Another nail in the coffin of quality British television. For an insight into just how vile the Sky people were when they took over BSB I can recommend the book "Dished!"

Lambie-Nairn worked on the Galaxy ident and a few of the other BSB station idents, then worked on the 1991 rebrand of BBC 1 and BBC 2's long running ident series of "2's" - which is why it maybe feels familiar in style.

BSB had a better programme line-up, exceptional picture quality and super digital stereo sound and was more relevant to UK audiences. Astra was more choice orientated over quality on a medium power 52dBW geostationary European satellite using the inferior PAL standard which produced black and white sparklies in poor weather or if you used a 60cm dish north of Birmingham (Astra weakens in strength the further north you went), and the Astra channels sounded hissy in mono and stereo unless your receiver was equipped with true Wegener PANDA 1 noise reduction which Amstrads and cheaper brands of Astra receiver didn't use.

Great station and a great service by BSB, sadly we only had it in our house from the august till the merger in the november.... High definition dmac picture quality, stereo sound it was ahead of it's time with quality programming to boot..... sadly the station was undermined from the start by rupert murdoch who set up sky on the offshore astra system and the British government who needed his support politically turned a blind eye.... The book 'dished' is excellent ..... the day after the merger and murdoch turning up at marco polo house in a platinum Mercedes says it all! Most of the BSB staff were fired shortly afterwards......

Quick explanation: In the UK there was something i like to nickname the SatWars, where BSB and Sky were competing to see whos satellite TV was better, BSB won this by using high quality audio and video instead of Skys lousy PAL system, soon in December of 1990, BSB and Sky merged to form BSkyB, Galaxy soon was rebranded to Sky One/Sky Channel
@doubledeckers3 жыл бұрын
It's true that BSB was superb quality. It was like having a direct link to the studio. The technical standards were imposed as part of the licence. There were then technical issues with the domestic "dishes" which caused delay and by all accounts BSB spent money lavishly. Murdoch went with the poorer existing Astra system and the UK government did nothing to protect BSB by stopping him broadcasting into the UK. I can recommend the book "Dished!" which is the history of BSB. It was a turning point in British television. Up until BSB, which was designed to be a satellite version of the BBC, the ethos had always been to deliver the best quality pictures. That then reversed and the mentality was that viewers would tolerate smoothed-out sub VHS definition with digital artifacts. Which is what some channels have offered since. It was a financial disaster for Granada which then had a second one with OnDigital. Many of us think that the day British Satellite Broadcasting closed was the beginning of the end of quality TV in the UK. Other significant things happened at around the same time, such as the BBC ceasing studio drama and closing Lime Grove Studios and the TV Theatre.

British Satellite Broadcasting. It was the government approved satellite service. Exceptionally high-quality with an uncompressed RGB picture and five channels. However Rupert Murdoch was able to launch his unapproved crappy Sky service a little earlier with much poorer quality and eventually he took over BSB. To be fair BSB wasted money and there were delays with the technology. Some people think this was a turning point when quality died on British television in terms of content and picture quality. A book called "Dished" tells the story.
@davidm23644 жыл бұрын
@@doubledeckers Uncompressed RGB isn't accurate. It was a Y/C separated system that still had much lower chroma bandwidth. Better than Composite video, but nowhere near uncompressed RGB. (The set-top box could decode the signal and output it as analog RGB over SCART, though). Agreed, Dished is a great read.
