So you can go for three district with each small city. Hansa, comerce and an additional one. The problem will be of course the constant increase in build costs for districts so it becomes more and more problematic to build the hansas in a reasonable timeframe.

Someone has already commented this but I think I bears repeating. All Civ specific districts do not count towards district limits. This means that there is additional strength in the Street Carnival, Royal Navy Dockyard, Lavra, Hansa, and Acropolis. For Germany it means you could build as you said with commercial and Hansa, but then go for entertainment district to allow them to grow further. Super wide with the possibility of future growth, offsetting the penalty of so few luxury resources. And since you have cities clumped close together if you can get Colosseum/ Stadiums late on you can have some pretty large cities. Can't wait for more opinions on the other civs. =]

I came to a very similar conclusion with Germany when I first played them. I tend to do 2 pop cities for Hansa, Commercial Hub, and Entertainment Center (to counter the war weariness penalties). Germany is probably the ideal wide civ and it makes it very easy to do medieval and later wars from the sheer production of each city and how many you have

exactly my thoughts as well. With Germany you get rewarded for the strategy of building many cities with (linked) hansas and commerce hubs - which then gives you awesome production & a lot of gold and city-growth. Having followed that so far, you are now effective in all areas you chosse to develop and with that so free to pursuit your own preferred strategies instead of being pretty much locked down into a specific path as f.e. spain. Great civ-design!

I found the unit choice very odd... I mean I understand that it can't always be the Panzer, just for varity reasons, but giving Germany a naval unit and only one naval unit is bit in the wrong direction, since Germany was rather land base military wise (Prussia was the only great european power to simply not have a naval for a while). And if you do have different leads, because well I'm almost sure a "Bismarck DLC" will find its way to us, why not go with a fitting unit for Babarossa and the overall medieval theme? How about some Teutonic knights for example? Remember Age of Empires 2? The small infantry unit which turn out to be a completely bastard of a unit?

Completely agree. I am guessing someone really liked "Das Boot". U-boats quickly became sitting ducks during WW2, once British sonar tech evolved. The survival rates for u-boat crews during WW2 were atrocious. I would have voted for a Teutonic knight as well.

Hey Filthy, I think you can build a third district with German 2 pop cities. I remember Ed saying on a live stream before release that all unique buildings, districts, units, anything, could be built without the same restrictions as their default counterparts. This means that all unique units don't require strategic resources and all districts (Hansa) don't count towards the standard district cap. I just did a quick test and I might have done something wrong but I was able to build 3 districts in any 2 population German city as long as one of those was the Hansa. I managed to put up commerce, hansa and one other. I tested it with campus, holy site, encampment, theater, harbor and entertainment districts. So I think your strategy might be even more powerful as you can put up encampments in these small cities and pump out leveled up units or if you end up with an awesome mountain range get a nice science boost. You can even just use it to improve the production of the hansas by having more adjacent districts.
@sergioaponterondon9295
@sergioaponterondon9295 7 жыл бұрын
A valid strategy, and I recall you doing this in the pre-release games you played as Germany, however the increasing district production cost seems to have been tweaked since pre-release, and the production costs get really expensive after 4-5 cities, which may make this ICS strategy irrelevant. Each commercial hub and hansa is going to cost more to build and it's not an insignificant amount. Should still make an 8-city plan really good, but beyond that I don't think it'll be worth the effort.

I'd like to debunk a tragic myth here. "District cost goes up the more district you have" is a MYTH. The actual formula can be found on Reddit. District cost depends on technological or cultural advancement.
@MyOrangeString
@MyOrangeString 7 жыл бұрын
In effect, the more technologies or civics you've discovered, the higher the district cost. Fun facts: - it means one should build districts ASAP - bee-lining to more expensive techs/civics is more viable - building cost is LOCKED the turn you place your district on the map. So, you can place it and not even build it, just so as to prevent the cost from going up. So there's an argument for going super-wide in the early to mid game, build districts as fast as possible, then come back smashing everything in the mid to late game. It seems to synergize particularly well with this Germany thing :)

No, builders and settlers costs are increasing with the number you produced: the more you make builders, the more expensive they are. I wonder if the cost is "locked" when you start production (like it does for districts) because then it'd make it even more interesting to start them all at the same time.

