On today's Steam Deck video I will go over how to get Final Burn Neo running on your Steam Deck as it's a great alternative to MAME emulation and supports a ton of platforms such as the Neo Geo AES/MVS, Capcom CPS, Capcom CPS 2 and Capcom CPS 3 (get that Street Fighter 3 fix in!) as well as CAVE First Generation, Irem...the list goes on and on!
I will have a separate episode specifically for the Neo Geo as it deserves it / the process is slightly different than everything else on FB Neo!
Again I recommend getting a Dock for your Steam Deck as the process is MUCH easier that way!
But the Steam Deck is proving to be an amazing retrogaming handheld video game emulation machine and I love it!

The Steam Deck sure an emulation beast. Seems like the Xbox Series consoles are also starting to became great emulation devices. It would be interesting to see some set up videos for those at some point as well!

On 6 button fighting games, I usually program medium k&p on the shoulders and light and heavy on the face

I’ll go heavy both on the shoulders myself. Although with steam Deck those back of the shell buttons are pretty useful too

I always put medium punch and kick on the shoulder buttons of my Super Famicom controller. Maybe I'll buy one of those Capcom Soldier Pads. The Super Famicom d-pad is actually better when it's had plenty of use (second-hand). It softens the corners and moves more fluidly.

I have steam deck, I bought only retro games arcade , I have issue , neogeo arcade games never load …all the games load but neo geo never , l have roms non merged , , question is retro arc or os steam deck ?

This worked! Thanks! Saves me money by not having to purchase the anniversary collection on steam. Not to mention even more SF games including the VS series so having the 30th anniversary collection is kinda pointless.

I'm hoping you can help me with a problem I have? I don't know where to copy the hiscore.dat file on my steam deck to save the game hi scores? I used to have this working, but had to recently do a reinstall of everything and now I can't remember where to copy it? Do you have any idea where it needs to be?

@@VideoGameEsoterica Thanks for the reply! I figured it out. For anyone else that wants to save their high score leaderboards? Home/Emulation/bios/fbneo/hiscore.dat If you have your stuff saved on the sd card it's where ever you have your bios folder. In my case I had to create a blank folder fbneo and then I copied the hiscore.dat file in there.

Good Morning! Glad to see your tutorial! I have issues in FBNeo in emulation station! CPS2 dont run! Apears a mensage of error! " This game is Know but one of your romsets is missing files for this version of fbneo!..."...Do you know how fix it? I using a steamdeck!

Bad files for the games. You need the FN Neo versions

Is it normal that only every 20th rom works? all games i would like to play don't work, it starts and closes immediately. But some games are running, I seem to have chosen the right directories. The 5 out of 100 games that start, can also be played. what iam doing wrong? Cadillacs and Dinosaurs, Double dragon, i cant get that good stuff running

Bad roms. FNNeo has a specific rom set. What you are seeing is the behavior of a bad file.

@@VideoGameEsoterica Bad roms? Where can I get some that might work? I tried roms from different sites. there are usually different versions, set 1? set 2? Which language region of Rome do I need? i tried batsugun in all versions i could find and from different sites non of them even started. maybe iam missing some bios? or maybe i have wrong versions of bios are existing?

Think about it this way because I can’t tell you where to find them. You are using FBNeo. So you probably need a FBNeo set of files. Sounds like you are using MAME ones

@@VideoGameEsoterica Ah thanks, that will be it. Emudeck downloaded the "MAME" emulator for my steam deck, so I thought I also need "mame" roms. I've never heard of FBNeo, no idea what that is. But I'll load a set of FBNeo roms now and see if they all work, thanks a lot :)

Have several installations of FBN on different handhelds and can’t get the highscores to be saved on all of them. Do you know what could be causing this? Thanks!

@@VideoGameEsoterica Don’t think it works on every game either. I have FBN on Knulli on a RG35XX H and it saves highscores. On Steam Deck, RGB30 and Miyoo it doesn’t. Already tried to add the same highscores.dat file but doesn’t work…

@@VideoGameEsoterica After some tinkering found the solution. To get highscores saved the file hiscore.dat must be in a folder named fbneo inside the bios folder. Did this on SD, RGB30 and Miyoo M + and A30 and it works on all of them.

Some games don't seem to want to boot even though they work on PC. For example, Super Puzzle Fighter 2 doesn't seem to want to boot for me. Do you know how to fix that?

@@VideoGameEsoterica I actually just solved it. I had to simply reinstall retroarch through emudeck. Now everything just works.

If you figure out how to set up Model 2 Emulator or Supermodel i'd be very interested as they are not included with EmuDeck.

@@VideoGameEsoterica oh another thing I thought of, I've been messing around with Wii emulation with Dolphin on the Deck the last few days. I want to connect my Mayflash Dolphin Bar to use Wii remotes. Pretty specific, but if you had the hardware and were doing something similar I wouldn't say no as there isn't much about this set up online.

I won’t touch Nintendo past GameCube probably. They LOVE to try to get stuff removed via copyright strikes. I haven’t made my final decision yet but I am 50/50 on it

@@VideoGameEsoterica once I'm in a neo geo game I push select while holding down X Y B that puts into retroarch. I go to core options I don't have any of the options ie force 60hz or dip switch settings. I not sure why.

For what I show in this video yes I consider FB to be better than MAME. No knock on MAME but it’s a better application for the games it runs

@@VideoGameEsoterica So basically it's best for games from Capcom, Neo Geo and CAVE first gen. I plan to put lots of other games in MAME, especially with cheats since that's how I play when I play 1-Player offline games.

Yes the best route is MAME + FB Neo. Both are great in their own right
