This is it. We can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel when it comes to our little Subaru WRX engine. This week Davin gets the final parts on the engine and hopefully, sooner than later, it'll fire up again.

i don't know much about cars, but is it mainly because the design problem of this engine lead to blown head gasket or because of the driving habit?

@@andy2a2m more most builders don't use the proper jigs and steps needed when machining the block and heads and then mixed with engine design they blow. If you use all the proper equipment and steps they can definitely last a long time if taken care of and with quality modern parts and proper maintenance. If abused your going to blow a headgasket

I admire Davin for sticking with this build as he doesn't seem to have the same enthusiasm for it as most of the other car and bike engine restorations he's done over the last few years. The basic 'flat-four' Subaru engine has been around for quite a long time. I suppose some of the complexities, like the tumbler valve, got added along the way to keep the engine emissions or performance up to date.

Love this series. As a self-diagnosed armchair mechanic with minimal experience on actual cars, I've seen a few LS builds that made me think I could probably handle *some* work on my own car's motor. Unfortunate that I own a Subaru because this series has taught me that not all motors are as easy as the LS 😁

Love this series, its great to see old classics and new ones. As a guy who has an FE block and EJ powered car in the garage its nice to see one on a show. I'm about to tear down my EJ20 for some much needed R&R involving head gaskets. For many the WRX and STI were their version of muscle car at a time when the old American ones were unattainable for a kid. You could easily get a WRX to hot rod(I paid 1500 for mine and it drove home!), and it checked the boxes family/economy sedan, hot rod parts from the factory, and a large aftermarket.

Not my preference in engine choices, but amazing work as always. That motor is like two 2 cylinders conjoined at the crank. I'm sure you get suggestions all the time on projects, but take a look at the Toyota 5.7 from the Tundras and Sequoias over the last two decades. Beast of a V8 with a distinct head design. Also, the famous Toyota 22RE, arguably the most reliable motor ever made.

Those are called at Subaru TGVs or “Tumble Generator Valves”. They remain in the “closed” position to tumble the air and mix the fuel better. On higher loads they open up. Lots of guys will delete them, however the performance gains are negligible on normal street usage. A highly dedicated track user might wanna delete them but for the normal street driver, just keep ‘em. I wrote this before i saw you found out what they were called lol.

I’ve only rebuilt one horizontally opposed flat four and it was a zillion times easier. I rebuilt a 69 Volkswagen Beetle engine and I don’t think it took more than a dozen tools and the only “speciality” tool was the large socket for the crank bolt. Otherwise it was a piece of cake. I’m not sure I’d give one of these a try. Even with all the tools and budget of a Hagerty build.

I love almost everything Davin produces, and his video editing skills are as good as anyone. This Subaru build really grates at me, however. I hate Subarus, but it doesn;t diminish my interest in how they are assembled and what make them unique. In just about every Subaru video (except the one where he took the shell of the wagon to get destroyed), it is incredibly apparent how much disdain Davin has for this car, the rebuild, and everything about this job. If he so much as pretended to enjoy this rebuild, it would be much more compelling to watch.

Never install the A/F sensor before installing the engine. You will almost always damage the sensor while lowering the engine into the car. I know this going to an engine dyno for testing and the sensor is required for operation but unless you want to replace the sensor, remove it prior to installing the engine. Also, Put anti-seize on the turbo studs. Always. You will thank yourself later. Looking forward to seeing the engine on the test rig!

Between the machining at Thoroboes, cerakoting, parts, rebuild kits, hoses, odds and ends, with the exception of Davin’s priceless knowledge, busted knuckles and time, it would seam as it would be cost prohibitive to the common man…but prove me wrong!

I'm interested what it will do on a engine Dyno. My air intake is made of plastic. Yours is aluminium.