Another thing that would work wonders (pun intended lol) for this "ultra-wide" germany strategy is to pick Autocracy somewhat early on as your government for the +10% wonder production (and possibly use the economic policy for +15% to ancient/classical wonders or just use god king for a few turns to get an early pantheon and pick the +15% ancient/classical wonder pantheon bonus, either works) so you can quickly build the Hanging Gardens which gives the +15% growth to all cities. If you get the hanging gardens real early and make a crapton of small cities like mentioned in the vid you would end up SUPER well off in the late game if you play your cards right. (one other thing to keep in mind is that the hanging gardens would also increase the amenities required for all those cities so something like a well placed Colosseum [boosted with all that +wonder production i mentioned earlier of course, to make it fast to build] would take care of that, and you could easily afford to put in the single entertainment district required for the Colosseum since you get that extra district allotment anyway.) Using a setup like that with your only two wonders being Hanging Gardens and Colosseum to boost ~5 cities crammed next to each other each with a hansa and commercial hub in strategic placements etc.. would give you quite a few large cities by late game; i could EASILY see you having say 7-8 cities with 10+ population each by the late industrial era no problem with this strategy. (at which point you can have zoos, sewers, neighborhoods etc.. to compliment the colosseum etc.. to handle the high population cities).
@smcasas9367
@smcasas9367 7 жыл бұрын
That's not how mathematics work. 85/75 is 1.1333333 so it's a 13% increase. When attacking districts the bonus is still applied. +7 may not be much, but it's a 27/20 = 1.35, it's a 35% boost for the warrior, 32/25 = 1.28, 28% boost for the archer.. What it's supposed to do is that from the get go, you'll produce a couple of warriors and a couple of slingers and by turn 30 (on regular speed) you'll have conquered 3 more cities. That early population advantage turns over the course of the game into a larger advantage of course.

Is it a lot? I mean, yesterday I had a game as china with immortal ais (haven't got to deity yet, my first full game at civ 6), and with only 2 holy sites and basically not giving any credit to faith game except for maintaining my own religion in three most important cities (had that +1% production in my rel) I still had around 100 faith per turn. With no faith in pantheon and no faith-related policies. I imagine it would easily hit 300 if I built the faith district in all my eight cities and take some faith cards. Had 2 religious cs with 6 envoys though and like 4 relics, maybe that's why it was the case. Just trying to figure out the base line, amount that counts as a lot. Like 400-600 culture is a lot, cuz I hit the repeatable civics a couple of times before the win. And 300-500 tourism is a lot, because by the time I won on immortal with culture, I had like 800+ culture and 600+ tourism, therefore most of the win was made with 500 culture and 400 tourism. And 250 science is not a lot, since I did not manage to hit all science win techs by that time. Was that 300 faith enough to get the religious victory?

I think Gaul is a little better at production, the Hansa is nice and unlike the oppidum, you can get district bonus. However the Oppidum is unlocked with Ironworking, and once built gives you Apprenticeship, so you are most likely an age or two ahead of everyone else when it comes to units and production. Oppidums also get the bonuses from adjacent mines, and as the Gauls you are most likely building mines for the bonus culture, production, gold, and science you can get. I might have to try a Duel AI game between Germany and Gaul and see who has better production

@FilthyRobot
@FilthyRobot 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah. Botched that live in the video. What I was trying to do was give a meaningful translation of what 10 combat strength meant for a 75 combat strength unit. The quick mental math would be 75/10, rounds to around 8. 8 goes into 100 about 12 times, so around a 12% boost. The real math would 75/10=7.5, then 1/7.5=.133 or 13.3% increase in strength. Alternatively, 85/75=1.133, but I find that a lot harder to do in my head than the method I was attempting to describe. I’ll add an annotation to clarify. The point is how much less +10 combat strength is worth on a large combat strength unit compared to a smaller combat unit. Compare that +10 on the sub to the +10 that a hoplite gets when adjacent to another hoplite. 35/25 is 1.4 or a 40% increase in combat strength. +10 is much more valuable of a boost on a lower combat strength unit. Easier mental math 25/10=2.5 How many 2.5s in 100? 40.

Entertainment District should be the go-to #3, IMO. *poof* Amenity problem gone and you can let your cities grow as large as possible, at which point you start opening more districts as pop goes up. It's AOE, too, so you don't need it in every city just pepper them around so all your cities are getting the bonus from at least one.

Long term entertainment is best, yes. Short term harbor. Also depends on possible spots for entertainment district, but yeah, amenities are never wasted.

Tried this strategy in an AI game, can confirm this is stupidly broken. Oh and the synergy with Toronto's Suzerain bonus is off the charts if they spawn in the game - it extends the AOE of Commercial and Industrial districts by 3 more tiles. By the end of my game, the lowest production city (a 1-tile island city) was doing 56 hammers per turn. The capital was doing 181 per turn with +32 amenities from all the Entertainment Districts and wonders I spammed out.

I wouldn't call it the strongest civ, but I'd say it's the strongest dream/endgame. Scythia and Sumeria can still wipe you out in the early game, and prevent you from setting up your strategy, however, once you get factories up and running in most of your empire. You'll have won the game. I don't think anyone else will be able to keep up.

Just tried this in a pub. Works amazing. I ended up getting 5 commercial districts around an industrial with the other industrials having 2-3 commercials around them. Turn 125 i finished nuke tech with 300 science and around 250 NET GOLD INCOME. If you play against germany... keep the pressure up or you wont catch up. Thanks for the idea!

That seems pretty meek... 300 science is pretty average... and 250 gold isn’t anything special either

I've found that Germany is one of those civilizations who after the initial set up of getting the hansa in a city doesn't really care what tiles the city is on. Even in the worst case scenario of it being slap damn in the middle of a desert with literally no food tiles within reach you get 3 districts(4 if you have an internal trade route running from that city) which is all it really needs. Also I've tended to put my nodes in areas where I'd get either a bonus to the commerce hubs(river/ harbor) or get some extra production from resources(like that sexy 3+ tile the warrior is sitting on, or the double pastures to the east depending on what else is connected to that potential node).

What I find the most baffling part about Free Imperial Cities is that any city that would benefit from it shouldn't be building that many districts in the first place, as it either cannot effectively produce them in a timely manner or defend them. It only seems to be useful if you build superdense like you mentioned.
@KSriram

One can actually build three districts in those 2 pop cities since unique districts (hansa, lavra and acropolis) don't count towards the district limit right now.

Hey Filthy I found out that the cost of the district is calculated at the time of placing the plan and the cost goes up according to the number of completed districts. So in a Germany game I placed all the foundations before completing any of them, and all of them cost only 60 hammers.

You can actually go pretty tall with traderoutes. And having a big city with lots of districts to send the traderoutes too is the payoff in a way. Not sure how good barbarosa is at this but I played a naval game as teddy and I am pretty sure most other civs would have been better :) (pangea giving me all the deserts in the world made looking for islands seem like a decent idea at the time) Trade and islands go really nuts once you hit neigbourhoods and the big policies for trade.
@meinnase
@meinnase 7 жыл бұрын
Hey, you talk alot about how people only play pangea because the other maps allow for people to spawn in isolation, giving them an unfair advantage. My question is: Why not mix it up sometimes with the opposite, islands where everyone would be isolated? (i think, i actually dont know how the spawning/world creation works on islands)

do i need to place commerce district first to get the flat production bonus of hansa or i can place hansa then commerce district later and can still get the production bonus? i really wish there's a tool tip that allows me to see the bonus to other district then i'm about to plant a district or a wonder next to them.

Haven't played much multiplayer in civ yet, but at least in single player, Germany can pretty much break the game. The production and commercial diamond strat you mentioned takes about 100-120 turns to get rolling but once you do its GG. You build anything in 5-15 turns. Even the latest wonders are usually done in under 20 turns. (standard speed) At first, Germany's bonus at a glance diddnt seem strong to me but once you learn Civ's mechanics you realize how hilarious being a production focus civ is, since production can be applied to anything you want.

Filip Stysiak Yep. Germany is a monster science Civ as stands right now. Also potential monster culture because its ability to build wonder's so fast. Not to mention if you grow tallish cities you can basically put every districts in all your cities. Great civ!

I honestly feel that Germany is most likely the best Civ in the game at this point for single player. I realize that Filthy's assessments are more to do with multiplayer, where human opponents are going to know about and quickly counter Germany's strengths before they can get Hansas. This said, in single player you can basically win the game any way you want with them by following the strategy of city pairs which have the diamond of hansas and commercial hubs. This will give insane production to small cities which can be spammed out as fast as possible. Once established, you can go any direction with this production. The ability to more quickly build specialty districts, max their buildings and then run the special projects to convert hammers into whatever you want (also get great person points) essentially gives you the edge on any other civ. Unless you are unlucky in the map roll or have an early game military power next to you on start, its hard to screw up as Germany once you know the right strategy for them.

Dire_Venom All you have to do is go into the group chat on their steam page, and ask a mod for an invite. The only reason they're invite only is so they can "ban" people if they've broken too many of the groups rules.

germany gets a free district. germany also has a unique district, which is free as well. this means that you can build 1pop cities with 3districts. hanse, commerce + science (or whatever) just think a second or two about it.... for long term playing its probably the biggest bonus of all civs. especialy because you dont need to grow, so no housing required^^
